Mike Portnoy Comments On Recording w/ A7X
Yesterday, Avenged Sevenfold--whose drummer James "the Rev" Sullivan tragically passed away in December 2009--announced on their website that they are recording their new album with Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy. Avenged Sevenfold said in part: "We asked Jimmy's all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that's what Jim would have wanted. It's comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev's abilities."
Mike Portnoy today (2/18/09) issued this statement:
"Even under normal circumstances, I would've been happy to help the guys out in any way I could as I think Avenged Sevenfold are a great band...but under these incredibly sad and tragic circumstances, I must say I am truly honored to have been asked to play with them and I didn't even have to think twice about saying ‘yes.’
"These guys are a true family and it is an incredibly emotional experience to be here with them for the first time without their lost brother. But they have welcomed me into the family with open arms and there's a real excitement to make the record they had set out to make.
"I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy's memory and am remaining as true as possible to the drum parts that he wrote for the songs and the record he wanted to make.
"I want their fans to realize that I'm not trying to step into or fill The Rev's shoes...I'm just merely lacing 'em up for him!"
Avenged Sevenfold Enters The Studio
Avenged Sevenfold has issued the following update about entering the recording studio with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater:
"I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it's our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy's all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev's abilities.
"Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy."
Avenged Sevenfold drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan passed away late last year, found dead in his home on December 28, 2009.

Dream Theater To Record Song For God Of War 3
Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater has issued the following announcement about the band recording an instrumental track for the upcoming God of War 3 video game soundtrack:
"As 2009 is finally winding down and no DT plans have been made public yet for 2010, I'd like to just give a quick rundown of what we have planned to prevent any rumors or speculation that I'm starting to see brew....
"As you know, after Thanksgiving we will be heading down to New Zealand for the very first time and then over to Australia (with special guests Pain Of Salvation)...and then we will return home to our families for the holidays and New Year...
"In an unexpected move, we will then enter the studio right after New Year's to write and record a brand new instrumental track for inclusion on the upcoming God Of War 3 soundtrack. This will mark the first time in the band's career we have written and recorded an exclusive track for an outside project. Roadrunner invited us to participate and we decided we were up for the challenge! More...
Opeth Issues Tour Recap
Front man Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth has issued the following recap of their European Progressive Nation tour alongside Dream Theater and Unexpect:
"Yes, time for another update! Aren't you excited!!!??? Meh...
"I just got back home from Tel Aviv/Israel where we had an amazing show! Loved it! We played a bit funky (not as in swinging, more as in a bit ‘shit’) but it was alright. Crowd was AWESOME! Loud, big and steaming HOT! On top of things, downing a few cold beers on the beach around midnight in 22 degrees celcius is NOT bad, when it's November, and you're...Swedish. Yuri (promotor) took great care of us, I even had red roses in my room and a little plate of fruit + 2 showers. It was extravagant, I felt like a fatter, uglier and less talented Mariah Carey.
"Anyways, we also just recently finished the Progressive nation Euro tour with our buddies Dream theater, Bigelf and Unexpect. It was a great nice tour and we had many good shows. I can't say which one was the best, but it was certainly amazing to play Hovet in our hometown. It's where we all used to go and see metal shows in the 80's. Love that place, but I admit, when we're up there I was feeling like....’OK, whatever’. It was like any stage really. Wembley arena was cool too. Spektrum in Oslo, that place in Rome. Ahoy in Rotterdam....several kickass venues and several kickass crowds. More...
Mike Portnoy Answers Fan Questions
Roadrunner Records has posted a new interview online with Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater answering fan questions. Excerpts from the Q & A follow:
FROM RODRIGO GUERRERO SALAZAR, MEXICO CITY: Would you ever collaborate with Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson?
I’m hoping to. It’s been talked about for years now - a collaboration between him, myself and Mikael Akerfeldt. It’s just been a matter of timing and I think all three of us are hesitant of the anticipation that has now surrounded this project, all three of us feel that we possibly can’t live up to it. I think we all wish we’d kept our mouths shut and we’d just quietly gone away and done it, and surprised everybody with it. That being said, I personally would prioritise it in my schedule and I even told both those guys that I’m ready, willing and able to somehow make it happen in 2010 if possible. I would love to do it.
FROM DAVID FITCH, BRAMBLETON, VIRGINIA: Is there any chance you will be putting out a Progressive Nation DVD?
I would have liked to have, but no, it’s not on the cards. This album and tour cycle will be the first without a DVD, but I think that’s ok, I hate always doing the same pattern or the same formula.More...
