Tenacious D Wins "Metal" Grammy Award

Surprise, surprise, the Grammy Awards continue to have no clue about metal (remember when Halestorm somehow won a metal Grammy?) with pathetic nominations that ignore 99% of the quality material out there from dozens of stellar labels and independent bands.

The Grammys don't actually have a category just for heavy metal albums or songs, but instead include a token "metal performance" category. Nominees in the "best metal performance" category included:

"Neon Knights" by Anthrax (Ronnie James Dio cover)
"High Road" by Mastodon
"Heartbreaker" by Motörhead
"The Negative One" by Slipknot
"The Last In Line" by Tenacious D (Ronnie James Dio Cover)

...and somehow Tenacious D won a metal award by covering Dio. Yeah, wrap your head around that.

If you hate music and want to join the circle jerk of uninspiring musicians with too much fame and money, feel free to find the full list of winners at this location.

For the run down on the real best metal performances (and albums, DVDs, and newcomers), check out our year-end awards over here.

LOL. When covers of original songs are winning Grammy Awards it's time to call it a night. Two nominees in one category? Your credibility isn't even an illusion.

What a farce.

Grammy's are about popularity and therefore it's more about the PR campaign than the musical quality. (Even Kanye knows this, which is why his 'outrage' is calculated to keep his name in the public sphere.)
The Metal performance category is only there to let us metalheads know that they know Metal exists.

The criteria for choosing the winners is diametrically opposite to the way we in the metal community value and rank our music. Their popularity method guarantees that the least metal nominee will win. Go to wiki and look for yourself. (Frankly, I'm surprised CoF was even nominated in 2005.)

I'd be willing to bet that the reason for two Dio covers within the nominees is due to the range of people that were involved in the project. The cumulative web hits for all the contributors to the tribute album increased the ranking in the 'judging' algorithm. Jack Black winning is simply because he's more well known.

A silver lining is that now more people are aware of RJD (maybe even a raised awareness of stomach cancers).

This actually does not bother me, because honestly I think the mainstream media likes to pretend metal is a dead genre half the time, so even inching anywhere close to the genre is like a small pat on the back.

The Grammy's have never known sh** about the genre. I prefer it that way though because the best music has always been underground! If only they knew how big the metal movement is, was and will always be.
