Subzero Calling It Quits After 20 Years Together
New York hardcore band Subzero has called it quits after roughly twenty years together. Frontman Lou Di Bella had the following to say:
"After a long 20 year run of smashing stages with Subzero we've decided to lay the band to rest. We had a fuckin blast and live with no regrets. Just wanted to say thank you to all the diehards who stood by us from the very beginning and to all the new supporters we've picked up along the way. All the good words of encouragement, showing up at our shows, reppin' our gear and crankin our music! It's a big part of what kept us alive for this long and we thank you for that. All the best to you guys and thank you once again! It's been real. Much respect.
"We will be playing a few more shows through out different regions of NY and out of state before we end it. Our first is at Popeyes Pub in Westchester, NY with Jasta on February 27th and then in Brooklyn at Europa with The Casualties and The Krays for the A Clockwork Orange Fest. That's the last time you'll be hearing The Suffering Of Man/Necropolis set. Then we'll be going out with a bang at the Superbowl of Hardcore aka Black N Blue Blowl at Studio B in Brooklyn on May 30th. There we will be reforming as the original band doing a strictly old school set. All the demo and Happiness Without Peace classics. You don't want to miss any of these shows! Thanks for the good times and the memories! COURAGE! STRENGTH! PRIDE! LIONHEARTED!"
A more extensive farewell from Di Bella can be found here

For all those kids that posted comments about Mortal Kombat within the age range of 14 to 21 you have no idea. Subzero was before Mortal Kombat. Subzero 1989 - Kombat 1992. Subzero helped pave the way for kids like you to practice playing music in their parents basements. Check out there band below. The first one is from 1990

pam - u have no idea what you are talking about. You are probably 16 years old and still live with your parents in Beverly Hills. U don't even know what hardcore is and where it came from. I guess u are one of those people who surfs myspace all day looking for "metal Bands" then calling yourself their biggest fan!!! I feel bad for trendy haters like u who have done nothing with your life!!!!

BlackMetalGoddess post 13 - not to be a d***, but what the hell are you talking about? Old school harcdore is the sh**! I can only conclude that you must be a teenager and think that bands like Bleeding Through are hardcore. Do some digging and find out what the real sh** is all about! You may be surprised.....

Sick of It All was the first REAL NY hardcore band I heard. They are very impressive. Life on the Ropes was a great disc. I also listen to Pro-Pain. The last album was crushing.... and I also like Sworn Enemy...who were obviously inspired by NYHC. By the way the MORTAL KOMBAT references - made me laugh out loud..funny shxt!

You know what i do like some Hardcore Punk, but not the more metallic sounding bands, with the exception of Cro- Mags. The older bands from the late 70's and mid to early 80's captured the sound which i tend to enjoy more. And growing up in NY city in the late 70' and early 80's was no cake walk. Most of the members of Cro Mags, Agnostic Front and Warzone were on there own from the age of 15, droping acid and hangin around Central Park. Remember the 80's werent all that great with Ronald Reagen running the country with his reagenomics.

Let me school all of you. Bad Brains was one of the first Hardcore bands if not the first to ever originalize the hardcore genre. If u don't know who they are then then u really are 13. Following them came Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Gorilla Biscuits, Lee Way, Warzone, Judge. Learn some respect for these bans that paved the way for gay a$$ bands like slipknot that u all listen to. Paint your face and dance around like you are apart of something. Subzero's song "boxed in" is one of the best songs ever written. listen to it on there myspace/subzeronyc song "boxed in" and listen to the words. Tell me thats not good.

Nah, been quite a while. Had quite a few bands since then, but nothing that panned out beyond paid weekend gigs. Always had fun though, no matter what we played. Hoping to get another band going later in the year if I can manage a move to Illinois. Not sure I'll ever really do well outside of local clubs though. Im not much for compromise :)
Just was letting you know some of us locals on this site have been around the block. Kinda what makes it such a cool metal site. Old guard and new blood all talking metal and heavy music. It's cool to talk NYHC on one thread and Death Metal or Black Metal on another. As well as Classic and Hard rock. Pretty good community, some bad eggs, but they usually don't last.

