Dani Filth Chats About Upcoming North American Tour Dates, New Album, And More

The Filth is about to hit the road again, gearing up to devastate North American audiences with The Faceless, Decapitated, and The Agonist later this month (check out a list of tour dates at this location).
The British metal icons will be touring in support of "The Manticore and Other Horrors" (reviewed here), released last year, although front man Dani Filth confirmed to us the set list will include many cuts off previous albums.
In a recent chat with Dani, he discussed the varied nature of this tour's lineup, the band's recent trend in releasing albums every two years, his long delayed side project Temple of the Black Moon, and what's happening in the realm of horror movies. Read on to find a full transcription of the interview.
xFiruath: Cradle of Filth is about to hit North America for an upcoming tour. Can you tell me about what’s happening with that run?
Dani: Your IRS and government are making it difficult for anyone to come over at the moment with the taxies they levy and the visas, we’re having a problem with that. It seems like our country just lets anybody in and America is very stringent about even letting people visit. But it’s all good, we’re getting there. We’ve got the tour, it’s a shorter tour but with fewer days off. We’ve got a hectic schedule coming up with South America and the Summer festivals as well. This tour has a great lineup with Decapitated, The Faceless, and The Agonist, so it’s pretty strong. We’re looking forward to it.
xFiruath: What’s your set list going to look like? Will it be mostly stuff from the new album?
Dani: No, it’s a real mixture of different things. It’s akin to the recent set list we did in Europe. It’s a varied set. I went to see Iron Maiden on the “Matter of Life and Death” tour and they did all of “A Matter of Life and Death” and just a couple of the best hits and it was like, ugh, I don’t want to be like that. It can be overwhelming. When people come to see the band they want to see more from across the eons so to speak.
xFiruath: It seems like the lineup is going to draw in very different crowds, because there’s tech death with The Faceless and then the symphonic black metal with you guys. Do you think that will affect the shows or the turnout?
Dani: I think America has always been kind of liberal in this sense, and what I mean by that is that in Europe people generally go out with the same sort of bands. We just did a European tour with God Seed and Rotting Christ and a band called Darkend, so it was all pretty similar in style. But in America before we’ve toured with bands like GWAR, Type O Negative, Moonspell, Sworn Enemy, Killswitch, and Shadows Fall. So you get different people like punks and straight edgers and it’s more varied. Another tour we did was Arch Enemy and Bleeding Through, which was another varied bunch. I think it’s going to work well to tell you the truth. It’s just different shades of the same overall music, and I don’t think people want to just see three bands that all sound the same.
xFiruath: The last time we got to do an interview “The Manticore and Other Horrors” hadn’t come out yet. Can you give me a rundown on the writing and recording process for that album?
Dani: It was quite relaxed, really. I don’t think people were expecting another album so soon, although we have been putting them out sort of every two years. We’ve got stuck in that motion of moving forward two years at a time, and when it came to that period when we should have started writing, we did, instead of taking more time out. The fire consumed us again. We went backwards and forwards from about Halloween 2011 to about March, around the time of “Midnight in the Labyrinth.” Ideas came pretty thick and fast, it was a creative time period. When it came to recording, we demoed everything extensively. So rather than me doing the vocals in the normal way after everything else was done, we decided to use two studios running simultaneously alongside each other. They’re only about ten miles apart here in England, but we rarely saw one another until the mix. But it meant we cut the time in half, since we were doing vocals and drums at the same time. It felt more relaxed because we weren’t up against a strict deadline. The music has some different things in it, it’s got some kind of New Wave of British Heavy Metal, it’s got a bit of a homage to traditional fare and hardcore, and things that people don’t usually associate with Cradle of Filth.
xFiruath: You mentioned releasing a new album every two years lately. Do you see that continuing with a new album in 2014?
Dani: I’m not too sure about that. I think we’re going to take it a little slower with this one and not follow a formula. We don’t want to become too formulaic. Bands that do that kind of sit on their heels, and I think we’re going to take longer to try to experiment with some other things. Of course we’ve got a whole bunch of touring coming up that’s going to keep us busy hopefully up until next Christmas.
xFiruath: On “The Manticore and Other Horrors” you have the ending track that’s entirely symphonic, and then you did the all orchestral “Midnight in the Labyrinth” album. Will there be more material of that nature coming in the future?
Dani: I couldn’t tell you, I really couldn’t. We’ve dabbled with it since time immemorial. “Midnight in the Labyrinth” was something we endeavored to do as a sort of project, not as album number 9 or 10, it was something that was a branch of what we were doing. It was made solely for Cradle of Filth fans, because the tracks we used were dictated by their popularity on the website, and of course they were orchestra pieces transcribed from the original albums. So I couldn’t fully answer that. I’d like to, because we are a cinematic band. Talking about cinematic, we actually just finished the shoot for our new video of the track “For Your Vulgar Delectation.” It’s pretty much a short horror movie, there’s zombies and people getting set on fire and it’s pretty nightmarish. We had a lot of fun doing it. While I was doing it I was thinking it would look great set to some instrumental music, but we won’t go there yet.
xFiruath: Speaking of horror movies, we had a chat back in late 2011 I think it was, and you had mentioned wanting to see The Woman in Black and the remake of The Thing. Did you catch those, and did they meet your expectations?
Dani: Well The Woman in Black did yes, that was great and I loved the stage play. Of course it had Harry Potter in it, I think Daniel Radcliffe did a really good job of bringing the claustrophobia of being isolated to it. It was fantastic and a good slice of gothic horror. As for The Thing, I enjoyed it as a prequel, but I think it was let down by the fact that the original relied on special effects that were manufactured and handmade. The new thing was all CGI and it looked a bit shit in places.
xFiruath: What’s happening in horror you are interested in right now?
Dani: I’ve seen a few films that were quite good. The guy did that Cradle of Fear did a cool low-budget thing called Inbred, which was a lot of fun. It’s about a rural community of rednecks, in Britain though, and it’s good and fun. There’s of course the reboot of the Evil Dead coming out. All the remakes have been a bit shit, but this looks like they’ve done a very dark and evil, comic-less version of the original story.
xFiruath: I’ve noticed several front men from the iconic metal bands that have been around for 20+ years…
Dani: Oh that makes me feel old.
xFiruath: …they’ve been branching off and doing their own solo albums or collaborations with other big names. Do you see yourself doing that?
Dani: Well I’ve been working on Temple of the Black Moon, which has Rob from Anthrax and John Tempesta, King formerly of Gorgoroth and now of God Seed, and Ice from Enslaved. We’ve been doing that but we’ve found it hard for a window where all of us are free to work on finishing the record. I think that may change now that Rob has left Anthrax. So we’ve been working on that on and off for the last three years. We’ve got 14 tracks together and we’ve been meeting up in the cold depths of Norway, which has been a good bit of fun. I’m not sure when that’s going to come out.
xFiruath: What’s happening with Cradle of Filth after the North American tour is over?
Dani: Hopefully our new video will be out by then. We’re going to do a South American tour, then we go to Asia for Singapore and China and Thailand I think. That takes us to the end of May, then the Summer festival season starts. Hopefully at the back end of the year we’re looking possibly at going out either to the States again or to Europe. There’s some options open.
xFiruath: Anything else you’d like to cover that I didn’t bring up?
Dani: There’s a special edition, a digital only, coming of “Manticore” with both videos and the making-of, which is quite extensive. I think it will have all the remastered demos with it too. I believe that’s coming out in conjunction with the American tour.
