NecroWretch's Vlad Conjures Up "Putrid Death Sorcery"

Earlier this year French act NecroWretch served up some devastatingly sacrilegious, old school death metal with latest album "Putrid Death Sorcery." The brutal debut is out now through Century Media, and vocalist/guitarist Vlad wasn't shy in sharing what he wanted to do with these tracks.

"The album sounds like a massive hammer smashed your face, and in the slow parts, your resurrection as an undead creature," Vlad gleefly explains. Check out the full interview below for a rundown on just what constitutes "Putrid Death Sorcery."

xFiruath: NecroWretch has actually been around for a few years, but this will be the band’s first official full-length album release. Can you give me a brief history of how the band got together and what it’s done up until now?

Vlad: Greetings from the tomb! All the madness began in 2008 when I founded the band with the impure intention to play sadistic-gravecracking-possessed death metal! Blastphemator joined me to play the drums, and after three rehearsals, we entered a local studio to record the first demo “Rising From Purulence.” Later we played our first gig and Amphycion joined the band to play the bass. With this infernal trio, we recorded the second demo “Necrollections” and an EP “Putrefactive Infestation” in 2011. At this point, Blastphemator wasn’t motived at all to continue with us, so we recruited two drummers: Mörkk (for the studio) and Desecrator (for the shows). With this unholy alliance, Necrowretch puked out another EP “Now You’re In Hell” in 2012 and the first album “Putrid Death Sorcery” in 2013.

xFiruath: How would you describe the sound of the new album to someone who hadn’t heard it, and what distinguishes your music from any other act in the same genre?

Vlad: I think the title of the album “Putrid Death Sorcery” is a perfect way to describe what you’re gonna find while listening to this infamous ritual. Necrowretch plays putrid death metal, we’re influenced a lot by Death, Possessed, Repugnant, and Merciless musically, but also by some black metal acts such as Marduk, Dissection, or Bathory. The album sounds like a massive hammer smashed your face, and in the slow parts, your resurrection as an undead creature.

xFiruath: Where were these tracks recorded and what was the process like?

Vlad: We recorded the album in Blackoutmultimedia studios in Brussels with Phorgath from Enthroned as sound engineer. It was a hellish recording session! The studio was located in the basement, and we were really living in this basement for ten day - seeing the light of the sun only a few minutes per day, eating shitty food, and sleeping in the ground with our instruments. You can truly imagine that all of that madness put us into frantic conditions to play at the maximum speed with all of our guts throughout the album.

xFiruath: Do you guys have any videos coming out soon?

Vlad: Yes, we have a video clip for the title track coming pretty soon. It’s gonna be very satanic so stay tuned and prepare yourself for horrible doom!

xFiruath: Tell me about the artwork – who handled it and how does it connect to the album?

Vlad: Since 2010, all of the art, logos, shirts designs, flyers, etc. were done by the crazy infernal artist Milovan Novakovic from Montenegro. He’s really involved in the band, and he’s kind of a band member when it comes time to spew his infernal creations to symbolize our music. Each song on the album is related somehow in the artwork, and there is a kind of story line between the arts of the EP and the album.

xFiruath: Tell me about your local metal scene.

Vlad: I live in a shit hole and there is no metal scene here. I have to drive 2 hours by car to find a decent metal gig. I’ve never played a show in my hometown, and it will never happen.

xFiruath: Have you been to any killer live shows lately?

Vlad: Sure! Some killer gig such as Marduk, Aura Noir, Immolation, and Kreator.

xFiruath: Do you have any other musical projects going right now?

Vlad: No, my only goal is to play putrid death metal. But I’ll be happy to play in a heavy metal band someday…

xFiruath: What albums are you listening to lately and what are you looking forward to coming out this year?

Vlad: I’m listening to some killers acts such as Krypts, Perversifier, Ascended, and Entrapment. My hope this year goes to a new killer band from Belgium called Slaughter Messiah, check them if you want to die, the old way!

xFiruath: Anything else you’d like to mention?

Vlad: Thanks to all of the people who’ve supported us for the past five years. I hope “Putrid Death Sorcery” will crush your mind and turn you into a brainless zombie!
