Derelict Issues New Album Update
Canada's Derelict has posted the following lyric explanation online via the band's official website, as well as an update about recording a new album:
"Quick update before the article: Jordan just finished up drums for the new album in studio, and we’re going to have video footage of that in the next few days.
"This is another post in our series about the meanings behind the song lyrics. This time I’m covering ‘Forth With The Herd’:
"I wrote these lyrics when I was in university. At the time, I was working hard on some sound production courses through which I was learning how to engineer and edit. In fact, all of our 2008 EP Carry The Flame, as well as the guitar tracking for Unspoken Words were done through those classes, which was great. (And I met Max there, which turned out for the best, haha.)
"What wasn’t so great was the mentality that I was surrounded with at the time. Perhaps it was the age group, or the class/culture (upper middle-suburban-white) many of my fellow students came from, but I felt like at lot of them had no idea why they were studying. Their parents had pushed them into it and were paying for it, so these kids just went along, sucking the teat, and assuming they would get a six-figure job at the end of a communications degree… ha! These people are part of what I call 'The Seasame Street Generation,' people who were told they could be whatever they wanted to be, so they just go along with the flow without any plan, but still expect to be rich/famous/world leaders/etc.
"The other part that was bothering me was the corporate business aspect of higher education. Call me naïve, but I only realized a few years in that universities really just are businesses. They need corporate sponsorships. They need good PR. That means hypocritical things like publishing a Dean’s list in the newspaper and setting up booths by organizations like the military or credit card companies to try and rope students in. There are many sides to this issue, I know that, but it still bothers me fundamentally.
"In the end, I’m not saying 'fuck higher education,' in fact quite the opposite, I’m saying that there should be more of it and that it should be of better quality. I just don’t think school should ever be used as a substitute for the real world. If you don’t know what the Hell to do with your life, get some kind of job, travel, try things, but for fuck’s sake don’t just go into some program because someone else said it was a good idea. Go when you’re ready and grow up in the meantime." More...
Derelict Comments On Band Lyrics
Montreal's Derelict has checked in with the following statement about the lyrics for the "Pirates" track:
"Hi guys, Eric here. This is another post in our series about the meanings behind our lyrics. This time, I’m covering ‘Pirates.' There is no denying that these are the silliest lyrics I’ve ever written for Derelict.
"I wrote a bit about the novel 'Odinn’s Child' by Tim Severin in my ‘Summoning the Firestorm’ post, and this song was inspired by that book as well. The main character ends up on a Viking expedition to North America around the year 1,000, before it was discovered by the European empires hundreds of years later. (Interestingly enough, there are further theories that other Europeans had been to America even before the Vikings. Read into about that here.) More...
Derelict Performance Footage Available
Footage has been posted online of Montreal act Derelict performing the song "Machete," which can be viewed below. The band also commented:
"It’s hard to begin to explain how awesome this video makes us feel… one of our signature tunes, played in the most metal venue in our home town, with a pit of fans in front of us and the mighty Decapitated‘s banner behind us. Awesome!
"Thanks to Montreal Metal Shows for shooting this! And in case you missed the Polarized live vid that surfaced a few days ago from the same show, here it is."
Derelict Issues Show Recap
Canada's Derelict has checked in with the following recap of recent shows and update about recording new material:
"Happy Halloween! Eric here. We had an excellent run of shows, starting with the Decapitated/Decrepit Birth/Fleshgod Apocalypse/Rings of Saturn tour stop on Oct 26th in Montreal. It was amazing to play alongside some of our influences and favorite bands, and the Montreal crowd got there right for the beginning, so we had a great crowd despite it being 6:30pm. Check out this live video of ‘Polarized’:
"Next was Brantford on Oct 28th, where we played ShredFest, a charity concert benefiting the Help A Child Smile Foundation. Great to play alongside our brothers in Endast, Misguided Aggression, Exes For Eyes, and Besegra. More...
Derelict Comments On Montreal Scene
Guitarist Max Lussier of Canadian death metal act Derelict has posted the following blog online discussing the Montreal metal scene:
"Very often in life we ask ourselves or others how we are influenced by our surroundings. This is true in many walks of life. Our surroundings affect how we dress, what music we listen to and many other things too numerous to list properly right now. As someone who writes music, in this case death metal music, I have to say that my surroundings have had a great impact on my playing and songwriting.
