At first I liked Waking the Fallen. If they would have gone in a heavier direction, they would have been possibly a good band to listen to. When City of Evil came out I really changed what I thought. They had gone with a more punk-ish sound and that wasn't what I was looking for. I definitely can see why people don't like them.
These guys are becoming a lot like herpes. You think you get rid of them, and then a year later it comes back and it sucks even more than before. Here's to hoping the ointment with help remove these little "love blisters."

In response to Necropolis:
I disagree with the statement that City of Evil has "a more punk-ish sound." City of Evil is the most produced, clean sounding album they have put out to date, and I believe every song is over 5 minutes long(maybe longer); very un-punk. For better or worse, their first two albums, in my opinion, had a much stronger punk influence. The fact that you do not like them or the album does not make them "punk-ish."

I probably used the wrong term for my thoughts. You're right, the production is a ton better than it was for Waking the Fallen. And the song lengths are longer. I really did use the wrong term in punk, I should have said that the vibe was very different than a typical metal album would be. I thought that the vibe felt, in my opinion, sort of like newer more pop-punk would. So, thanks for the correction, I should have meant something different. I was not trying to knock punk.

I am actually a fan of City of Evil. I think the songs are great and their sound was really unique. I have to admit though, the first couple times I listened to the album I wasn't impressed, but it grew on me very quickly. I think people really short-change these guys, often simply for their image. As lame as it is, it has nothing to do with their music. They definitely aren't at the top of my list of favorites, but I am interested to hear what the new album has in store.

7. writes:
I get what you mean. There was a signficant change in style between the last two albums. Not just the absence of the screaming, but the riffs and the overall "vibe" is different. They are a hard rock-metal-pop act, so don't come looking for something they are not.
I didn't mean to sound so harsh haha. The last sentence on my previous post was a little sharper than I had intended.

I would disagree with you lastcaress. I would say that because they don't scream and they don't have the breakdowns or the same attack that they did before that they aren't as heavy as when they first started. Either way, if you are listening to A7X, you know that you aren't going to get the death growls.
I look at them and see their image like a Motley Crue style and their music is gradually progressing away from the OC metal trend that spawned a lot of the bands like them and Atreyu and everything after.
10. writes:
A7X are crippled by lousy vocals and bottom of the barrel lyrics.
The band have undeniable chops but they're so hellbent on honoring the ghost of GNR that it's as offputting as the singer.
Then theres the image...Holy nail polish, err uh..God.
Look at the picture above!....Trying to look past the image for substance is tough enough without everything else thats wrong with this band. The stage names make Mushroomhead, Otep and Slipknot's seem brilliant, no small feat.
Then lying to their fans about the transition to pure clean vocals, they likely lifted the very true thing that happend to Jonas Renke of Katatonia.
The only thing respectable about this band is that they themselves have a respect for their forebears.
Now Playing: Therion - "Uthark Runa"

i dont know if ripping off guns and roses songs and solos counts as chops, but they are a lot better musically then a lot of other bands in the genre (atreyu), thats not really saying much though. but the fact that they were makeup and have some whiney douchebag as a singer just ruins it. and the fact that they are pure cheese. i still think its funny that some a$$hole who wears girl pants and makeup can call dillinger a bunch of homos. im pretty positive that greg could beat the sh** out of this whole band by himself.

16. writes:
Okay, if some people dont like A&X, then dont comment, because its pointless, and doesnt change any of our views on the band. Saying "whiney douchebag" doesnt make the singer of A&X lest successful, or less talents, so while he is getting pootang, u can sit on ur chair, make fun of them, and suck your own d**k.

