Report: 35% Of Heavy Metal Songs Have Satanist Content, Says Expert
Interfax has issued the following report:
Most heavy metal songs are about murder and suicide, the Serbsky State Research Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry professor Fyodor Kondratyev opines.
"Having researched 700 most popular heavy metal songs revealed that half of them is about murder, 7 percent is positive about suicide, and 35 percent preaches a variety of Satanist ideologies", Kondratyev said in his interview published in Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily on Monday.
He shared with the journalists that according to the American National Education Association every year near 6,000 young Americans kill themselves under the influence of music like that.
According to the expert, Satanism is popular among the teenagers from problematic families, who aim at "taking vengeance on the society" and "look for the similarly-minded teens - so their stress mollifies and they start thinking they are better that the normal children".
The professor said that according to the information he got during a forensic psychiatric examination of a criminal, in Moscow there were five strong Satanist groups with 1,000 members, while in Russia there over 100 groups like that.
The same criminal said that during the previous five years the Satanists had committed over 20 ritual murders, Kondratyev said.
However, he added, in today’s Russia it is hardly possible to put somebody into jail for on a ritual homicide accusation.
‘Good defenders and threatening of witnesses may destroy any process. I know it from my years of experience as legal expert,’ he added.

this proves absolutely nothing. show me the list of songs this "expert" has so diligently "researched". i can almost guaruntee that the majority, if not all, of those songs were misinterpereted if they are indeed the "most popular" metal songs. i think this guy hunted for questionable lyrics and either found them and blew them out of context or created them.
no one knows why the 6000 young americans really killed themselves except those young americans. this nutjob has a lot of gall to judge those 6000 suicides.
his definition of satanism seems to be "the behavior disorder kids at middle school along with those who question authority or people who just aren't happy". let me tell you, im not a satanist and i DIDNT come from a problematic family and im not about to conform and live my life by society's standards.
what the hell is "normal" anyway? everyone is different. therefor, it is normal to be different. thus being different is normal and, consequently, normality can only be achieved through differences.
i hope this guy gets hit by a bus. what an ignorant jackoff.

Besides all that, no one, and I mean no one listens to metal to feel depressed or suicidal. Depresed and lonley kids listen to metal so they don't feel alone. I can't count how many times metal has been there for me to help me back up when life has knocked me down.

Satanism is more a way of life than a religion. You dont have to agree with it, but every ignorant person that looks at metal and thinks that the lyrical content is all kill this, kill that, 666, they are foolish and blind. The bands have a right to believe what they want.

lol I think a number like 68% of people know that statistics can be made up by anyone. No in all seriousness. I will agree that some bands do put out violent lyrics BUT lyrics don't kill people. Its like the same thing when numerous American senators blamed violence in teens on videogames. People seem to need to blame the things that their children are exposed to before actually takin the time to consider that maybe the kid was just screwed up to begin with or poor parenting. Music is a form of expression an art if you will. it doesn't kill people. People kill people.

Bah, what a load of crap. Considering his sample size was 700 of the "most popular metal songs" I wouldn't worry too much about this saying anything at all about metal in general. Metal is a vast genre of music and most of the good metal isn't popular at all by most standards. Lyrics are easily wildly misinterpreted or taken out of context, and besides, half of the time you can't tell what words are being sang anyway, so what difference does it make? LOL, I love these studies, they are entertaining.

OK, so this guy did a "little" research by listening to 700 songs, but where's his credibility with the claim of 6000 suicide deaths under the influence of metal music? Listen, I truly am a coroner, and I'm around death daily. My office handles suicides constantly. The real reason why people take their life? None of us truly know, other than the person who did it. And guess what, they are not here to tell us. There are many factors that can contribute to somebody committing suicide, but the accusation of 6000 deaths of those "under the influence of music like that" is ridiculous, plain and simple. No one truly knows what the defining reason a person commits suicide, and what pushes them to this extreme. I'm sick of music being used as an excuse for some type of justification. There are far more underlying factors, and music is not one of them.

Expert my ass! an expert would know the difference between heavy metal and other genres of music... if we were talking about death metal or black metal, ya i could understand that many of the lyrics might be satanic and/or about drugs, suicide, violence etc. if we are talking about regular mainstream heavy metal however, i can only think of a hand ful of songs (out of the thousands in my music library) that deal with these themes. As a frontman in a "true" heavy metal band i am offended by being made into a scapegoat for violence and social problems just cuz i can sing more than 3 octaves and have better musical apreciation than a toothpick.. oh wait.. i said scape"goat"... sorry mr expert but does the goat reference make me a satanist?