"We in Derelict are very fortunate to call Montreal home. Montreal is a very lively and artistic city where you can attend some sort of artistic performance or live a nightlife experience pretty much any night of the week. It’s also a fairly unique city in that the French and English languages live in relative harmony. What is also true about Montreal is that it has a world-class metal scene.
"When I was a young teenager and discovering the heavier arts, some of the bands I stumbled upon after the Big 4 were Iced Earth, Opeth, Death, Arch Enemy and Deicide. I was off to a good start when I saw someone mention Cryptopsy in a magazine (that’s right, metal sites were not as common back then). My friend Pat and I first listened to the song 'White Worms.' I couldn’t believe that this type of brutal music even existed, let alone that the band was from my hometown! After that life-changing event it didn’t take long for me to realize just how much of a brutal bastion of metal this city really was. More...
Derelict Explains Recording Drums
Derelict has checked in with the following blog update about laying down drum tracks:
"Hey guys, it’s Jordan here to talk about the process I use to prepare for laying down my drum tracks in the studio.
"When I first learn a Derelict song, I go section by section and come up with a beat for each one. Usually I’ll have a general idea of what I want, and then I’ll spend a bit of time making sure I can play it tightly. It can happen though that I come up with a beat in my mind that I can’t even play in reality. In those cases, I’ll break the rhythm down and play each hand and each foot separately until I can play each respective part on it’s own. Then I’ll put them together one by one. For example, I’ll learn the pattern I’ll be playing with my right hand. Then I’ll learn the left hand pattern separately, then put the two together. I’ll do the same thing for my feet and play every combination of hand and foot until I’m ready to put all four patterns together. I use this practice method primarily for complex poly-rhythms that require a lot of limb separation.
"At this point I’ve learned all the songs that are to be recorded for our next album. My main focus now is going back over all of them, making sure all the parts work and that I can play them perfectly. I’m also going over all the parts that seem uninspired or lacking in some way and beefing them up or rewriting them until I’m happy with them. When they’re up to speed I’ll be shooting videos of each one and putting them up on our Youtube channel periodically after the album comes out.
"I’ve spent a lot of time on the parts for this record, and I’m hitting the studio in mid November. Can’t wait for you guys to hear it! Here’s Jordan’s drum video playlist."
Derelict Issues Update On New Album
Derelict has checked in with the following update about working on a new album:
"Greetings everyone! Max here and I’m very excited to write the first of what will now be a regular Derelict blog. We will be talking to you guys about a whole bunch of things like lyrics, the songwriting process, different thoughts we have about music, and possibly peanut butter sandwiches.
"For the moment I think you guys deserve a full update on the band and what we’re up to. Many things have happened since the Northern Shores tour. Some good things as well as some less good things but all in all we are very happy with the direction the band is taking and can’t wait for you all to hear it. As of right now our new album is fully written and arranged. We have 12 tracks for close to 45 minutes of brutal, yet melodic, death metal on the way. Our new guitarist Collin McGee has been a welcome addition to our ranks and his leads will contribute to taking our music to a new level of musicianship.
"We recently hosted a private party here in Montreal where we premiered a bunch of our new tracks to some of the local Metal Militia and had a great time. The feedback was very positive so we’re all very excited about that. Besides that we were extremely pleased to be offered a slot opening for Decapitated, Decrepit Birth, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Rings of Saturn at Foufounnes Electriques on Wednesday, October 26th (Event here). This will be a great gig for us and hopefully those of you in the area will come out to see it! More...

Derelict Recruits New Guitarist
Derelict has checked in with the following update about recruiting a new guitar player:
"Greetings! We've been waiting a little while to announce some rather important news, because we wanted to be able to show you something to make it concrete. If you don't like reading, go here (it's a photo album on Facebook).
"The news is that we have a new guitar player. We parted ways with George a few months back, after 11 great shows and numerous good times. George got an important career offer and took it, but it prevented him from being in the band full-time. We're happy for him as all seems to be working out, and it's great that his solo on Expiry got immortalized on the EP version.
"Replacing him is new gun Collin McGee. Originally from Wemindji, QC, Collin is also the lead man in Elderoth, which you can hear here. His new album should be out around the same time as Derelict's, so everyone will definitely be getting their fair share of Collin McGee shreds in 2012!"