Hey Blind Greed - I sent you a message on gayspace....I am under the handle - Whirlwind...
I heard a little bit of your music, and plan on hearing more tonight...good stuff! and to that other dude - I am not 13 - therefore - I have heard of Bad Brains..Agnostic Front, etc. Lots of band have paid tribute to Bad Brains because they are so damn good at what they do.
31. writes:
Wow, you guys are WAY WRONG about my age and where I live. Just goes to show you how well you know various types of people. Yeah, I do know about NYHC and "subgenres" of hardcore and let's just say, it's all the same bullsh** *breakdown*, *breakdown*, *breakdown* over and over again. Same tempo, same vocals, different lyrics, same soup ~ just reheated. It's all opinion anyway. If you don't like it, write a song about it, get preachy on us, throw in a butt load of breakdowns and you've got an Agnostic Front song. BINGO!
32. writes:
You that breakdown and chugga chugga stuff, is popular but not all Hardcore Punk is like that. That encompasses allot of other genres too like Metalcore, Deathcore as well. Just try listening to some underground or lesser known bands and your perception will change.
33. writes:
BlackMetalGoddess- That is cool you came back. It appears you hate hardcore of all kinds. I won't lose any sleep over that, for that is your opinion. But I am not alone here when I say I enjoy old school hardcore.
I live in Orange County, so I was introduced to local LA/OC hardcore at a very young age so basically all the hardcore I like is from here (plus some east coast bands like the Misfits, Agnostic Front, Bad Brains).
I must have missed the chugga*chugga breakdowns and whiny lyrics of bands like TSOL, Fear, DRI, Circle Jerks, the Vandals, etc
Also, if you love black metal so much remember that the Misfits released two albums, Earth AD and Wolfsblood, that had a massive impact on the black metal scene.
All and all, music opinion is subjective. Alot of people think that all Black Metal sounds the same too, you know, but I am sure to you it does not.

38. writes:
Yeah dude - I found your band's site - I had no idea that your had your own page. Although, I think you said it is listed on your profile, right? I personally think black metal is crappy, but, once again, everyone has their opinions on various types of musik. I used to be heavy into industrial metal, but now I like stoner metal, and just straight up death metal. It is all cool because metal needs real fans, who are actually knowlegable about the roots of metal, like metal underground FANS...
40. writes:
Sure, could say the same about Blackmetal musically, never said it doesn't have that fault. Preference for blackmetal reigns over hardcore because of style, sound, image, history, ideology, i just think it's better than hardcore, all kinds, it's just an opinion. Didn't say anyone should changel their mind. I'm already familiar that blackmetal is tied into the heirarchy of metal with roots stemming from punk, classic metal, and some hint of hardcore but so is Thrash, Death metal, it's all related in some way. It's not rocket science. Just because it is so, doesn't mean i have to like hardcore, or even punk. I can't stand punk, hate it. Original hardcore is a blend of punk and metal. Hardcore has a die hard following yet I hate the values it represent. Blackmetal does the same but they are just the opposite. Religion being the main topic of choice. I could go on forever about this subject and more than likely will continue.....

BMG: That's what makes you who you are lady. It's your opinion and I respect that. As Netro once said: "I like anchovies on pizza, but most people don't. I won't waste my time trying to convince anyone how delicious anchovies are on pizza because they probably don't like anchovies for their own reasons, much the same way I have my reasons for liking them." Damn... That dude is prophetic.

Very well stated - Blake Metal Goddess. Yeah, I have said it once before, but there are just certain things about black metal that I don't like - for instance - the style of singing/screaming, but then again, I don't like extreme grunting vocals either..with exception to Amon Amarth and maybe Six Feet Under. Again, my opinion is as important as yours or others. Yes we are all metal fans, but like different types of metal, genres, whatever you call it. It is sometimes as simple as, if I like the music, I will go out buy and their cd or see them at a show. I am open-minded, most of the time, about my metal..

43. writes:
Black Metal Goddess- That is all good. You will find that essentially all of the regulars here respect each other's difference in music while at the same time celebrating the thing that unites us- our love of metal. For better or for worse we usually agree, or can agree to disagree, on most subjects because most members are cool like that.
BlindGreed- Without a doubt I am going to break out some old cassette tapes when I get home and listen to some DRI. I am thinking the album "Crossover". 90% of my old school hardcore is on cassette tape, haha.

