Hear Her Roar: Women In Metal
Today marks International Women's Day, in which we remember the contributions of many great women throughout history as well as in the world today. The day was first celebrated by the Socialist Party Of America on February 28th 1909. The tradition of celebrating women on March 8th was first done in the then newly formed Soviet Union, who declared the day a national holiday. It was adopted by other Communist and Socialist countries as a holiday before the United Nations recognised the event in 1975. Today the significance of the day varies, still being a public holiday in some countries, a day of protest in others and officially ignored in a number of other nations. So, what does all this have to do with heavy metal? Marie Curie, Rosa Luxemburg, Angela Davis and Joan Of Arc may not be common names in the metal world, but we have plenty of our own heroines and ladies to rival the lords.
For a long time, the role of women in heavy metal was seen by outsiders as miniscule or worse, nothing more than objects. Perhaps women have more of a role in metal music than previously thought however. Let's take for example what's considered the first heavy metal album, "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. The cover art depicts a mysterious woman, cloaked in black, stood right in the middle of an illustration of Mapledurham Watermill in Oxfordshire. This is only a tiny example of course, but as heavy metal grew, so did the presence of women. Bands would often sing about women, be it in the context of relationships ("Victim Of Changes" by Judas Priest for example, was comprised of two earlier songs "Whisky Woman" and "Red Light Lady,") sex "Charlotte The Harlot" by Iron Maiden or as inspirations ("Jet City Woman" by Queensryche.) Ty Arthur Releasing New Grimdark Novel
Following his debut sci-fi novella “Empty” from 2016, heavy metal scribe Ty Arthur (Metalunderground.com's very own xFiruath) returns with new full-length horror novel “Light Dawning.” Pivoting away from the emptiness of space, the book dives headlong into the waters of fantasy, but with a seriously grimdark twist.
This next foray into the bleaker corners of human existence is officially slated for release on Friday, May 26th, 2017. Kindle digital pre-orders are now online here, with physical editions to follow shortly.
Like its predecessor, the creation of “Light Dawning” was driven forward by the power of music, with special thanks in particular due to U.K. avant-garde black metal group Code, Norwegian musical enigma Ihsahn, and Chilean prog rock group Bauda. To get an advance preview of the themes and tone of the novel, a music playlist matching several scenes can be heard via Spotify here or in the player below.
Once known as the City on the Hill and revered far and wide for its independence and boundless opportunity, Cestia has become home only to the damned. Surviving under the brutal occupation of a southern empire for three long years, the oppressed populace has lost hope of liberation, turning instead towards an increasingly desperate rebellion willing to commit any atrocity for a chance at freedom.
As total war approaches, four lost souls trapped behind Cestia's walls are on a collision course with fate, destined to either save the city or see it utterly destroyed while calling on forces beyond mankind's comprehension. For good or ill, the light of a new day is about to dawn. More...

Sunday Old School: Tristania
It's that time of year in the Northern hemisphere when the sun's out, the shorts are on and the Facebook feeds are filled with people complaining about the heat... Perfect timing for some Scandinavian gothic metal, don't you think? Gothic metal is largely attributed to British band Paradise Lost, not least due to the title of their sophomore full length, "Gothic," but has since gone on to become a popular and successful sub-genre in it's own right, probably providing the most female musicians in any of metal's varied offshoots. One of the first bands to lay the template for operatic, female vocals hails from the west of Norway and continue to hold a special place amongst fans of the genre, is Tristania.
Tristania was formed in 1995 by vocalist/guitarist Morten Veland, drummer Kenneth Ølsson and keyboardist Einar Moen and were joined in their musical pursuits a few weeks later by guitarist Anders Høyvik Hidle and bass player Rune Østerhus. While recording a demo, the group decided to bring in Vibeke Stene as a guest vocalist, who was soon recruited as a permanent member, although she was unaware of this until after the band signed with Napalm Records and released their debut album, "Widow's Weeds." The album itself drew considerable praise and is considered a classic in the gothic metal genre, thanks to the contrasting, "beauty and the beast" vocals and symphonic elements. More...

