Puscifer To Release New Album In February

Puscifer, the multi-dimensional band featuring Maynard James Keenan, Mat Mitchell and Carina Round releases "Normal Isn’t," their first new album in over five years, on February 6th via Puscifer Entertainment/Alchemy Recordings/BMG. The record channels the post-punk influences that shaped the members’ early musical experiences while pushing into darker, more guitar-driven territory.

"We’re definitely leaning into our early influences," Keenan shares. "It’s the place where goth meets punk. It’s where I came from."

The band previews the 11-song collection with the release of “Self Evident” and its accompanying video filmed during a special August performance at Exchange L.A., where the group previewed the album in full for an intimate crowd of fans. More...

Sessanta's Berkeley Show

Sessanta - A 60th Birthday Celebration for Maynard James Keenan, live in Berkeley, California 4/21/24

Earlier this week at Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, A Perfect Circle, Primus, and Puscifer celebrated Maynard James Keenan’s 60th birthday. Labeled “Sessanta” (and for those of you who understand Spanish even less than I, “sesenta” means sixty in Spanish), the birthday celebration tour of seven shows announced in September 2023 became such a buzz that the festivities tripled into 21 concerts, soon to be ending on May 4.

Despite having grown up less than 18 miles from the Greek Theatre (and providing occasional tours of Berkeley for Japanese tourists in the early 1990s), this was my first time at the venue. The top portion of the venue has been redone for 2024 (this was the first show of the year), fixing lawn issues, and allowing for an even more spectacular view of the area including The Campanile and, on this clear day, San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. Les Claypool commented on the stunning views that he partook of earlier in the day during one of the Primus sets. Even though I had my camera ready to capture the scene, I was informed that I couldn’t take photos, despite the fact that I had a photo pass, and the show wasn’t even going to begin for over an hour. Oh well.

Sessanta - A 60th Birthday Celebration for Maynard James Keenan a perfect circle

Every night of the tour features unique posters and other merch for the bands individually and for Sessanta collectively. The lines for merch were so long, though, that like several shows I’ve seen over the past few years, you either had to choose between obtaining merch or seeing the show. I really don’t understand those that opt for the former.

Sessanta - A 60th Birthday Celebration for Maynard James Keenan

As the promotion material promised, “All 3 Bands Onstage At The Same Time” really took place, not just once but throughout the evening, even if some of the members weren’t actively playing or singing. Lounges were set up in the corners of the platformed stage where the non-performing musicians frequently hung out or came and went. Very unusual and cool. To get to these birthday lounges one could either take the stairs or opt for the stairs chair. As one who recently finished The Sopranos, I laughed out loud the first time Maynard took the “Livia Soprano” route.

At Tool shows I’ve been to, Maynard did not interact with the audience. In fact, I could barely see him at all at one of them. This evening was very different. Not only was Maynard engaged with the audience but Les Claypool was even more interactive than normal. During “My Name Is Mud” Les paused and said something like, “I just realized I came up with that riff in the Greek Theatre’s Green Room thirty-something years ago.”

While performing “Follow the Fool”, Les appeared to be singing to the guy who suddenly appeared next to me with his phone out to take pictures/video. Before the song had even finished, security had taken the intoxicated amateur photographer out of the venue.

Unfortunately, my photos are very limited due to the “no photo” policy which applied to everyone, including those of us with photo passes. The only portion of the show we could shoot was the final song, and I couldn’t even see Les during that brief period of time.

Maynard James Keenan Announces Book Tour

Maynard James Keenan, front man of A Perfect Circle, Puscifer and Tool, embarks on a book tour this fall to accompany the release of his authorized biography, "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things," with the first two dates confirmed for November 9th at Nashville’s City Winery and November 16th at Thalia Hall in Chicago.

The special evening also includes Keenan reading passages from "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" with a backdrop of never before seen photos and videos, as well as taking questions from the audience in what will be a rare moment of direct interaction between the elusive musician and the fans of his projects.

Maynard James Keenan Autobiography Announced

Last October, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Maynard James Keenan, accomplished winemaker and frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, let on that he was working with writer/editor and longtime friend Sarah Jensen on an authorized biography.

Until now, Keenan’s fans have had access to only an abridged version of his story. That all will change with the release of "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" (Nov. 8, 2016, Backbeat Books, $29.99).

As Keenan explained to Rolling Stone, “There's always that perception that whatever you've done that's the largest media-friendly thing in your life, where the world came to know of you, there's a perception that there was no life before, and that you were nothing before. There's a lot of stuff that went on in my life that nobody really knows about. So I feel like this is the chance to show the patterns, tell a story.”

Jensen, who has known Keenan for three decades, rolls out that untold story chronicling his journey from his Midwest childhood to his years in the Army to his time in art school, from his stint at a Boston pet shop to his place in the international spotlight and his influence on the disparate fields of contemporary music and regional winemaking.

"A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" presents the outtakes, the scenes of disappointment and triumph, and the events that led him to take one step after the next, to change direction, to explore sometimes surprising opportunities. The book also features a foreword by Alex Grey, an American artist and longtime friend of Keenan. More...

