On first listen, Nightwish seems to fall into the same genre as Evanescence, Lacuna Coil and The Gathering – female-fronted metal band with symphonic and gothic overtones. But any similarities end there. Singer Tarja Turunen, a trained opera singer, adds a new dimension to the band and separates Nightwish from other bands. Then there's the rest of the group, led by keyboardist and primary songwriter Tuomas Holopainen. Listen closely, and you'll hear a group that's equally influenced by opera, classical music, Euro-metal, early thrash and even Kate Bush. Nightwish formed as an acoustic-based band in, but quickly switched to a hard rock sound.

Insect Named After Tuomas Holopainen

Conservation biologist Jukka Salmela of Metsähallitus Parks & Wildlife Finland recently discovered a new insect species in his home country, and while remembering Tuomas Holopainen's love for nature, he decided to name it "Sciophila holopaineni" after Nightwish's keyboardist and songwriter.

After the release of the band's latest album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" in 2015 (featuring a guest spot by biologist Richard Dawkins), Holopainen has been known as person being highly interested in evolution and the diversity of nature.

"I am very, very touched. This is the highest honour a nature nerd like me can receive,” Tuomas Holopainen commented after being contacted by Salmela, who asked for permission to name the insect after him. So far, this particular fungus gnat has only been spotted in eastern Lapland, Finland, and lives in shadowy environments.

After releasing the double-DVD "Vehicle Of Spirit," Nightwish is currently taking a year off to find inspiration and write new songs - stay tuned for new material in 2018! More...

On December 9th, the symphonic metal visionaries are set to release their new live milestone "Vehicle Of Spirit," featuring not only two full concerts, but also plenty of bonus material. Today, they unveil a second appetizer with live hymn "Alpenglow."

Nightwish issued this statement: "I would say the main part of the DVD are those two shows, both Wembley and Tampere. Wembley is mentioned first due to its recognizability and legendary status. I remember the show being very special, both a goal achieved, and a starting point.

"The crowd was heartwarming. The presence of Richard Dawkins on stage was just mind-blowing. The overall experience was a once-in-a-lifetime thrill ride! The show in Ratina Stadion, Tampere, was a home crowd specialty (for 4/6th of the band) with the biggest stage production we've ever had. A lovely atmosphere throughout the concert, with many same faces in the front row as there were 15 years ago. Heartfelt." More...

Nightwish To Release "Vehicle Of Spirit" DVD

After touring for a year and a half throughout almost every corner of the world and leaving fans of all nationalities breathless, the time has come for Nightwish to immortalize the "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" tour on DVD. Therefore, the symphonic metal visionaries are set to release the new live milestone "Vehicle Of Spirit" on November 4th, featuring not only two full concerts, but also plenty of bonus material.

"The title ‘Vehicle Of Spirit’ came from a friend of Troy's, who after seeing our show a few years ago defined Nightwish as 'A vehicle of spirit that defies category'. That beautiful description has followed us ever since, and felt like a perfect match as the DVD title," states keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen.

Sold out arenas and spectacular shows with never before seen pyro effects, wind machines, video screens and of course Nightwish's incomparable melodies are the elements that made their latest tour so unique. Special highlights for the band have been two particular shows though:

The one in London, where they not only played their hymns such as "Élan" and the majestic "The Greatest Show On Earth" to more than 12,000 fans, but also welcomed the world famous scientist Richard Dawkins live on stage with the band. Richard Dawkins´ works had a massive impact on the thematical orientation of the latest studio album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful." Finland's Tampere show however was a home run for the band and Nightwish had never before had such an immense stage production with them.

"I would say the main part of the DVD are those two shows, both Wembley and Tampere. Wembley is mentioned first due to its recognizably and legendary status. I remember the show being very special, both a goal achieved, and a starting point. The crowd was heartwarming. The presence of Richard Dawkins on stage was just mind-blowing. The overall experience was a once-in-a-lifetime thrill ride! The show in Ratina Stadion, Tampere, was a home crowd specialty (for 4/6th of the band) with the biggest stage production we've ever had. Metal Must Evolve

My biggest issue with metal in the 2010s is that in contrast to the past three decades, there's just a lack of creativity. Newer metalcore is being increasingly influenced by nu-metal and post-hardcore as the new musicians who are in their 20s and 30s are now playing music that's entirely an amalgam of what they grew up with as teens rather than creating anything new.