Pit Stories: An Unexpected Dose Of Violence
We've been talking with bands and fans everywhere to get their mosh pit stories. This week Eric Burnet of Montreal death metal act Derelict shares a story of a lazy pit getting a sudden dose of unexpected violence, Ninja Turtle style, along with a helpful tip about avoiding prison so you don't have to cut your hair.
You know how sometimes at local underground shows, the pit doesn't really get going for the first few bands? How people just kind of shyly stand around and wait for someone drunker or braver to start the pit? Well, standing amidst that crowd of pre-moshers can be a dangerous thing.
We were out on a weekend mini-tour, playing in Brantford, Ontario. The first couple of bands on the bill were quite young, and so were their fans. The pit was taking it's sweet time to get going, and many members of the other bands, myself included, were watching the show from pretty close up, as there was no dangerous action occurring. I had recently suffered a bike accident in Montreal (got rammed by a speed biker!) and I had a pretty big circular scabbed wound on my left arm. Out of nowhere, these two kids, who turned out to be a dual-vocal team from a later band, ran out into the middle of the non-pit and did a Ninja Turtle roll. By this I mean that one of them bent over to 90 degrees, and the other rolled his back over the bent-over dude's back, like the Ninja Turtles. When he landed, they both started hardcore dancing wildly and trying to start a pit. The guy who had rolled, I guess from having been rendered dizzy from his ninja flip, lost his balance and smashed into the line of people quietly enjoying the show. I got propelled into a brick wall and fell, scrapping off my scab in the process and starting to bleed all over my arm.
I'm generally not the violent type, but I have a certain line involving lacks of respect and personal attacks that should not be crossed. I walked over to the kid with the full intention of sending him to the hospital, but then something clicked in my head. It said: "Wait! You're an adult, this kid is a minor. If you go to prison, you'll probably have to cut your hair."
Thankfully, I decided to go walk it off in downtown Brantford instead of murdering anyone. However, I sort of forgot our set time and got back just in time to play, and there's live footage somewhere of me playing that set with blood still dripping down my arm. I still have the stupid scar, although the anger has subsided and I just find it funny now.
Derelict is currently working on its next full-length album, which was previewed with a recent EP release. You can check out the entire promo EP or download the track "Perpetuation" for free at the Derelict Bandcamp page. The band has also posted a separate drum track from the song, which can be found here.
Check back next Tuesday as we share more Pit Stories from band members and metal heads.
Derelict Posts "Perpetuation" Live Footage
Derelict has posted footage online of the band performing the "Perpetuation" track, which is off the band's 2011 promo EP, in Ottawa at Café Dekcuf on June 15th, 2011. You can check out the clip below, or download the song for free at the Derelict Bandcamp page.
Derelict Comments On "Perpetuation" Track
Montreal technical death metal band Derelict has commented on the creation of the new song "Perpetuation" through Antimusic.com. Vocalist Eric Burnet stated:
"Hello! Eric here from Derelict. I'm going to tell you the story behind our song 'Perpetuation,' off our 2011 promo EP. The track will be on our upcoming full-length album, and is currently a free download on our bandcamp page.
"We never really stop writing in Derelict. Right after the release of our 2009 album, 'Unspoken Words', we were already working on new stuff. In fact, everyone in the band writes music and we currently have songs from myself, our guitar player Max, and our drummer Jordan in the works.
"However, mid-2010 we went through a bit of a crisis on tour with some important lineup changes. The remaining core of the band was left pondering our future and trying to envision what to do about moving forward. It was around this time that I started working on the music for 'Perpetuation'. It wasn't entirely intentional, but I think I wanted to remind myself, in one streamlined song, what Derelict meant to me musically. I endeavored to include all of our best characteristics into something that would scream, not only to the fans, but to us, 'we're here, we're alive, and we're not going anywhere!' More...
Derelict Posts Drum Performance Footage
Jordan Perry, drummer for Montreal technical death metal band Derelict, has posted a new performance video for the song "Perpetuation," which can be found by heading over here.
"This is one of our shortest songs to date, but it's the one I'm the most proud of as far as the drum parts go," says Perry. "I wanted to maintain an unrelenting feel, but add elements I hadn't used previously."
