Svartsot Posts New Lyric Video Online

Although it has been quite a while since Svartsot have released new material, the band is still very much alive and kicking. In the interim since 2015’s Vældet, the beer-soaked folk metallers have been active on the live scene in Denmark and abroad, including appearances at various major festivals as well as at the prestigious 70000 Tons Of Metal cruise in 2019. After a change of bassist and the decision to shelve an album’s worth of material in 2017/18, the idea of releasing a collection of traditional folk songs that have inspired the band, reworked in Svartsot’s characteristic style, was spawned.

The original idea was to release their fifth album, entitled Kumbl” (an old Danish word meaning 'monument' or 'memorial'), in 2020 to coincide with Svartsot’s 15th anniversary. However, due to various practicalities, the album was first recorded — by none other than the band’s drummer and up-and-coming producer, Frederik Uglebjerg, during the pandemic. The release also marks the band’s first collaboration with Danish metal label, Mighty Music.

Check out the first single from the record, "Drømte Mig En Drøm", below. More...

Live Concert Report: 2021 Metal Aid (Night One)

“Many, many years ago on a distant shore
Men did gather secretly beyond a hidden door
They travelled long and travelled far
Dark into the night
Yes, this is the place they've chosen
To build the metal site”

No, Metal Church was not one of the bands at Metal Aid 2021. But their lyrics, above, summed up this event for this photographer and reviewer.

Maybe it hasn’t been “many, many years”, but my last live metal show was 2019 Brutal Assault which is more than 22 months ago—certainly the longest drought for me in the past 40 years (when I went to my first concert). I know my situation is not unique.

Travelling long and travelling far was certainly the case as I flew about 6,000 miles combined between three flights and 20+ hours. When I showed my Covid-19 vaccine certificate to security at the door, the guy next to me said something like, “Wow, you came all the way from the USA for this?” I told him I am dedicated.

Capacity at Amager Bio was reduced from over 1,000 standing individuals to a few hundred sitting metalheads. Most would have preferred the former, but with three compression fractures in my spine, I was more than happy to sit for most of the four and a half hours of music.

Night one consisted of Svartsot, Heidra, Ethereal Kingdoms, and Lotan. Svartsot is the only band I had heard of before this mini festival was announced as Svartsot was scheduled to play at Copenhell 2020 and 2021, both of which were cancelled.

Lotan kicked things off. Again, I wasn’t very familiar with the first three bands and didn’t have high expectations based on minimal listenings beforehand, but all three exceeded expectations. I heard some grumblings about Lotan’s performance from some audience members, and maybe the long interval between shows for me reduced my critical ear, but I enjoyed their short set more than I thought I would.

Ethereal Kingdoms were next. They aren’t in my favorite genre of metal (think Nightwish or Within Temptation, although sometimes heavier with very occasional death metalish vocals/growls). Some sort of story seemed to be unfolding during their set. A bloody heart emerged near the end, but the front row was spared any sort of GWAR or Watain blood bath.

A neighbor at the show told me I would really like Heidra as they would feature more of the Scandinavian spirit. He was correct. Heidra was excellent in their presentation and delivery. Combine Amon Amarth, Finntroll, and Alestorm in your head and out pops something similar to Heidra.

Finishing off night one was Svartsot. Like the rest, Svartsot was way better live than I was anticipating. My seat was particularly amusing as I was right in front of Hans-Jørgen Martinus Hansen who alternated between Irish whistles, the mandolin, bagpipes, and his beer throughout the set.

The sound at Amager Bio was perfect. I wandered around the edges and sat in the front row, and the mix sounded great in all locations which isn’t normally the case—especially at indoor venues.

I do have high expectations for night two as seeing Artillery and Slægt were my main reasons for buying a ticket for Metal Aid. A few tickets remain for tonight, but they may be gone before showtime. The other bands tonight are Withering Surface and Demolizer.

Svartsot Splits With Drummer

Denmark's Svartsot has issued the following announcement about parting ways with the band's drummer:

"After 3½ brutal years behind the drum kit in Svartsot, Danni Lyse Jelsgaard, known affectionately on these pages as Jeff, has made the decision to go on to despoil pastures new. The decision was made mutually and amicably between Svartsot and Danni following the performance at Copenhell last Thursday.

"We’ve had many memorable experiences with Danni during his time in Svartsot and wish both him and his future projects the best of luck. Danni’s last performance with Svartsot will be at the Boarstream Open Air festival in Germany on July 21st 2012.

"Svartsot is presently contacting drummers to find a stand-in for the shows in Lyngby and Herning in September, and is considering the possibilities for finding a more permanent replacement."

Bilocate To Contribute Recipe To Metal Cookbook

Hani Al-Abbadi from the Jordanian dark oriental metal act Bilocate is going to share a recipe in the upcoming book "For Those About To Cook Pure Metal" by Bruce Moore. The following press release was issued about the book:

"For Those About To Cook Pure Metal is a collection of recipes, anecdotes and pictures from metal musicians from around the world. With contributions from numerous musical genres and countries, this is truly a multi-ethnic collector’s cookbook. Readers will be presented with recipes ranging from appetizers to full course meals and desserts.

"Pure Metal is more than a cookbook: it is also a fan collectible as it includes short informative biographies, high quality pictures of the artists (mostly in a kitchen setting)), pictures of the food and, in some cases, a quote about why the recipe or food is important to the contributor. Readers and fans will gain an insider’s view into the lifestyle and habits of the artists and bands; a sort of backstage pass or behind-the-scenes look into the lives of their favorite artists far from the stage and the studio."

Svartsot Reveals "Maledictus Eris" Artwork

Svartsot has issued the following announcement about "Maledictus Eris," the band's upcoming album:

"We're proud to be able to release the cover artwork and track list for the third Svartsot album; Maledictus Eris. As previously announced, the album recounts the tale of the Black Death's incursion into Danish history from 1349 to 1350. The album begins the tale from just prior to the plague's arrival through to when the first bout relinquished its grasp, and focuses on the way the epidemic affected the population – from victim to survivor. We have taken more inspiration from medieval music than on previous albums, and the feel of the album in general has taken a darker and more emotive turn on this recording.

"We are extremely satisfied with the way this album has turned out and hope that the fans – both old and new – will take kindly to it. But at the same time, we should also make clear that this album is somewhat different to its predecessors, and not for the worse as far as we're concerned.

"We have a series of live dates in Denmark lined up for after the release, and hope to be able to add more European dates to the list soon. News on dates and leading up to the release will be posted as soon as we have it."

The track listing is as follows: More...