Blackgaze was novel for the first few years but now feels like the light beer version of black metal at this point that doesn't have the same edge that metal is supposed to have. I'm not sure if I want black metal to have a kinder, gentler, dare I say, “cuddlier” face when compared to the antisocial behavior that defined the second wave. When I hear a band like Alcest or Deafheaven, I don't feel like these are maniacs with serious mental issues precisely because it sounds way too calculated and professional for my aging ears.

Djent is nice but often feels too monotonous to really do justice to how technical it is. For, “progressive metal” the songwriting lacks the same level of unexpected changes in direction that make progressive rock acts like Rush and Yes so appealing. Yeah, Djent is heavy but it's also often predicable when unconventional songwriting is half of what separates metal and makes it so special and unique. Blackened sludge on the othe rhand is only going to appeal to people who want extremely raw production... who will never be great enough in number to establish a trend rather than a fad. More...

Avantasia Recruits Marco Hietala For New Album

What do Geoff Tate, Dee Snider, Michael Kiske, Robert Mason, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Ronnie Atkins, Olli Hartmann and me have in common with Marco Hietala of Nightwish?

They'll all be on the new Avantasia album "Ghostlights" due out on January 29, 2016! Tobias Sammet had this to say about the latest addition to the album's lineup:

"About Marco: It was August 1997 and we were in Helsinki to mix the 'Vain Glory Opera' album of Edguy when someone played the band Tarot to me. That great band seemed to be some sort of a legend in Finland (in Germany Tarot were not really known at the time). A few years later a band called Nightwish had appeared on the map and were about to take the European metal world upside down. Edguy played a festival in England with Saxon and amongst others: Nightwish!

"I remember even though they had a great female vocalist how much I loved the rendition of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Crazy Train' that they did - if I remember correctly - which was sung by their bass player. You know, a lot of bass players are bass players because they wanna be in a band too; and there's only so much damage you can do to the sound of a band with just a bass. Sometimes they're only in the band because they talk enough to organize things or they have a day job to finance the first demo recordings, nice stage clothes, or sun glasses, but at the end of the day, most of them aren't taken seriously because… well, because they're bass players. :) And they're always suspicious... ;) More...

Nightwish Shudders Before The Beautiful

In anticipation of forthcoming studio album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful," due out on March 27th (EU), 30th (UK) and 31st (US), Finland-based symphonic metal band Nightwish now reveals the album opener "Shudder Before The Beautiful."

"Shudder Before The Beautiful" is premiered today via Finland’s Helsingin Sanomat - listen in at this location. Tuomas Holopainen comments:

"We wanted to present our upcoming album's opening track 'Shudder Before The Beautiful' for everyone to listen to before the album's release in cooperation with the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. Bringing together the most trustworthy Finnish media with a song about universal awe was a match made in heaven in its uniqueness.

"The core of 'Shudder Before The Beautiful' lies in moments such as gazing at The Milky Way on a cold winter's night, seeing a photo of our Planet Earth, 'a pale blue dot' taken by Voyager 1 as a tiny oasis in the unfathomable vastness of space, or when listening to music which momentarily takes away all woe and time.

"And sharing those moments with people you love.”

Amorphis To Enter Studio, New Album This September

Finnish metal act Amorphis started the year off by demoing new songs for their upcoming 12th studio album, which is tarted for release in September. The band will start pre-production this month in Helsinki with producer Jens Bogren. The album recordings will begin in April at Bogren's Fascination Street Studio in Stockholm.

The lyrics are written by Amorphis' spiritual mentor Pekka Kainulainen: "Like Kalevala, they are descriptions of natural phenomena, seasons and the human mind. Recccuring situations where hope and uncertainty alternate. Attempting to gain advice from higher powers. The poems do not form a complete story per se, but they are drawn together by a certain theme. We live under a red cloud and once again, time weighs us.”

The new album will be released in September when Amorphis will embark on a world tour, starting from their native Finland. Amorphis will be touring Europe with Nightwish at the end of the year.

This past December, Amorphis completed a successful Central European "Retro" tour where the band played their legendary "Tales From The Thousand Lakes" album in its entirety to celebrate the 20th anniversary of said record. As a special treat for the fans, Amorphis also played songs from their debut album, which they haven't played in more than two decades. In Germany the media praised the tour of its authencity and its "time travel to 20 years ago" aspect.

"The tour set pays homage to the TFTTL album and did not include a single song released after 1995. It was great to see how boldly Tales... functions as a whole.”

Upcoming confirmed live dates are as follows:

Amorphis Summer Festivals in Finland:

06.06.2015 Tampere – Radio City South Park
27.06.2015 Helsinki – Tuska Open Air
03.07.2015 Turku – Ruisrock
17-19.07.2015 Joensuu – Ilosaarirock More...