Dude its a f***ing joke, relax. Im 25 so you dont need to school me on Hardcore Punk, i was born in NY. And you know what i cant stand these tough guy bands, they just seem to recycle the same sh** over and over again. Especially in NY, Hardcore has just lost its punk sound and gone Metal. Im in Los Angeles now, and its the same sh**. Hardcore Punk bands now just sound like Recycled Maddball and Hatebreed tough guy sh**.

I rather hardcore values over what I know about black metal values. Respect and hardcore scene family stuff over black metal's intolerance of anything religious.
Don't get me wrong I have nothing wrong with black metal. Just seems far too image driven. Sure lots of kids think that hardcore is about image but that is wrong. "Image doesn't mean a thing"
Gorilla Biscuits came with the Youth Crew movement. A bit after original hardcore. Hardcore's sound has evolved, doesn't matter if you want to admit it or not. Just like metal has.
I rather hardcore shows too, at least it is fun and no one stands there frowning.
58. writes:
"These blackmetal hands just can't hold the hand of a hardcore fan"
See that's my problem with black metal, the close minded mentallity. How can your movement expect to survive in the long run if you refuse to move with society.
I remember reading about some guy from a black metal band in Metal Hammer who stabbed a gay guy because of his sexuality. What's the difference between views like his and the established Christian attitudes towards gays?
59. writes:
If a muslim and an atheist both hated Christianity, do you think they would get along?
In theory, you guys(BMG and Wiggles), or rather, your preffered music, should coincide based on general values. Hardcore hates the system and how it f***s up people's lives. Black metal hates religion, which is itself a system, or a tleas a large facet of it, because it f***s up people's lives, specifically, theirs, in most cases.
BUT.
Hardcore is a scene that depends on not giving a f***. f*** the sytem, I'll do what I want.
Black metal is a scene that depends on giving too much of a f***. They insulted my ancestor's cultural heritage, let's burn a church using pages of the bible as kindling.
Generalizing, I know, but it sums it up decently, i believe, at least enough to put perspective on it.
Especially from a third-party(me) that doesnt neccesarily like either genre haha.
Now Playing: Gojira- Flying whales

If I could get away with it, i'd burn a f*cking church too to make an anti-religious statement BUT it's not going to solve the problem; only accelerate it making more Christians embrace themselves and to rebuild. Religion is nothing but a crutch; a scare tactic to control the masses. It's the extremist religious nut cases that bother me. Granted BM followers can also be extremist and I don't deny that. It maybe hypocritical but I would support them in the fight against Christianity or any repressive religion because alot of the Christians want a war and I'm willing to give it. Oh, and to that guy named "wiggles", not only would I not hold the hand of a harcore fan, i'd f*cking cut it off because don't you dare tell me that your hardcore homies are all positive! I've witnessed MANY negative pieces of crap, excuse me, hardcore fans, that are out to intentionally hurt the metal kids, especially in the pit. They talk alot of sh*t and need to have their butts rearranged. Yes, alot of BM fans are negative, but that exists in this world, we are merely the mirror held up to your face!

73. writes:
Gotta fight fire with fire I guess. I wouldn't really burn down a church but I do believe in SENDING A MESSAGE. It's just too bad that the supposed "listeners" have crucifixes stuck in their ears and do not listen. Listen to Kali, burning down churches doesn't solve anything. Lands your butt in jail and you have screwed your life. How dumb is that?

i like a few nyhc bands like citizens arrest, born against, murdock, SOIA, halfman, milhouse, celebrity murders, and rorschach.
and very few black metal bands: deathspell omega/keep of kalessin/abruptum.
on the whole i dont find many bands from either genere terribly interesting..........
im more rooted in the countrywide DIY hardcore of the 90's (groundwork, jihad, jesuit, honeywell, deadguy, kiss it goodbye, ice 9, unruh, gehenna, palatka, sleepytime trio, frodus, current, thoughts of ionesco, reversal of man, torches to rome. canadian bands like left for dead, acrid, one eyed god prophecy, drift, born dead icons, holocron) and quite a few of the old dischord bands like soulside, rites of spring, gray matter, fire party and circus lupus.