Tristania Issues Track-By-Track Breakdown
Norwegian act Tristania will be releasing new album "Darkest White" this coming May 31st, 2013. The band has now posted a final studio report online with comments on all the tracks from the release. You can read the full report at the band's website here, and excerpts from the track-by-track breakdown follow:
"Darkest White is brutal in its nature, yet very catchy. The verses include quite harsh and distorted vocals by Kjetil and the growling takes over in the chorus. As mentioned in the last part of the studio report, we started the guitar recordings with this song. I remember flying high after listening to the new recording with the amazing guitar sounds Christer had created. The shouting choir in the chorus is a mixture of vocals by Kjetil and me. Like with all of these new songs, I love Tarald’s lyrics for this one. The title was early suggested as an album title. This is the first piece of music we have presented from the album. The feedback has been quite overwhelming.
"Himmelfall is the first Tristania song to date with a Norwegian title. The song features some amazing vocal performances by Mariangela and Kjetil. Kjetil does some really cool low-pitched lines in the verses and Mariangela shines in the choruses where she is doing really powerful stuff.
I think Himmelfall will be a great song to include in our live set. It has a nice heavy and bombastic feel that goes through the entire song. We started to rehearse a live version of it for the upcoming festivals, and it really sounds promising. More...

Tristania Issues New Album Studio Report
Gothic metal act Tristania will be releasing new album "Darkest White" via Napalm Records on May 31st, 2013. Tristania guitarist Anders has now posted an extensive studio report online via the band's website here, and excerpts from the studio report follow:
"It has been a few weeks since we completed the recordings for our 7th album, Darkest White. It has been intense. Everything recorded within one month. That’s very fast for a band like Tristania (shortest recording period so far), especially considering our four singers and the detailed arrangements. It has been long days and nights in four different studios. Rich amounts of stress, pressure, frustration and minimal sleep. But definitely worth it.
"While I’m writing this, the album is finally completed, and we’ve just received the final mastered version of the album. We are very proud of the finished product. For the first time I can honestly say that I’m 100% satisfied with the sound on a Tristania album. Even more remarkable for me, it’s the first time I can say that the general vibe of the final result turned out exactly as I was hoping for – only better.
"When entering studio to record an album, you always have goals for how you want the songs to end up; some kind of vision you want to fulfill. It is not always easy to describe with words, but you know exactly how you want the vibe of the album to be at the end of the day. This time around we wanted these songs to sound brutal, intense and full of energy. The sound on our two previous albums has been quite clean and controlled. It was obvious that these songs deserved a different approach. More...
Tristania Reveals New Album Cover Artwork
Tristania has now revealed the cover artwork for new album "Darkest White," which was created by metal cover artist favorite Eliran Kantor. The album is due out via Napalm Records on May 31st, 2013.
According to a press release, with "Darkest White" Tristania ventures into a considerably darker soundscape than on the previous album, both musically and lyrically. The emotional span of the album is bigger, ranging from the most brutal primal aggression to the most fragile and poignant moments. The album features an array of grand arrangements, doomy moods, and elaborate harmonies blended with intense growling: a flamboyant display of outstanding vocal performances.
Tristania's Ole Vistnes comments: "After the release of Rubicon in 2010, I felt that we had opened the door to our new musical landscape, but that we still had a lot of places to explore creatively. With Darkest White we have dug deeper, searched wider and reached higher to create the most musically challenging and emotionally involving album we possibly could. Like all Tristania albums, I feel this one is detached from musical rules and genre expectations, and perfectly represents the musical freedom that I so much love about Tristania.
"During the writing and recording of the album we worked hard to create the album we had in our minds, but we were also careful to let the songs live a life on their own. We didn’t set out to make the album technically outstanding or theoretically perfect, but we followed our hearts in all parts of the writing and production. I’m proud of Darkest White, mostly because of the uncompromising honesty and attitude that saturated everything from the songwriting and recording to the mix." More...
