Study Calls Metalheads Lazy Shut-Ins
In a recent report from the Edingburgh, Scotland based university Heriot-Watt, fans of hard rock and heavy metal suffer from “Low self-esteem, creative, not hard-working, not outgoing, gentle, at ease”. This was concluded after the university did a study regarding music types involving 36,000 people. You can read the other results at the BBC website.

Well, I just burned someone in another post for swearing . But what the FVCK. This is f***ing bullsh**. I have a job, play rugby, play guitar and manage my own investments. f*** I went to Leicester, Scotland, Dublin and Riegate to play rugby over spring break. Then they come out with this bullsh** saying that I can't do anything cause I'm depressed. f*** YOU Scotland.

At first, I was tempted to call bullsh** on this study, but then I researched the professor. Then after THAT, I realized I'm on the computer on a nice Friday evening trashing a man 8 timezones away.
Anyway here's the link to the Prof. site. http://www.le.ac.uk/psychology/acn5/acn.html
He seems to have quite and extensive track record.....

Wait, let me get this right - being creative, gentle, at ease and not stressed out from working too hard is suffering?? And all this time I thought I was living the dream!
8. writes:
These fukks are just trying to give us a bad reputation. They're the ones with low self-esteem and no creativity! Who the fukk goes around evaluating other peoples lives?...Seriously?...
These guys need to get the fukk outta here with that bullsh!t! No one buy into this nonsense! It's insanely absurd!

Since when is a mosh pit "gentle", and since, and how does one suffer from "creative" or being creative? And being a metalhead I DO volunteer time to the community now and then, I am lazy, true, but its funny how they don't show the poll of those lazy a$$ wanksters who only listen to whatever rap is on the radio who prefer to live off the welfare system as opposed to getting even a part time job to support their 3rd generation welfare spawn (AKA: Little $ocial $ecurity numbers fo my public assistance apps")
And the first person to say I am generalizing way to much, come to my city for a month and tell me I am wrong.
I mean, if ANYTHING, I would say we are overly aggressive or lacking any respect for authority. At least THOSE adjectives I could apply to about 70% of the metal heads I know... this is what happens when you let music companies call pop-rock/emo bands "hard rock" which is tossed into the "metal" genre for some reason now and then.

mmm, well, for me i'd say no to the first one, yes to the second one, yes to the third one, and yes to the rest.
but please, motherfvckers, don't generalize. that's something we call prejudice. 50 years ago they would have done something like this about different races, and they'd have been just as retarded.

prrff....that was the lamest f***in thing I've ever f***in heard..How can you have a low self esteem and be at ease, you dumbass piece of sh**!! I bet this wasnt even a research...just another goddamn stereotypical generalisation. Metalheads are usually hyperactive, arrogant, non-conforming and independant. And we have a kickass sense of humour as well.

Well obviously this doesn't refer to all rock/metal listeners.
I am creative, gentle, not outgoing, and at ease. But I'm an extremely hard worker, and I don't think I have low self-esteem either.
It almost aced me.
I bet these personality attributes are just for the stereotypes- who people think of when they think of a metalhead (suicidal).
27. writes:
"Low self-esteem, creative, not hard-working, not outgoing, gentle, at ease"
Wow...Everything is right about myself except for the 'not hard-working' part. Working in Security (though easy for the most part) does involve hard work, which I do a lot of.
Though one can say most of that about myself, the reasoning behind the way I am doesn't come from the music, it comes from the life I live anyway.
1)Low self-esteem: I was a kid being bullied and teased...That's a key factor.
2)Creative: Well, I'm in a band. I'm self-taught, and I write (lyrics mostly), and I draw sketches (I'm really good at realism).
3)Not outgoing: Dealing with fake people and backstabbers, and then having sh** girlfriends (Save two. Yeah, only two of my girlfriends are genuinely good people), of course I'm wary as to who to befriend and trust. So of course I'm not as outgoing as some Abercrombie-wearing a$$hole. But I still was popular in high school for some reason. And I do have great friends, I only want a small handful of friends who I can trust with my life, rather than a whole class of tards.
4)Gentle and at ease: Thats actually dead-on. I mean, I don't smile (almost EVER, except with friends), so dumbasses were always thinking I was angry and the next Columbine. But for the most part after said dumbasses got to know me better, they realized I wasn't some nutjob, and realized I'm actually pretty decent, and some girls realized I was actually nice. Those two girlfriends I hold in high regard both used to call me their 'teddy bear'-HATE IT!-. Actually, by an odd coincidence, they both thought 'teddy bear' was fitting (I f***ING HATE IT THOUGH!). Actually, even some of the sluts that tried to be my girlfriends called me that once in awhile (And I really hated that! I'm using you for sex, you know that, and you gave me a petname? Just shut up, enjoy my d*** and let me nut and go home! I'm not your man!)
In conclusion, The study is only meant to show what the majority of metalheads are like, it doesn't say that Metal *makes someone this way*. So I'm not sweating it. Besides, everyone knows that the majority of serial killers listened to classical and/or jazz music, think about it...

