Background

Trivium was formed in 2000 in Altamonte Springs Florida - Travis Smith, Matt Heafy and two other band mates met at Travis's house to learn and cover "For Whom the Bell Tolls" for his high school's Battle of the Bands competition. Even though they were inexperienced, they quickly formulated a band - the aggression of Trivium was popular among the high school crowd. Shortly after the Battle of the Bands show Trivium performed in a local music contest, Indiefest, taking 2nd place overall. After a couple local party gigs, Trivium's original singer left the band.

It was decided that Matt would take on the lead vocal duties as well as being the lead & rhythm guitarist and a search was underway for a rhythm guitarist. An old band mate of Travis', Brent Young earned the spot. With the new line up, Trivium played several garage gigs, party gigs, small clubs, and high school level competitions, gaining experience and writing more original songs. Soon, Trivium headed into a local studio to record a three-song demo.

Brent eventually moved to bass after Trivium's bassist departed.

Trivium's fan base began to grow, the band began to receive more local buzz and awards. Carrying a full set of originals, Trivium tore up club after club during the summer, opened for national acts - placed 1st for Battle of the Bands in high school and Matt was awarded The Best Metal Guitarist Award for 2002 presented by The Orlando Metal Awards.

Trivium recorded four more originals for their next demo. After this demo was recorded the musical direction of the band changed to something that the band and critics categorize as Melodic Death Metalcore. After one more 7-song demo EP, LifeForce records from Germany signed the band in May of 2003 and the band released 'Ember To Inferno' before adding second guitarist Corey Beaulieu and joining Roadrunner in April 2004.

Trivium Bass Player Checks In From The Road

Trivium bass player Paolo Gregoletto has issued the following statement from Birmingham, UK on the second day of the "Unholy Alliance Tour":

I literally got mugged when I jumped went up to the front barricade, the shirt ripped off my back. I knew it was going to be an insane show, but that was just a whole new level. You all just set the bar for not only the other UK dates, but the entire rest of the trek around Europe.

It was great catching up with our friends in Amon Amarth and Mastodon, we haven't toured with either band in about 3 years. The first night was a bit hectic for us with press so it was hard to catch a whole lot of either set but judging by the crowd reactions I could hear they had killer sets.

I caught a glimpse of Slayer as well, nothing but evilness coming from the stage! They are playing a killer set, I have never seen them play a lot of these songs live (Dittohead, Live Undead, etc...) If you are missing these shows you are a bastard haha!

As Jukebox Hero started to roll on the PA, we made our way down to the stage from our dressing way up at the top of the Apollo. There was a Slayer chant, then a Trivium Chant, then a bunch of loud undistinguishable crowd noise and our intro came on and it was go time. We did our pre show ritual group huddle and banter, and then it was only a matter of seconds till we were into KG.

Shit just went off, I jumped down into the audience mid way through, one of three times in the show, I lost a wrist band and got my bass way detuned, thanks!!! I remember random bits of the show after that, by the end the stage was covered in sweat, water, beer and just plain nasty. Corey was ripping solos on top of the PA's, I got out of the way of that shit because getting hit by a beast like Corey on the way down would be the end of me.

Matt had some classic lines too, my favorite was when he asked the audience "Who in hear hates Trivium? Make some noise!", some people responded, and then Matt said "No wonder I can't hear you, you scream like a bunch of pussies!', priceless shit!!! I was laughing so hard, and then Matt asked the Trivium friends and fans to make some noise and it was probably one of the loudest cheers of the night. Speaking of loud, how about Travis's kit, that shit sounds so killer! It's nice having a PA and monitor system that travels with the tour, I can actually feel the bass drum rattling my insides, it can't be healthy!

We have two new additions to our crew, Goodie (sound) and Mike (drum tech). Goodie joined us last tour and has been killing it at front of house every night, we can't do what we do without a good sound guy, buy the man a drink people (note: he likes Jaeger!!!) Mike had his first show with us last night and it went great as well, if you find him buy him some booze too!

Once again, thank you Manchester for showing us an amazing time!!!!!

See you tonight at the Wolverhampton Civic, Birmingham

Matt Heafy Discusses New Trivium Album

Arielle Castillo of New Times Broward-Palm Beach recently conducted an interview Trivium frontman, Matt Heafy.

Here are some excerpts from the interview:

New Times Broward-Palm Beach: "What’s the significance of the album’s title, 'Shogun'?"

Heafy: "I’ve always known of that word, and on our second Japanese tour, I was on a bus tour, like a tourist tour. They were talking about ancient shogun, who were the highest-ranking military people in ancient Japanese times. And I was like, Holy shit, that’s a really epic title, I want to use that for something. But I think 'The Crusade' was just about to come out, so there was no need for a title like that.

"We started writing the music for this record, and we saw how epic, how captivating the music was for the four of us, and we knew we needed a title that represented the music appropriately. So I brought up the title that I’ve always had in the back of my mind, and was like, Hey guys, how about this word? It’s perfect. It’s a word that summed up this album perfectly."

New Times Broward-Palm Beach: "Did Japanese history and folklore influence anything else with this record? I see you’ve got these traditional Japanese tattoos going on...."

Heafy: "Definitely on this record there are some Japanese historically influenced song titles, there’s also some Greek stuff, Judeo-Christian stuff. None of these are really retellings of specifically what the title is, or maybe what the song seems to be about, but they’re using these things as tools to further the lyrics even more.

"Like, the first song on the album is called 'Kirisute Gomen,' which was an ancient samurai term which was basically, if you pissed off a samurai, he could chop off your head by law. Like, sorry, but I have to take your head. I thought it was very pertinent. I liked it."

New Times Broward-Palm Beach: "So would you say this is in any way a concept kind of album?"

Heafy: "Conceptually, it’s got the same concepts going on, but it’s not a concept record. So there’s three 'concepts' in the same sentence. It does have some similar conceptual ideas."
