On first listen, Nightwish seems to fall into the same genre as Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and The Gathering – female-fronted metal band with symphonic and gothic overtones. But any similarities end there. Singer Tarja Turunen, a trained opera singer, adds a new dimension to the band and separates Nightwish from other bands. Then there's the rest of the group, led by keyboardist and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Listen closely, and you'll hear a group that's equally influenced by opera, classical music, Euro-metal, early thrash and even Kate Bush. Nightwish formed as an acoustic-based band in, but quickly switched to a hard rock sound.

Nightwish is currently working on a new album along with producer Tero “TeeCee” Kinnunen. The yet-untitled creation will be the first Nightwish studio record to feature Dutch vocalist Floor Jansen.
Longtime drummer Jukka Nevalainen will also sit out on the recording sessions due to health issues; while Kai Hahto (Wintersun, Swallow The Sun) will replace him. The album is set for a release in the Spring of 2015 via Nuclear Blast.
Today the band has put up a fourth album trailer, available below. The previously posted third clip is available at this location.
Commented drummer Jukka Nevalainen on the first actual band rehearsal: “You have to remember that the last time we played together was about 11 months ago. It’s been quite a while. So, all things considered out initial stabs were pretty OK.”
Added guitarist Emppu Vuorinen: “You start to get into the songs when you rehearse them. We played a heavier tune, and it did get me moshing a bit. I don’t know if it has something to do with age – but the need to show off has diminished even more. It’s more like you want to do justice to the song and not strut your stuff.” More...

Nightwish is currently working on a new album, and the yet-untitled creation will be the band's first studio record to feature Dutch vocalist Floor Jansen. It’s currently set for a release in Spring 2015 via Nuclear Blast.
Today the band has put up the third album trailer, available below, and main composer Tuomas Holopainen comments:
“When I come up with a subject for the song, I always see it as a short movie. Each song is like a soundtrack for that movie in my head… it takes at least 12-18 months to write an album.” More...
While Nightwish is currently working on an upcoming new studio album, fans can enjoy a series of five special clips, with impressions taken from the "Imaginaerum" world-tour. Today marks the start with a clip for "Planet Hell," which can be seen below.
Following the "Imaginaerum" album (reviewed here), Nightwish is gearing up to drop a new album through Nuclear Blast next year. You can see a making-of video covering the album's creation at this location.
In the midst of writing a new album, Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish announced that drummer Jukka Nevalainen is forced to step down and take a break from music activities due to ongoing health concerns. It seems for many years, Nevalainen has been suffering from insomnia. His replacement for the upcoming follow up to "Imaginaerum" will be Wintersun/Swallow the Sun drummer Kai Hahto.
Nevalainen posted a statement and a video (shown below):
"How to begin telling something that you wouldn’t want to have to tell, although you know that the decision you made is the only (at least the only right) one you could make at the moment? I face this dilemma now, and will do my best to find the right words.
"For a number of years, I have suffered from occasional but very difficult insomnia, something that has been my unwanted companion during many of our tours, too. I’ve done my best to try to control it or at least to cope with it. Still, we don’t even really know why we need sleep, so unfortunately there’s not much information available on why some of us suffer from sleeplessness. There is no 100% cure for the problem.
"During the last month, it has become evident for me that due to my insomnia, I can’t fulfill my duties as a musician in the way that I’d want and with the precision that the music deserves. Thus I have decided to step aside from my duties as the drummer of Nightwish during the recording of the forthcoming album and the subsequent tour. I will still be involved in managing the day-to-day affairs of the band, but the dearest and the most important thing, playing, is, for the time being, not possible. Time will tell what the future holds.
"On a personal level, my decision obviously feels indescribably sad. Fortunately, looking at it with some distance, it is “just” part of the constant, inevitable ebb and flow of life. The sad things are part of it as well as the beautiful, unforgettable experiences and adventures that I’ve already had the pleasure to experience in spades. Surely, there will still be many adventures ahead, too. More...
Finland-based symphonic metal act Nightwish is proud to announce a newly-inked North American deal for the U.S. and Canada via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.
The band’s as-yet-untitled eighth studio album will be the first to feature new Dutch vocalist Floor Jansen, who has toured with the band since October 2012. The album will follow previous release "Imaginaerum" (reviewed here).
Expanding the territory of Nightwish’s initial European collaboration with Nuclear Blast‘s HQ in Germany since 2004’s "Once" album, NBE President and A&R Chief Monte Conner looks forward to the growth of the band’s new line-up and states:
"It was a pleasure to work with Nightwish at my former label, but now in my new capacity at NBE, I will be more directly involved with the band than ever before. I would like to thank Nightwish and their management for their continued faith in and loyalty to me. I am particularly excited at the prospect of hearing Floor Jansen’s debut studio recording with the band. Her performance on last year’s live release Showtime, Storytime completely blew me away and proved why she is the PERFECT singer for Nightwish."
Nighwish’s long-time co-manager Ewo Pohjola of King Foo Entertainment adds the following: "Having Monte Conner now back with Nightwish in North America makes us all really happy. And with Nuclear Blast we have always felt at home since Day One.”
Recordings of the new Nightwish material are slated begin this summer and the band members have already spent time in the wilderness of Hattula, Finland working on new song demos with producer Tero “TeeCee” Kinnumen.
“It’s proven to be a very effective arrangement,” states song composer & keyboard player Tuomas Holopainen. “We have our peace here, in the middle of nature. We can concentrate 24/7.”
“There’s stuff that sounds excellent already and stuff that clearly needs some work still,” adds bassist & vocalist Marco Hietala. “We have such a strong belief in the end result that we know if will work like alchemy: Scheiße [shit] will turn to gold.” More...
Deep in the Finnish forest, in the town of Hattula, Nightwish is tucked away from the distractions of humanity writing the follow up to "Imaginaerum" (see review here). The album will mark the first release for new vocalist Floor Jansen (ReVamp/ex-After Forever), who joined Nightwish in 2013 during the last North American tour when Anette Olson split with the band.
The video features composer/keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen and vocalist/bassist Marco Hietala speaking about the writing process. Check it out here:

So far the bands’ mastermind, keyboardist and visionary composer Tuomas Holopainen and sound engineer Tero 'TeeCee' Kinnunen recorded demo version of 12 songs."
Commented Tuomas Holopainen: “From the moment I start writing the song, I have the story in my head. I have a really clear vision how the songs should sound like at this point. Of course they will chance after band rehearsals and arranging. And they should change!” More...

The organizers of the Bloodstock Festival are excited to announce four more bands to the 2014 bill.
East Coast metal/hardcore legends Biohazard join the Ronnie James Dio stage line up. The band is hard at work on a brand new album due for release this year via Nuclear Blast Records. Band leader Billy Graziadei comments: "We've watched some awesome Bloodstock line-ups over the past few years and we're very psyched to be part of this one! See you in da pit!”
Fronted by current Nightwish vocalist, Floor Jansen, Revamp also steps up for a main stage slot. Floor successfully juggles her commitments to both bands and is taking Revamp on the road across the US this Spring with Iced Earth and Sabaton. About the Bloodstock slot, Floor comments “Revamp is thrilled to play at Bloodstock this summer! It’s a great festival with a strong metal heart in a metal-loving country for which we have nothing but great memories. We can't wait to rock the British crowd again!”
Ground-breaking Israeli progressive metallers, Orphaned Land also join the bill. “I could never imagine in my wildest imagination that an Israeli band would be followed by thousands of Muslim fans from around the world,” commented frontman Kobi Farhi, but that is exactly what has happened. Jansen provides lead vocals on the upcoming first single and promotional video. The release date for both single and the video is planned for March 2014. The recordings are currently taking place in East Sound Studios in Helsinki, Finland. Jansen joins the cast that already includes Epica singer Simone Simons and the reunion of the early Stratovarius. The European Tour will coincide with the release of the album. More details on the album release date, live lineup and dates will be revealed later.
Timo Tolkki commented: “I am right now recording probably the best vocalist I have worked with in my whole career. This has been a jaw dropping experience and I thought I have already seen it all. Floor has proven me wrong. For example in the 10 minute title track of the album, she delivers in my opinion the best vocals of her career so far. This song is probably the biggest sounding of my whole career and Floor simply makes it an astonishing, almost breathtaking experience! We are both surprised of how amazing this has turned out to be and both very happy to hear how amazing it sounds.” More...

Finnish symphonic metal band has officially named Floor Jansen (ReVamp) permanent vocalist of the band. In addition, Troy Donockley - the purveyor of uilleann pipes on the latest tour - has now been made an official full time member. Jansen was the fill in vocalist following the departure of Anette Olzon just weeks into the band's North American tour with Kamelot in the Fall of 2012.
The statement from the band reads:
"Ms. Floor Jansen is a keeper.
"Also, we will be a six-piece band from now on, as Mr. Troy Donockley (uilleann pipes, low whistles, vocals) will become a full-time member of NIGHTWISH.
"Originally we were going to wait until 2014 to make a decision about the future line-up of the band, but the past year has clearly shown us that Floor and Troy are perfect matching pieces to our puzzle, and we are really grateful of the bond that has grown between all of us. We love you guys.
"Tuomas, Marco, Jukka, Emppu"
Floor Jansen commented: "Words cannot describe what I feel! This union is beyond everything and I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to continue this amazing journey with my new brothers! Once I had a dream…and this is it!!!"
Troy Donockley added: "`Imaginaerum World Tour´was a revelation to me and in that time, I became aware of a growing unity and then, finally, a transcendence of all the usual nonsense that affects bands. A beautiful process. And since the idea, the musical dream that is Nightwish has been a part of me since before I was born, I am delighted to officially sail into uncharted waters with my brothers and sister. Wondrous scenes Ahoy! "