19. writes:
i think everyone is entitled to ur opinion but sum of ur guys comments r stupid ur talking about there nali polish and the pic above, ok dude thats like 5 years old they dont even look like that now, there tatted and thats it, people change and there getting older now and want to eplore differnt sounds like all legendary metal bands do, including METALLICA, sum fans hate the change but sum like it, that music, its expression,

21. writes:
a7x aint pop i should slap u there metal/punk, thats it and mor power too them they get to play warped tour and ozzfest, sumthing most bands cant do, if they have ozzys respect then there metal no one cares what u think, metallian, oh ya i beleive it was metalllica who asked a7x to play with them

23. writes:
I' dont really think that Ozzy really listens to all the bands that go to jis tour. Maybe in the beginning he did, back when Pantera was ripping Metal a new a$$hole, as opposed to these guys, who just fill that a$$hole. I'm guessing that the tour, like most, is decided by their record companies, or whoever tries to sign onto the damn Ozzfest bandwagon.
And to A7X FOR LIFE: being tatted up does not make them any cooler. In fact, a transition so drastic as from that picture to the huge extent of tattoos and black leather that they sport now, just screams "poser". Never listened to this band's older stuff, but that city of evil cd was an album of songs i coulda done without. The only good it's done is that now I have a warning that steers me free of posing queer Metal kids that listen to "Bat Country" in the middle of the f***ing road out of a godamned boombox. Whenever i hear that song, I know that someone needs the sh** kicked out of them, or should simply be avoided in case you catch the contagious "fagness". The band is a poser band, and like Slipknot, virtually all of it's current diehard fans are likewise in need of a good talking-to. Or a beating.

24. writes:
Ah and now I will pick apart all the stupid things people have said so far
#1) "a7x for life" "eplore differnt sounds like all legendary metal bands do, including METALLICA" First I would like to congratulate you on your use of spelling. One a couple of spelling bees in your day I see, but to the matter at hand. Why you would even put A7X in the same category with Metallica is beyond me, but to call them "legends" thats something worth laughing at. There a trend band sort of like a bad stain on a shirt, just need to "shout it out".
#2) "a7xfan" "mshawdows can scream better then any of u douche bags fav singers, he chooses to sing be cause he posesses the skill" Ah but of course he can scream better, haha just kidding. Angela Gossow has a manlier scream and is more manlier in general compared to this guy. Hell even Randy Blythe makes this guys screams sound pathetic.
#3) Gunslinger"so while he is getting pootang, u can sit on ur chair, make fun of them, and suck your own d**k." He can have all the "pootang" he wants (have you seen his fans, not the prettiest bunch of people) and hell if you can suck your own d*** that is a skill worth being commended for, although I don't know if you would want to brag about it.
Ah the generic "f*** you" posts will never stop, and that just makes the metal underground that much better and every forum always an adventure.

26. writes:
a7xfan "he chooses to sing be cause he posesses the skill". - Might have been the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. With all honesty, he doesn't "posess" the skill, that's why we are all hear to rag on him because he sounds terrible, and we wish that he would go back to screaming worse than Angela.
He blew out vocal chords so he chooses not to scream, but in that same sentence "he blew out vocal chords", therefore he shouldn't sing either.
And honestly, I couldn't care less if he was getting pootang from all of his fans. Just means that he's gonna have some love blisters on his face, and a rash. No thanks to that.
Also, yes they are "tatted" now but both of their guitarists still wear make-up, and have of them look like they want to be hair-dressers.
And I do own their cd's, not proud of it, but I do.

I gotta agree with Acid Rain, when it comes to Metallica, A7X just doesn't compete.
Though they are one of my favorite bands, and the first one that got me into the punk/metal/rock scene, so this band has meaning for me.
But I'll admit that the first two albums weren't that great.
And no f***ing way are they "emo".
I don't believe in emo.
I'll settle for calling them metal or punk.
It comes down to what song we're talking about.
And I'm confused as all f*** as to why people comment on this board to sh** all over A7X...even though I love the intelligent musical argument.
29. writes:
Why? Because this is a site that posts mainly metal news, hence most of it's visitors come here as fans of Morbid Angel, Metallica, Emperor, At The Gates, Iced Earth, Black Sabbath (you know, metal bands) and see A7X as an affront to what they come here for. Because they're not a metal band. They're (insert non metal thing here I don't care about here).
Now Playing: Twisted Into Form - "The Flutter Kings"

EMO??? haha thats why they have sleveless shirts and they have songs about kicking someones ass...there metal dude get over it"
Man, I think I was sick in my mouth just a bit. The day that makes a band metal I'll happily spring board from the nearest tall building.