I love it when stupid people do stupid f***ing surveys. The amount of times i've been told s**t by some random about metal and about what metal heads are like... not knowing i'm f***ing one of them - and having the opportunity to completely shut them down is fantastic. This kind of bulls**t survey is the fuel for my fire.

29. writes:
I basically am all of those exept for the low self esteem part...I ACTUALLY have friends...and the amount of people that they survayed is NOTHING! That is basically the population of a city, and they didn't just interview metalheads. They interviewed people from all kinds of music. Did you realize that the only group of people with 'low self esteem' was the metalheads?
31. writes:
f*** this sh**! This survey is b.s. I work full time, pay rent, bills, and I go to school and find time to hang out with my friends. While I am lazy at times it's only natural when you have a busy shedule and then have free times on your hands. They should do a survey on people who listen to rap and hip hop. Cause last time I checked alot of people who are fans of hip hop, are kinda like this. f*** this survey.

36. writes:
Post 32,
You're an idiot. It wasn't a sob story, it was a self-analysis. For the most part, I've overcome my issues and I'm working to achieve something better from life, while you sit on a computer at home with mom and dad after a hard day in middle school to tell me something like you've lived a life worth acting like that. Let me tell you something, I've gotten into actual fistfights with my dad and won. I've had to fight him to keep him from hurting my mom and my little sister. I've almost died before (3 times: Once in a hospital, once in a car, and once with a gun to my face), I've lost close friends (one of them was raped and killed when I was 15, another died in the Virginia Tech shooting), and this past April I lost my cousin (he was gunned down at a gas station). The fact that I'm actually doing ANYTHING with my life (Navy and hopefully a future in a Metal band) and not picking up the f***ing bottle or a gun is miraculous. Don't ever come here to talk to people you don't know from Adam, and downtalk like we all hate our parents and cut ourselves, you just made the exact same kind of generalization that you probably came to this thread to complain about in this article. Nice job f***tard.
Also, with a name like 'KornDogg', I can tell you listen to Nu-Metal, which by the way isn't relevant in a Metal forum (I don't care if deathbringer posts articles about them, Korn is not metal). Grow up, and then grow a pair.

37. writes:
Grow up? Mother f***er im probably older than you! First off, metal is metal dipsh**. Nu metal, old metal, death metal or thrash metal.........its all still metal. Second, we all have problems, family, and friends die, everyone gets made fun of in school, And i have been shot (in the leg with a 22 rifle)! So dont come on here with another sob story or "self analyis" Third, you have the nerve to bring up my post name, with a name like "christf***er"! You got some nerve, fa**ot a$$ atheist. Being an atheist, i bet your gonna make great music in that little band of yours! Im a f***ing lineman stupid, work for a utility company. Thats a real job!!! Whens the last time you have climbed a 300 foot cell phone tower?
And finally, i hope you really are bettering yourself after all you went through! My point is, i just dont wanna hear about!

I TOTALLY AGREE with Christf***er's CONCEPT (there's always someone who misses that) :)
Anyways :The reason why anyone is the way they are is because of the events in their lives + their personality. Now here's some facts as we all know : the number of people tested was nothing, the study applies to stereotype people "in general", and all people are different, thus one "study" doesn't make anything a solid fact. If anyone certainly is any (if not all) of the things listed, it's because it's just the way they are. Fans of hard rock/metal can be some of those things, or none of those things JUST LIKE EVERY BODY ELSE. It's called "humans are different", duh.
Remember that study about metal fans being "depressed and most likely to commit suicide"? Well it's the exact same $#!+ ! I can't emphasize on this enough, the only reason any one is the way they are is because of their own life and their own personality. Period.
P.S I wonder if they even really used actual "metal or hard rock" in this study...who know what they use...

Worst pain ever, for me? When I was 13 I fell out of a bunk and split the bridge of my nose open. When I was in getting stitches my mum had a fit and the pain killer they were using on me stopped working. So I was just lying on a bed, with my nose half stitched up and bleeding everywhere while the doctor was helping my mum. They put the rest of the stitches in without even numbing it again! That sucked so much. Lol when I got them out so much dry blood came out of my nose, it was sick.

