Cristina Scabbia Tops List Of Fave Female Singers
InsidePulse.com's Tom D'Errico and Gloomchen recently compiled a list of the top 10 female metal vocalists as part of the web site's "Opposing Elements" column. "Keeping with the theme of the column (Opposing Elements), we can't agree on everything," Tom writes. "So, while we each offered up three picks unopposed, we'll have to argue about the last four slots on the list."
Top 10 female metal singers, as selected by InsidePulse.com's Tom D'Errico and Gloomchen:
01. Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil)
02. Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy)
03. Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering)
04. Tanja Lainio (Lullacry)
05. Anita Auglend (Sins of Thy Beloved)
06. Candace Kucsulain (Walls of Jericho)
07. Otep Shamaya (Otep)

Lacuna Coil Doesn't Mind Evanescence Comparisons
LACUNA COIL singer Cristina Scabbia has told MTV.com that the band are not expecting to record any of the the songs they've written over the past 18 months until at least the end of the year. "Waiting for that to happen will just make me more excited for when we do the actual recording of the album," she said. "The new songs we have will be an evolution of 'Comalies' [2002], but not a huge change. I hate bands that are changing every album, because that's not a natural evolution. LACUNA COIL will be recognizable on the next album. This is how it has to be."
Scabbia also spoke about the endless comparisons between LACUNA COIL and EVANESCENCE — an assessment that many fans find unfair considering that LACUNA COIL has been together since 1994, four years longer than EVANESCENCE. "They're a good band and people like them, so why should I be upset [about the comparisons]?" she said. "It's funny, because in Europe we've been known for a while, so people say the opposite thing. They hear EVANESCENCE and say, 'Oh, is this the new single from LACUNA COIL?' "
Regarding LACUNA COIL's participation in this year's Ozzfest festival, Scabbia said, "It's really tough to wake up in time to play. And of course, we're not used to performing in sunlight, so we have to watch out to get sunburns, but it's good to be finished early because then you have the rest of the day free, and you can enjoy the festival."
In addition to watching many of their favorite acts perform daily, they've been able to meet some of their idols. "You'll just be hanging out backstage with the guys in SLIPKNOT, then Zakk Wylde from BLACK LABEL SOCIETY will come by. Then you'll see [JUDAS PRIEST frontman] Rob Halford walking in," Scabbia said. "The whole situation is completely surreal."
"[Drummer] Bill Ward from BLACK SABBATH has become a fan, which is a real honor," she said. "We talk to him almost every day, and he's hosting a radio program that's playing our songs, which is a real honor to us."

Evanescence's Amy Lee Worried About Drawing Crowds
Evanescence singer Amy Lee has admitted to Launch Radio Networks that she was a little nervous about being able to draw enough fans to fill the seats on the band's current North American tour. "It's a little scary, because you always look at the numbers," Lee said. "Like, when we're booked to play a place that's maybe 15,000 or more people, that's a really large amount of people. And when you're thinking of it in terms of, like, 'I'm headlining, can we really pull that many people?', it does make you a little nervous, I guess. You're always, like, just kind of hoping until that last week, when you start to see them really selling, you're like, "Okay, good, whew! Awesome.' (laughs)"
Seether, Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace also appear on the tour.

Body Count To Collaborate With Ben Moody
BODY COUNT, the metal band fronted by legendary rapper Ice T, are slated to contribute a new song to the upcoming "Resident Evil 2" soundtrack. The as-yet-untitled track will apparently be a collaboration between the group and a seemingly unlikely writing partner — former EVANESCENCE guitarist Ben Moody. "We're going to do a song on the new 'Resident Evil 2', and Ben Moody is going to co-produce the song with me," BODY COUNT guitarist Ernie C revealed in an interview with 411Mania.com. "He's going to write a song with BODY COUNT. It sounds weird, but it's a great hard rock record, so he's writing us on [the] 'Resident Evil' [soundtrack]. I met him, he's a really cool guy, he wants to work with us, so we're going to do 'Resident Evil', and that'll be the first song. And I know that's a big achievement — that'll be a big deal."
In the same interview, Ernie spoke about a possible musical direction for the group's long-awaited follow-up to 1997's "Violent Demise: The Last Days", tentatively due next year through an as-yet-undetermined label. "It probably will be a little heavier and a little darker," he said. "We want to do things like work with the detuned guitars and the sludgy sound. We want to make it a little grindy. I know something I want to do, personally, is put some more guitar solos in there. That's something that's missing from a lot of hard rock and metal nowadays. You have some great players, but a lot of them do just rhythm, and they're great at it, but no one really does solos anymore. People don't understand that that's how a guitar player expresses himself. Those are his emotions coming out of that, and it's been missing. So I think I want to bring the old feeling of guitar playing back and combine it with the newer, heavier style."

Amy Lee Was Completely Shocked By Grammy Win
Us Weekly caught up with Evanescence singer Amy Lee and asked her how it felt to win her first Grammy. "It was a complete shock," Lee admitted. "I was content to just sit there like, 'Cool'. I've already done the carpet, the work is over, I'm taking my shoes off... When we won, I was racking my brain, thinking, 'What am I going to say'?" Lee also reavealed she designed the gown who wore to the Grammys herself. "It's kind of my black and pink ballerina thing," she explained.

Ben Moody Talks Frankly About Evanescence Split
Former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody did an interview with Mix 96.1 in San Antonio, talking about why he left the group while the band was in Germany. Moody said he didn't leave the group in a huff, and things were discussed between he, Amy Lee, and the band's management well in advance. Moody implied that Amy Lee played the "damsel in distress" for press purposes, and they agreed one of the two had to go, and Amy didn't want to go solo, so he volunteered. Moody admitted they haven't had a relationship, personal or businesswise, for a long time, and it wasn't working as a band anymore -- so he didn't want to put the band and the crew through that continued tension. He then talked about how he and Avril Lavigne got together, saying that she's is a very nice person to work with and that she's got a shy personality, which is why she's such a difficult person to interview. Moody then talked about his other projects, including a possible solo album. Listen to the enterview at Mix961.com (part1 / part2).
Wes Borland Addresses Rumors
Ex-LIMP BIZKIT guitarist Wes Borland has posted the following message on the web site of his now-defunct post-LIMP BIZKIT band EAT THE DAY:
"I didn't think that I needed to say anything about this, but to be perfectly clear and to address many rumors I have heard, I have not, nor will I ever join the band EVANESCENCE. [NINE INCH NAILS bassist/guitarist/programmer] Danny Lohner and I worked with [EVANESCENCE singer] Amy Lee on the 'Underworld' soundtrack, talked about working with her sometime again in the future, and no plans of doing so as of right now. We are however in the first stages of doing some songs with Rob Zombie, and that looks like it's going to be good. So once again, I am not joining EVANESCENCE."

Cold To Continue Despite Guitarist's Departure
COLD have no intentions of breaking up following the apparent defection of guitarist Terry Balsamo to EVANESCENCE, a source close to the band has told BLABBERMOUTH.NET.
The group, whose latest album, "Year of the Spider", has sold 458,073 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, are expected to release a new single soon. Additionally, Geffen Records are said to have recently notified the band of their intention to exercise the option on COLD's next album.
As reported here yesterday, EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee announced Balsamo's promotion to a full-time member of the group (he was previously filling in for their performance at the American Music Awards and several live gigs) during an interview with Australian web site Undercover Media on Friday (Jan. 16), before the band performed their final show of a Down Under tour.
COLD, whose singer, Scooter Ward, was alleged by Lee to currently be "in and out of rehab and having real problems," have yet to announce a replacement for Balsamo.
