Last October, in an interview with Rolling Stone, Maynard James Keenan, accomplished winemaker and frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, let on that he was working with writer/editor and longtime friend Sarah Jensen on an authorized biography.

Until now, Keenan’s fans have had access to only an abridged version of his story. That all will change with the release of "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" (Nov. 8, 2016, Backbeat Books, $29.99).

As Keenan explained to Rolling Stone, “There's always that perception that whatever you've done that's the largest media-friendly thing in your life, where the world came to know of you, there's a perception that there was no life before, and that you were nothing before. There's a lot of stuff that went on in my life that nobody really knows about. So I feel like this is the chance to show the patterns, tell a story.”

Jensen, who has known Keenan for three decades, rolls out that untold story chronicling his journey from his Midwest childhood to his years in the Army to his time in art school, from his stint at a Boston pet shop to his place in the international spotlight and his influence on the disparate fields of contemporary music and regional winemaking.

"A Perfect Union of Contrary Things" presents the outtakes, the scenes of disappointment and triumph, and the events that led him to take one step after the next, to change direction, to explore sometimes surprising opportunities. The book also features a foreword by Alex Grey, an American artist and longtime friend of Keenan.

Usually I'd be interested in this, but... I feel like Tool's music (and to a lesser extent his other groups) actually benefits from that slight air of mystery around his lyrics. It's delving into them to find what I believe he is truly talking about that has been one of my favourite parts of his music. Knowing the man too well, every little detail of his life and so on... that might actually take something away from the experience of his music.

Not sure I want this.

I understand where you're coming from psythe...the whole 'Santa Clause isn't real effect.' Not quite as magical anymore; but, think of it this way...

We've had over 2 decades to digest Tool (from their first EP). Like everything in life, it has affected me, shaped me in a way. I latched on to what I wanted and made it my own.

That time has passed (at least for me) and I can now simply appreciate Tool, APC, Puscifer, Maynard, this book for what it is without clouding my judgment or perception. As a true fan of all his work, I want this book to be a success for MJK. To let him know I'm out here, still listening, still reading, still wanting more.

I will be purchasing.

Well said Cozen, and knowing Maynard, this will not be a deep dive into the details of his personal life. More like a high altitude overview.
