Eddie Van Halen Hopeful For New Music and Tour

Billboard.com reports: Almost nine months since Van Halen wrapped its first tour since 1984 with original lead singer David Lee Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen is hopeful there will be future activity for the group.

Van Halen tells Spinner.com that after he and girlfriend Janie Liszewski get married in June and his son Wolfgang (who played bass on the reunion tour) graduates from high school, he plans to discuss recording new music, which he says he has "tons of."

"If Dave's up for singing ... then do another tour, and just see where it takes us," Van Halen said. "Actually, next week or the week after Wolfie, Alex and I are gonna start jamming. Maybe we'll give Dave a call and see what he's up to. He's off, always doing his own thing, and he checks in every now and then to see how we're doing."

Sammy Hagar Speaks On Van Halen-McCain Issue

Former Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar has said the following regarding Presidential candidate John McCain using the Van Halen song "Right Now":

"When I wrote the lyrics to 'Right Now' I intended them to inspire people to not sit around and wait for something they believed in but to go out and get it ' to make a change however they needed to," he said in a statement. "Whether it was McCain who used the song or if Obama had chosen to use the song, with the current political climate, the lyrics still have the same meaning, and we all need to do something to make a difference, every action counts. In fact, I still feel so strongly about this that I wrote a new song "Cosmic Universal Fashion" with a young Iraqi musician in an attempt to motivate a new generation to the same affect. I am pleased to be associated with the lyrics to my original song and the new one in hopes that both will make people move to make a difference."

Van Halen Angry With John McCain

TMZ.com reports that John McCain used a VAN HALEN song during his big speech earlier today and the band wants to make to make one thing clear — they're not running with McCain.

VAN HALEN management told TMZ.com that the band had no idea McCain was planning on using "Right Now" during his big entrance in Ohio. "Permission was not sought or granted nor would it have been given," the management said.

George W. Bush reportedly used the same song during a bunch of his campaign speeches back in 2004, but sources close to the band tell TMZ.com, "They're [the bandmembers] not political, they're just rock and roll."

Van Halen Tour Grosses More Than $93 Million

Billboard.com reports: Though not without setbacks, the Van Halen reunion tour ended up a massive success, wrapping June 2 in Grand Rapids, Mich., with a total gross of more than $93 million and close to one million in attendance from 74 shows.

The tour featured founding members David Lee Roth, and Eddie and Alex Van Halen, along with Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen.

After initially being set up as an amphitheater tour for the summer of 2007, the Live Nation-produced reunion temporarily derailed when guitarist Eddie Van Halen entered rehab. But it was resurrected as a fall arena run that stretched into 2008.

The tour was delayed again in March because of health issues for Eddie, then returned to the road in April to finish with a flourish.

The shows marked the first time Roth had performed with the band in more than 23 years. Van Halen's handlers say it was the top-grossing tour in the band's history.

Guitar Tech Discusses Van Halen's Guitar Playing

Eddie Van Halen's guitar tech Tom Weber discussed Eddie's guitar playing and the current reunion tour with the Grand Rapids Press.

"Ed is a force of nature. I understand the math behind how a guitar works. Ed does things on the guitar that defy the math," raved Weber. "I've sat with him and watched him do things that you can't do. Ed doesn't play guitar; the guitar submits to Ed's will. It's truly an amazing thing. It's a very inspiring place to be."

The tour was interrupted earlier this year so Van Halen -- who previously has battled tongue cancer and substance abuse problems -- could be treated for an unspecified medical condition. The band expects a climactic finish in West Michigan. Weber said the recent resumption of the last leg of the tour in mid-April has exceeded expectations.

"I think the hiatus did everybody good. We did the show in Reno, the first show back, and I stood with my hair standing on end with near tears in my eyes," Weber recalled.

Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitar Songs

The June 12th 2008 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine features the cover story 'The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs Of All Time'. Explaining the feature is the blurb:

This is what makes a great rock & roll guitar sound: an irresistible riff; a solo or jam that takes you higher every time you hear it; the final power chord that pins you to the wall and makes you hit "play" again and again. Every song here has those thrills. But these are rock's greatest guitar moments because of what's inside the notes: hunger, fury, despair and joy, often all at once. You hear the blues, gospel and rockabilly that came before, transormed by the need to say something new and loud, right away. Rock & roll has been the sound of independence for half a century. The guitar is still its essential, liberating voice. These are the 100 reasons why.

The top 10 guitar songs according to the article are:

1. "Johnny B. Goode" - Chuck Berry
2. "Purple Haze" - Jimi Hendrix
3. "Crossroads" - Cream
4. "You Really Got Me" - The Kinks
5. "Brown Sugar" - The Rolling Stones
6. "Eruption" - Van Halen
7. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - The Beatles
8. "Stairway To Heaven" - Led Zeppelin
9. "Statesboro Blues" - The Allman Brothers Band
10. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana

VAN HALEN's first tour in 22 years with David Lee Roth on the mic was put on hold last month, with promoters stating that guitarist Eddie Van Halen was undergoing "medical tests to define a course of treatment." A recurrence of cancer or a fall off the wagon were both rumored as the cause of the guitarist's woes, with the National Enquirer even reporting that he checked into a Texas rehab clinic.

Eddie Van Halen Apparantly Not In Rehab

Reuters reports: Actress Valerie Bertinelli has said her ex-husband Eddie Van Halen is not in rehab, but she declined to say exactly what is ailing the rock guitarist, People.com reported on Wednesday.

"The reports about him being in rehab are wrong. Eddie is sober," Bertinelli said at a New York luncheon hosted by cable TV's Hallmark Channel, according to the Web site of celebrity magazine People.

This month rock band VAN HALEN, which Eddie co-founded with his brother Alex, canceled it's tour dates until April 19th and said the 53 year-old guitarist is undergoing medical tests. But the band has not divulged details of his illness.

In the 1990s, Eddie Van Halen had hip replacement surgery and was treated for oral cancer. He also has battled alcohol abuse with a stint in rehab, which led to current speculation about a return to treatment.

Bertinelli on Wednesday said "he's being proactive about his illness" but declined to be more specific.

Van Halen had a string of hits including 'Runnin' With The Devil' and 'Panama' starting in the late 1970s. In August the group unveiled plans for its current 25-city North American tour that began in September 2007.

Eddie Van Halen Back In Rehab?

According to Pr-inside.com, sources tell the National Enquirer the 53-year-old guitarist checked himself into a clinic near San Antonio, Texas, so he could detox for a week after a furious backstage bust-up in Florida with his 17-year-old son and bandmate Wolfgang.

An insider says, "It was the big what-if of the tour - whether Eddie could stay sober.

"Wolf hates it when his dad drinks. He knew Eddie was drunk onstage that night, and was acting cold to him, which set Eddie off. Eddie went beserk and started yanking guitar cables from the pedal boards and throwing cigarettes around onstage.

"At the end of the concert, Eddie was so mad at Wolf, he punched the amp speaker, knocking it over." Van Halen enjoyed a stint in rehab last year (2007), which delayed plans for the comeback tour.
