Matt Heafy Talks Of Their Domestic Success

Band Photo: Trivium (?)
Having just wrapped up their North American headlining tour, Trivium frontman Matt Heafy checked in with his thoughts on the matter:
"Finally home in Chicago for a little break before we head to Finland this Friday. We have just a little time off before we get back at it.
"Well, I gotta say man, at first we were very nervous about doing our first headlining tour of North America, but holy SHIT was it incredible. We saw anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand motherfuckers rocking out a night. We woulda been happy with a few friends a night, but I guess lotsa people we're feelin like a TRIVIUM show was the right way to spend their nights and it showed and we thank for you for coming out and supporting The Crusade tour.
"The bands we brought out were so killer; great people, great music. We were really fortunate to have THE SWORD, PROTEST THE HERO, SEEMLESS, SANCTITY, and CELLADOR on our Crusade tour. We had a really good time and thanks a million to all the bands and crews for comin out and working so hard to make things click. You all really helped make our first U.S. headline run something special.
"As I said, we leave this Friday for Finland to join the mighty IRON MAIDEN on thier SOLD-OUT world tour for 'A Matter Of Life And Death'. We will hit Scandinavia, mainland Europe and the U.K. IRON MAIDEN are one of the world's best and most influential bands on the whole fucking planet and we know it will be a lot of fun and we are really looking forward to it.
"I'm pretty braindead and beat-up from our last three killer shows in Texas that closed the tour. What a way to end the tour (also from the early morning flight to Chicago), but I'm in great spirits cuz our Crusade tour rocked so hard and thank you all for making it possible. We in the TRIV... camp can't wait to see all you nutty motherfuckers on the next USA/Canada tour, so 'till then LEARN THE FUCKIN WORDS MOTHERFUCKERRRRRSSSS (lotsa ya already do)."

Overrated?....Definitely.
But as stated by finn, they got where they are by busting ass. They're clearly grateful and that says alot too. They have more skill than anyone still under the drinking age -should- have.
I'll admit, they're super accessible by metal terms, but I think every generation needs that. A band who brings the heavy but keep it open for people who might not be ready for Napalm Death.
If their singer could patch up those oft corny lyrics these guys would be set....

all the people that hate this band so much and think they going downhill just remember how many albums they sold, how many awards they won in the metal section and how many fans they have, this band is a band that have a lot of talent and just because they have chaged there style dont mean anything they still are one kick a$$ band and is making metal big, not every person wants metal to be flat out hardcore there is more to metal then that

They had some metalcore tendencies, The entire Ascendency album proves that.
I think the band should own up to it rather than deny their origins....They would not be doing as well as they are if that scene had not been growing along with them.....
They've clearly made a move to erradicate that aspect of their sound and it's probably the right time, with metalcore having such a negative stigma attatched to it.

I Would like to see someone from an EMO band, play any of triviums songs on Drums or Guitar, As far as the vocals go...It took a while to get used to, therefor i didn't go see them live this year, Im just hoping he still incorporates a little screaming in his live sets, and Trivium Gets my 100% vote of MOST AMAZING BAND...After all..Gotta get some aggression out at a metal concert!!

In response to Phill's comment near the beginning, by your logic, bands like MCR and many rappers would be very talented too because they received so much mainstream success. So No, just because many fans like the band and because it won many awards doesn't mean that the band is good. If you were a real metal fan, you would know there are much more talented bands like Nile, The Faceless, Anomalous, Necrophagist, and many more out there that haven't even been discovered. Trivium is yet another sell-out metalcore band that needs to more innovative, rather copying Metallica's voice, riffs, and style.

To blakscorpion21: Well as much as one can define a music using the english language, Wikipedia has a pretty good explaination of metalcore/post-thrash.
"a style influenced heavily by mid-tempo thrash riffs, accentuated with down-tuned power chords (drop D or D standard tuning), syncopated chord patterns, mid-paced guitar solos, and dissonant bridges or breakdowns.... Vocals usually consist of thrash metal styled shouts, hardcore styled barks, and clean singing. "
I think they could probably expand that to include the whole melodic death riffing which is also quite prevailent.
Breakdowns, a common facet in metalcore bands could be defined as "slowing a song down, giving the guitars room to play a set of rhythmically oriented riffs, usually on open strings so as to achieve the lowest sound for which the guitars are tuned. Breakdowns riffs are also typically played on the minor chord of the key. These riffs are often accented by the drummer through double bass drums and use of the china cymbal.... Vocalists also often throw in a single, repeated statement throughout the breakdown."
A good example is in the song Split about by Chimaira (a band I f***ing hate) at about 1:13.

Also on the subject of Trivium not being metalcore on a quick listen 0:45 seconds into "Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr" is a classic metalcore trick, one which I think is cheap and simple.
That said, I don't hold that much spite towards them and they have some real potential, I just dislike metalcore, and dislike cheesy melodic death metal riffs. Trivium seems a normal metal band with a combination of the two. And really sh** shout vocals (haven't heard the new album though... doubt they would have changed much musically.)

most over rated band ever......better than avenged sevenfold, but they've managed to turn themselves from talented young metal musicians into a really really good tribute band to 80's American thrash....they are trying way too hard in my humble opinion.
