Don't know about these other bands but I'm giddy for the new 'tones record.
The discussion of "how metal" or not the deftones are is moot. It's a complete array of styles.
Teething, Elite, Engine # 9, Damone and When Girls Telephone Boys are f***ing intense....By anyones definition of metal....
But the moody (Lifter, Bloody Cape) mellow (No Ordinary Love), spacey (Teenager, Digital Bath), and rock-style tracks (Bored, Dai the Flu, Drive) are all fun listens to!...Just differnt

Sorry Remember but this looks like another fagfest. Their first 2 cds were ok and believe or not
I actually saw them live with Monster Magnet here in Indy and then with Life Of Agony in Chicago.
It just seems they got a litlle bit to whineyish after Around The Fur. Well sh** I forgot I saw them at
Ozzfest in 99 and someone had to wake me up after their set.

Meh.
I can't change your mind Kmadd, Deftones just happen to be a band I like.....Ussually when I think whiney I think Limp Bizkit, later era Korn or the emo bands (thursday, my chem, coheed and cambria, dashboard confessional, promise ring....that horse sh**).
The first two records were the best for their punk/hardcore energy and metal nuances, but the next two records I found entertaining for the sheer fact that one song to the next sounded like a completely different band.
From interviews with the guitarist and drummer the band act like this one with be riff oriented (unlike the last album) and considerably heavier since Chino Moreno vents his more Smiths-like tendencies in his Teamsleep project.

Right on, RememberMetal, you couldnt have said it better. The Deftones are a unique band with a diverse sound that is ALWAYS changing, and never for the worse. They can melt your ears one moment and sooth you the next, they have a little something called "musical range" that has kept them as credible now as when they first came up all those years ago, and couple that with chino's abstract poetic lyrics, you only kinda know what he's hinting at, so you can relate the emotion so much more to situations in your own life instead of just being blatently told what to feel. Thats why they have some of the most hardcore fans out there, but probably why they will never truly reach mega stardom, since they often are a little too brainy and moody for the mainstream, but i love'em regardless. But they are a great, great cult band for sure, and i have seen them 9 times live throughout the country over the years, and its always worth it, especially if its a cramped, smokey club show... bring on the new stuff already!!