I just have to put in my 2 cents...Bullsh**! Heavy metal fans are some of the most creative, coolest, most understanding, and non-judgmental group of people that I have ever met. Most metal fans know about being called a freak because of the musik they love, and therefore, are more open-minded, and compassionate towards humanity because we have all sufferered from being criticized by others, due to our love of metal or rock. Once, again, that study is bullsh**!

post 73... LOL!!
People kill people, certainly, but it was a LOT more difficult before guns were invented. And (many) guns are invented for the SOLE purpose of killing people. You can't tell me the Uzi was made for fox hunting. Besides, guns take all the manliness out of killing. Back in the days of swords - or f***, even clubs! - you had to be a mad c*** or a sly b**** to kill someone. Now any old unstable, half-decrepit, brain-dead moron can squeeze a trigger and take out a school of people. People kill people WITH GUNS. If you're gonna kill someone, have some honour and dignity and challenge them to a duel, with no guns allowed.

Or, psythe, give each dueler one of those one-shot pea shooter Derringer's from the 1800s. Talk about OLD SCHOOL! lol.
DeathInEye, my notions tend to be circular, because the universe is a cycle of lives and deaths. The human race will stop before that cycle does (if the cycle ever stops at all). And I'm not an exception, I accept death fine and would never exclude myself because I accept that I'm as human as the next and am therefore just as prone to die as the one next to me. However, it would be nice to live just long enough to see how others die for a bit before I bit my own bullet. I'd love to know that even for a second, I outlived my enemies and antagonists. Long and short of it, I'm just as willing, if not more willing, to die just as well.
84. writes:
f*** all these arrogant, up tight peice of sh** f***ing "scholars" who have nothing better to do but hate on our music because they are to affraid to accept it for being one of the greatest forms of creativity and expression in the world today. What pisses me off more is that this study came from Scotland and I've always taken pride in being of Scotish descent. Im so f***ing p***ed right now that this is the first news i read after being abscent from this site for a few months. f*** you you f***ing art abolishing zombies. 86. writes:
Guns were mad for the exact purpose of killing. No doubt about it. I'm sure putting a gun to someone's head and pulling the trigger would take just as much guts to do as would hitting or stabbing. Guns keep the user (mostly) safe and the target destroyed. You can't tell me that shooting someone would be easy.

91. writes:
I could swore that Korndogg was banned awhile ago. Maybe he just hasn't been on in a long time.
I guess I should throw in my two cents, I doubt that they even studied metalheads in this study. Do you really think that they would get 36,000 metalheads to do this? I doubt it. And since they most likely don't know anything metal, how do they even know they're getting the real thing and not a kid that likes My Chemical Romance? These studies are completely pointless and people can't be generalized because everyone is different. Being creative is a great thing and if they think that it's not, they need a reality check.
92. writes:
See I'm much more linear in my thinking Christfvcker. Nothing has really given me reason to think otherwise. Actually, I'd be more inclined to see existenced (I guess) as a series of waves. Organisms rise, organisms fall. It's kool you accept you'll die. I accept it too. Hence my name. But with that said, I think we should try to live like death is horrible. I mean I don't know what the afterlife holds, and frankly, I'm not keen on figuring it out.

Dark_Funeral, I agree 100%. I used to see people, and be friends with people, that had those huge retarded looking pants and just felt like they were alienating themselves from other "crowds." The kids that had those huge pants on and all the chains hanging everwhere were only friends with the kids that looked like them. I never wanted to be like that.
The thing that I find funny now though is that a lot of the "emo kids" have been wearing either that sh** or girl pants. It's very strange when I was used to people wearing metal shirts years back.

I feel the need to post the fact that I am the complete opposite of this survey. Its honestly funny how many of us might not fit the "mold" of a typical metal head. I'm 25, work as a financial analyst, I am married and have been for two years, I have a house, I invest, I have no tattoo's or piercings and I can quote one of my co-workers boyfriends as the following "I want to punch him because he dresses so preppy". Yet, while I am at work, I am listening to metal. I am also getting my MBA, so how after that "brilliant study" could they find a select pool as they did? I realize that I do not fit the stereotype and rather enjoy the fact that I am not.
And to Dark Funeral and Stabbing... those tight pants are starting to really piss me off. If you were wearing tight pants wouldn't it make it extremely uncomfortable for your unit? And where the hell would you put it? The only thing I can think of is to "tuck" it, but that is just to weird to walk around with the tuck action going.

LMAO! Dark Funeral, I was thinking about something other than spit getting splattered onto her face. hahah And for the tight pants, I have no idea how people could do it. I need lose pants or I feel extremely uncomfortable. I just don't get how people could do it.
As for me and this study. I'm a college student studying Music Business Management and will be graduating with my bachelors degree in the spring. I just started working merch and touring in between my classes. I'm very outgoing and I love to meet new people. I do not have low self esteem but I am creative, I've been playing guitar for 9 years and have been in two bands. I've managed an artist and did that during all of my free time for FREE. I have no tattoos or piercings. This study is very uneducated and shouldn't have been published.
