Background

On first listen, Nightwish seems to fall into the same genre as Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and The Gathering – female-fronted metal band with symphonic and gothic overtones. But any similarities end there. Singer Tarja Turunen, a trained opera singer, adds a new dimension to the band and separates Nightwish from other bands. Then there's the rest of the group, led by keyboardist and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Listen closely, and you'll hear a group that's equally influenced by opera, classical music, Euro-metal, early thrash and even Kate Bush. Nightwish formed as an acoustic-based band in, but quickly switched to a hard rock sound.

Anette Olzon Working On New Material

Nightwish vocalist Anette Olzon has issued the following statement about writing new material for a solo album:

"Good evening dear ones

"I am at my hotel room in Stockholm after a day full of creating songs in the studio together with Stefan and Johan. Its been really nice and also fun to sit down and making songs together. We have one song that is ready to record some vocals on tomorrow and then 2 more ideas that we will work more with. Now I just need to write some more lyrics to them, in my own private space.

"This will be so great and its so nice to have such great songwriters and musicians to help me with the songs. We work that way that we sit down by the piano and the guitar and just try melodies etc and then I write down lyrics and we try and test the structure of the song. Then Johan goes and puts drums, bass etc in the computer to get the music recorded for me to test-sing it. Then we work from there. It's so nice to create songs like this, I haven't done that since we started Alyson Avenue, so its been a while but I´ll soon get a hang of it again;=) And I really like the sound of it already!"

Nightwish Singer Comments on Michael Jackson

Nightwish vocalist Anette Olzon has posted the following blog on Michael Jackson:

"I`ve spent my evening in front of the TV and followed the memorial of Michael Jackson. I cried over and over again when the wonderful speakers talked and the great singers performed. The hardest part of it all were when Michaels daughter spoke about her father and how great he had been as her father and that she loved him so. That was almost to tough to watch...

"I have often thought about why the most caring people die first...Why is it that the meanest and most egocentrical people live long and just torment the people around them with their bitterness and hate?
And the caring and warmest people that give and think about others and live with their heart unprotected and outside the body leave so soon?

"I do believe that God needs the good people for better purposes or maybe even to save them from the pain and sorrows they need to go through being hurt and tormented by the hating and mean people of this world. By being misunderstood and questioned in their deeds to try and help and nurture others. Tormented with others jealousy, envy and hate.. More...

Volbeat To Tour With Nightwish

VOLBEAT unleashes their second U.S. album, "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood," March 17th on Mascot Records U.S.A. This new rock-a-billy metal masterpiece arrives on the tail end of their successful 2008 release "Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil." They will support this release with a month long tour with multi-platinum Finnish band Nightwish in May 2009. Tour dates are listed below.

The title "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood" refers to a story that connects seven of the thirteen (official) songs on the album: "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood," "Find That Soul," "Maybellene I Hofteholder," "Still Counting," "Back To Prom," "Light A Way and A Broken Man And The Dawn." It's a tale about a travelling band whose leader is a man that once got shot in the desert and left for dead. During the band's tour he went on a mission to find the mysterious killer that put seven bullets in his body. While travelling from city to city the band ends up in a small town called Ten House City performing for just a handful of people in the local bar. The songs offer observations of the people in the rundown venue, made by the bandleader. This storyline will continue to be a connecting theme and developed as VOLBEAT writes future albums.

Here are the latest Volbeat tour dates in support of Nightwish: More...

Anette Olzon Walked Off Due To Vocal Problems

ANETTE OLZON sent a press release to Brazilian media where she clarified the reasons behind her sudden "collapse," which caused her to leave the stage in the middle of the NIGHTWISH show in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on November 10th 2008.

OLZON stated that the smoke on stage got on her vocal chords to make her lose her voice. She was trying to sing until she reached the point she couldn't do it anymore and therefore was "forced" to leave the stage.

NIGHTWISH has always had a very good and close relation to their fans in Brazil and the thought of disappointing the fans was too great for Anette. The band tried to buy some time for Anette to regain her voice back but it didn't. NIGHTWISH ended up playing two more songs after Anette left the stage but were forced to stop the show after that.

After the show, people stayed in the venue to get some kind of explanation to what happened. After a while, promoter Eric de Haas from Dynamo Productions came on stage to tell the fans that the concert was over and Nightwish was already back on their hotel.

It is reported that the next show NIGHTWISH did the next day in the capital of Brazil (BRASILIA) went well and the band the song THE POET AND THE PENDULUM on their setlist.

Soon afterward, Olzen had an interview with MTV Brazil, which you can watch below. More...