Down Cancels European Festival Shows

The organisers of Hellfest in France have announced that Down, the band led by former Pantera frontman, Phil Anselmo, have pulled out of this year's edition of the festival and that Puscifer will take their place. They also claim that the band has scrapped plans to tour Europe altogether, following the well publicised drunken remarks from Anselmo at Dimebash this year. A letter sent to the organisers from the vocalist, which was published by the festival's admins earlier, reads as follows:

"My awful mistake has taken a toll on my reputation, and justly so. However, I must point out, you damned-well know me better than this drunken incident could ever describe. Hellfest is my heart.

"And my embarrassment is tremendous, because I only have love for people all over this skirmishing earth. So my brother, it fucking rips my heart into further pieces to let you know, I don't think I should do any Euro festivals this year.

"So please I beg you, give me this time to get my brain clear, and to come back (if you will have me back) next year my brother, I implore you."

Puscifer Announces North American Tour

Puscifer recently announced new album "Money Shot" will drop October 30 via Puscifer Entertainment, and now the will also be returning to the road, kicking off a six-week outing on November 1 at the Monster Mash Festival in Phoenix.

“As is the Modus Operandi of Puscifer, there will be a whole new show to accompany the Money Shot release. We’ve been leaving a few clues here and there as to what it may entail,” said Maynard James Keenan. “As usual, we prefer to Show rather than Tell. Odds are if you’ve been a fan of the diverse nature of our performances in the past, you’ll want to go ahead and place those bets.”

It’s no surprise that Keenan choose to debut the electro rock band-meets-comedy troupe on a Las Vegas stage (Puscifer’s first shows were at The Pearl Theatre in the Palms Casino). The live line-up for the Money Shot tour includes Keenan, Mat Mitchell, Carina Round, Jeff Friedl, Mahsa Zargaran and the newest addition, Paul Barker (Ministry, Lead Into Gold). More...

Puscifer Unloading The "Money Shot"

Puscifer, the Arizona-based outfit helmed by Maynard James Keenan, returns with the electro-rock band’s third full-length album, "Money Shot," due out on October 30 via Puscifer Entertainment. Check out a video for new track “Grand Canyon” below.

“It’s extremely satisfying to witness simple conversations and ideas transform into completed sonic landscapes. And to have these stories go above and beyond the initial ideas makes my grumpy heart swell three sizes,” said band ringleader, Maynard James Keenan. Puscifer celebrates the concept of creativity, invoking the audience “to create something with every breath drawn.” That sentiment takes center stage as "Money Shot" unfolds over its 10 songs.

"Money Shot" was produced by Mat Mitchell and Keenan with some additional awesome sauce coming from the one of a kind, bad ass Carina Round. “It’s such a pleasure to work on music with so many creative individuals. The intermix of influences and ideas made for an album I’m really proud of,” added Mitchell. Additional participants include Carina Round, Juliette Commagere, Devo Keenan, Tim Alexander, Jon Theodore, Jeff Friedl and Matt McJunkins, with Adam Rothlein directing the “Grand Canyon” video. "N" Is For Nashville, A Puscifer Experience

Puscifer is one of the most difficult bands to describe, given the disconnect between their outward appearance and the substance of their songs. Yet, to anyone familiar with the work of A Perfect Circle and Tool, just the buzz-phrase of "It's a Maynard James Keenan band" does the trick. The band's approach is almost exclusionary in that their promo photos and stage presentation are mostly unrelated, which deters casual listeners but intrigues those who demand that music be a full-on experience. Finding out what that Puscifer experience was all about was my goal when they stopped in Nashville, TN on the night of February 28th. More...

Trailer For Keenan's "Blood Into Wine" Now Online

A trailer for “Blood Into Wine,” the widely anticipated documentary that shares the story of Tool/A Perfect Circle/Puscifer front man Maynard James Keenan and his vineyard partner Eric Glomski and their quest to bring the wine industry to Arizona’s Verde Valley is now available as a high resolution download and streaming at www.twinklecashcompany.com.

Keenan’s various musical entities (Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle) have sold over 10 million records in the US alone while the man himself has revealed little of his personal life. “Blood Into Wine” gives unprecedented insight into Keenan’s world and his motivations for taking on the arduous task of bringing winemaking to the region’s unforgiving landscape and how winemaking fits into Keenan’s creative trajectory.

The film is being co-directed by Ryan Page and Christopher Pomerenke (the filmmakers behind critically acclaimed documentaries "Moog" and "The Heart Is A Drum Machine") and is set to wrap production in September with a limited theatrical release in February and March 2010. With the striking setting playing such an integral role in the shaping of this story, Page and Pomerenke elected to use a Red One camera (one of the highest quality digital cinema cameras available). The film is being shot by Cary Truelick, edited by Rob Beadle, and produced by Ryan Page, Christopher Pomerenke, Chris McDaniel, and Jason Stall.

An accompanying soundtrack with original material from Keenan will accompany the release of the documentary with more details to be announced soon.