Besides being an online Metal ritual, it really gets the creative juices flowing when you're looking for good metaphors.
and also because we get the same thing on other "metal" threads.
Some A7X or Korn fan leaps over the Mason/Dixon and has the audacity to boast about their screamo/nu-metal/metal-core being heaven-sent while trashing an honest to god metal act.
It's preemptive war "the Bush way" which is great when it only costs a little time and someone's feelings instead of lives and money.
Some of the best discussions I've had on these threads have been with bright people who I violently disagree with but who make respectable cases for their views.
Now Playing: Soundgarden - "Pretty Noose"

a7x are metal. and thats the bottom line. just because they dont scream their guts out over 2 or 3 power chords doesnt make them any less metal. and music genres are diffrent to each person. just because you disagree with how a band is "labeled" doesnt mean you are right. who gets to decide if a band is metal enough any way.......?

43. writes:
i wish people would stop saying that these guys are not metal when the definition of metal is a completely intangible and subjective to opinion. I mean say that they're not if you want but all of this violent reaction is completely unjustified. Their music is technical and complex. while I agree they struggle with vocals and lyrics they have two talented guitarists and a hellacious drummer. f*** image.

49. writes:
avenged sevenfold remind me of the 80s when metal was a joke and every dumb airhead b**** loved poison and had huge loads of hairspray in there hair. if they were a joke band and didnt take themselves seriously and hammed it up a little, i wouldnt mind them as much, but the fact they take themselves seriously is angering. especially with that whiny voice, every time i hear bat country i think of a fat kid crying for cake.

51. writes:
The problem with A7X is that they are actually talented musicians [mostly], but they can't seem to get a sound at all. If they could actually put out some decent lyrics, and find a sound that works for their talents, they would be great.
Not to be mistaken, I do like them.
I'm just saying, that's what it seems like to me.

52. writes:
Well to all the A7X haterz out there, Burn in Hell. Yes comparing them to metallica makes me sick. Meteallica is nothing but a bunch of whinney old sell out farts who has not had a hgood album since and justice for all. A7X great lyrics heavy beat. an can thrash it out with the best.M. Shadows The Rev an the rest of the gang seem like a great bunch of guyz who put together a band and are living out there dreamz while the rest of you sit here an B*#ch about it cause your a bunch on jealous punx

56. writes:
viciousmistress wrote that they need to find a sound that fits them with in my mind would kinda suck b/c then your stuck listening to the same sound each track i love it when bands switch up sound just look at korn they have switched up there sound plenty of times and are still a kick a$$ band

57. writes:
sorry for another one but its late and im bored so anyway people say these guys are metal and others say they are not metal but how do you actually know if a band is metal i mean with all the types out there is there really only one catagory of metal lets look at wat i got here
grindcore
metalcore
thrash
trash
death
heavy
hair
there are others but i dont really feel like listing them but you get my point
there is a wide variaty of metal and to say that a7x dosnt fit in any of them is like saying apples dont come from trees so in my opinion these guys are metal in a way
58. writes:
There are bands that are metal and bands that have metal influence. Just because they don't fit into a subgenre (a band like say, Oxiplegatz might not either) doesn't mean that metals borders are not well defined. What I'm trying to say is see metal more as a circle with various subgenres contained within. A7X are not within this circle.
Now of course what is and what isn't metal is purely subjective, I can think a monkey hitting a rock on a stick is metal if I want. However what we do have as a testing stick is the metal community, which as you can see from the example of the MU community rejects them. One of the largest and most respected online metal communities is the Metal Archives, which no surpise has rejected them.
Now Playing: Opeth - "Wreath"

59. writes:
DeadNight, I'm not saying that every track should sound the same. The difference between them switching sound and Korn switching sound, is that while Korn did that, EVERY SOUND THEY USED WAS GOOD AND WORKED FOR THEIR BAND.
That's what A7X needs to find, sounds that the can play and work with what they have, if they can do that I think they'll surprise everyone.
