Most of us in metal love to complain about trolling, irrational vitriol, subgenre tribalism, and elitism online. Not to mention the fact that most of said complaining also takes place online.
It’s like plugging the cord of a power strip into the strip itself and expecting it to produce juice. No wonder nothing positive ever seems to get accomplished.
So how do we fix this?
Well, we can’t. At least we can’t fix others. We can, however, control ourselves and try new things from time to time. And when considering just how ridiculously much time we spend drooling in front of our screens, the simple act of attending live music concerts is indeed a “new thing,” or at least a relatively seldom thing. Sort of like shutting off Facebook and actually writing your best friend a letter.
But don’t the same issues manifest in our local clubs? A package tour comes to town, containing bands with separate (or, at best, overlapping) fanbases, which promptly begin to work against each other. Show me such a concert that isn’t brimming with guys judging each other’s perceived tastes, putting on airs by boasting “I’m only here for [insert obscure opener],” and I’ll show you my fourth nipple.
How about major European-style summer festivals? Don’t get me started. Don’t get me wrong, either; they’re ten tons of fun. But often the numbers are too immense for any type of bonding to occur on a mass scale. Crowds usually just devolve into cliques, all corresponding to their chosen favorite acts.
So there needs to be a middle ground. A unique event, rare and special enough to draw the enthusiastic, but familiar enough to include the curious. Small and precarious enough to forestall any jaded complacency, and large enough to foster a carnival atmosphere.
The musical equivalent of a big group of friends around a campfire, bonded not only by the fun they’re sharing, but also by the knowledge that one bad attitude will douse the good time in cold water.
For me, the DeLand Rock & Metal Festival was that event. And for the moment, it has alleviated some of my cynicism over the much-ballyhooed “brotherhood and sisterhood” concepts thrown around in metal.
Here, in central Florida, from November 7th through the 9th, these bonds were very much alive.
Female-front hard rock fest, Dame-Nation, will be hosting it's fifth annual event in Chicago, IL on August 15th, 2013. Dame-Nation V will include the recently reunited Luna Mortis, set to perform at Reggies Chicago in The Rock Room. Dame-Nation owner and producer Eric Sanchez comments:
"I had the pleasure of finally meeting Mary from Luna Mortis a month or so ago. We were able to discuss a topic that I've wanted to ask for quite a few years, but didn't have a chance since Luna Mortis was broken up. I had heard that they were reuniting and wanted to know if they would like to headline the 5th anniversary of Dame-Nation. This year is a special one for me and to have Mary and the boys be a part of this years festivities will make it even more memorable for everyone involved, including the fans."
The fest will feature two stages: the main stage being the Rock Club Stage and the second stage being the Music Joint stage. Reggies Chicago is located at 2109 South State Street, Chicago, IL 60616.

This winter Mary Zimmer (formerly of the Madison, WI-based metal act Luna Mortis) & LA-based singer/songwriter VK Lynne take you into their homes and into their heads for their new web series. Check out a teaser trailer for the new "Tracking the Trade" series in the player below. The musicians have also released the following statement regarding the upcoming project:
“We’ve been wanting to do a project together for a long time. However, other commitments and distance hampered our efforts- until now. We sat down to discuss our collaboration on a new song. Via Skype, we began talking about our experiences in the music business, good and bad…and discovered that the biggest obstacle to making music… is lack of knowledge.
"In today’s environment, labels are expecting more and more of their artists, and indie/DIY acts are becoming plentiful. Whatever route you choose, you will need to keep your head, and hope that it is full of solid information about your creative and legal options, rights and responsibilities, both to yourself - and to those around you.
"We discovered that we both had a strong desire to share what we’d learned throughout our experiences, and show how it all applied to this project. Thus, ‘Tracking the Trade’ was born.
"In each episode, we will take our viewers through a step on our journey. How we did it, why we did it, and what we could do differently. This process will be interactive; if you want to know more about something, ask us! If we know, we’ll tell you. If we don’t know, we’ll find out. Likewise, we will turn to you for your thoughts and suggestions along the way.
"If all goes well, by the conclusion, we will have an awesome song, and we’ll all be better equipped to navigate this new music terrain - and get down to making more music with less confusion!" More...
Wisconsin based vocalist Mary Zimmer (formerly of Luna Mortis) announces her return to the stage this coming Saturday, October 13th 2012 at The Frequency in Madison.
2010 saw the breakup of the Wisconsin metal band Luna Mortis, whose final album "The Absence" was released via Century Media Records. Mary's return to the stage Oct. 13th is her first major live appearance after the dissolution of the act.
Zimmer will be making her solo appearance as "Metal Mary and The Hired Guns" - a special one-time event with a group of established musicians from the Wisconsin rock and metal scenes.
"I am hitting the stage to play with a band for the first time [other than guest appearances] since the breakup of Luna Mortis and I am incredibly excited to be sharing the stage with a group of amazing musicians," states Zimmer. "There will be a lot of first's at this show, including my first time playing in a formalized band with my sister, Emily Zimmer, on lead guitar. It's also the first time I will be playing and singing at the piano for a song or two in a live band setting. I am extremely excited for this event, everyone in this band is at the absolute top of their game musically and while it's a one-time show for us, it's going to be one of the most incredible shows we've ever played." Wisconsin female fronted metal band Luna Mortis has announced that they have decided to disband. Lead guitarist Brian Koenig issued the following statement regarding their decision to disband:
"I regret to say that as of today the band will be dissolving and we will be going our separate ways. A huge thanks from the bottom of our hearts for the fans and support we have received over the course of the last 9 years. It has been an exciting and often turbulent ride, but everything must come to an end eventually. Unfortunately, we will be unable to go on the May tour with Primal Fear, so our apologies to the people who were looking forward to hanging with us out on the road. To our local fans, we will more than likely be playing one more Madison show sometime in the next few months, we'll keep everyone posted"
Luna Mortis was recently dropped from Century Media Records. In December vocalist Mary Zimmer commented on their uncertain future as a band after being dropped by their label, "Does this mean Luna Mortis will not be releasing another album? No. It just means that soon, we will be label-less and have a few decisions to make about what our next move will be and what we'd like to do in regard to the future of the band."
Vocalist Mary Zimmer of Luna Mortis has issued the following update:
"As a lot of you guys have noticed, we have been announced as the direct support for Primal Fear in North America from the end of May-June of 2010. This is true, we are really excited about the tour, I am going to post the dates today. It's going to be a great tour, covering more of the US this time, including Texas and some southern areas we have never played before. We look forward to going out on the road with Primal Fear, who are an excellent band and terrific musicians."
"The next thing that a few of you have messaged my personal profile about is the fact that we now appear listed in the 'alumni' list of the Century Media website. This is because we are in fact, being dropped by Century Media and will not be releasing another record with them. Does this mean Luna Mortis will not be releasing another album? No. It just means that soon, we will be label-less and have a few decisions to make about what our next move will be and what we'd like to do in regard to the future of the band." More...

This will be our first video from our new album, The Absence, and we can't wait to share it with you guys... it was filmed by David Brodsky of My Good Eye music videos. Check him out here and watch some other videos he's done...
"We filmed the video right here in Wisconsin, in a small town not too far from Madison, called Monroe. They had a performance center called the Monroe Arts Center, which used to be a church, but now is used for concerts. They were kind enough to let us shoot there and the video is going to be absolutely epic. Lots of Stained glass windows and a wide open space are going to make this video look very cool. It was a very unlikely place to shoot a metal video but it worked out great..."