"Perpetuation" is currently available as a free track download via Derelict's Bandcamp page at this location. Perry also has instructional videos explaining how to perform his heel toe kick drum technique, his take on blast beats, and his warmup routine, on the band's youtube channel.
Derelict Streaming New EP
Montreal tech death shredders Derelict have just put their self-titled 2011 promo EP up for sale on their Bandcamp page for $1.99, which includes the opening track, "Perpetuation," as a free download. The songs are also available for streaming through the same location.
"We originally intended this EP to simply be a promotional lead-up to the next album, but our fans have been asking us to make the tracks available," comments vocalist Eric Burnet. "They were produced at full album quality, so we figured, why not! In this day and age bands can't afford to hold music back for no reason, and if people want to have it, we're more than happy to deliver it."
The EP features three songs that will be on the band's next full-length, due out in late 2011. Similarly to the band's 2009 release "Unspoken Words," tracking duties were shared by Burnet and Montreal engineer Kevin Frenette, with mixing and mastering completed by Chris Donaldson (Beneath The Massacre, The Agonist, etc). Bass duties were provided courtesy of Swiss fretless guru Seb Pittet (Augury).
Over the next few months, Derelict will be putting the finishing touches on the band's next full-length and playing select shows around Quebec and Ontario.
Derelict Tracks Available For Free Download
Canada's Derelict is currently offering two songs off the band's "Unspoken Words" album as free downloads. The band issued the following brief statement:
"Free download tracks available: On the Derelict Bandcamp, 'Machete' and 'Summoning the Firestorm' are now free downloads. Grab some metal."

Derelict Discusses The Band's Future
Derelict recently conducted an interview with the online zine HatredMeansWar, in which the band discussed the band's plan for an upcoming album and tour dates. Excerpts from the interview follow.
HatredMeansWar: Can you update us with what is going on with the band these days?
Eric: We're working pretty hard to promote our new EP, getting it out there, getting people to respond to it. Meanwhile we're writing the rest of our next album, which we're finishing in studio this Fall. In between we're playing lots of shows, and dealing with our van that seems to break down every 3 days, haha.
HatredMeansWar:Do you have any touring plans for the upcoming future?
Eric: With our next album, we're hoping to get out of Canada and go either to the US or Europe. The only real challenge is money. Time off from jobs, repairing vehicles, paying for touring visas... Those are the obstacles. They're not insurmountable, but they require time to prepare for. Rising gas prices and declining in-store CD sales really don't help. We'll also be touring Canada again at some point. Right now though the main focus is the next album.
HatredMeansWar:When can we expect the next full length?
Eric: We very much hope to have it out before the end of 2011. If all goes well there will be a string of release shows in Canada in Fall 2011. It all depends on some business details but that's really the goal.More...
Derelict Posts New Song
Montreal technical death metallers Derelict have begun streaming the third of three tracks from their new promo EP. You can check out the song "Yours To Surpass" in the video clip below. "Yours to Surpass" is the first song for the band composed by guitarist Max Lussier. "The track is pretty fast and technical from a guitar standpoint," comments Lussier. "I tried to write the music as organically as possible, like a stream of consciousness from part to part."
"We worked with Chris Donaldson (Beneath The Massacre, The Agonist, etc) again for the mix and master, and we got Sébastien Pittet (ex-Augury touring bassist) on fretless bass duties," explains vocalist Eric Burnet. "All in all we're pretty psyched and we hope this gets people excited for our next album."
The previously uploaded song "Expiry" is also available at this location.
Derelict Posts New Promo Song
Montreal metallers Derelict have begun streaming the second track from their new promo EP. You can listen to the song "Expiry" in the clip below. "This is a really angry song," explains vocalist Eric Burnet. "It's about having to pay for our abuse of the planet by watching it fall apart around us."
"Expiry" is the second of three songs being released this month as part of Derelict's new promotional demo. "Although we're labeling this as a demo, the production is full album quality," says Burnet. "We went with Chris Donaldson (Beneath The Massacre, The Agonist, etc) again for the mix and master, and we got Sébastien Pittet (ex-Augury touring bassist) on fretless bass duties. All in all we're pretty psyched and we hope this gets people excited for our next album."
Over the next few months Derelict will be putting the finishing touches on the band's next release, playing select shows around Quebec, Ontario, and the East Coast, and looking at expanding their reach to the US and Europe.
