Tony Blair Could Never Master Black Sabbath Riff

Tony Blair has admitted he could never master BLACK SABBATH on guitar. The former British Prime Minister, who was in a band at university called UGLY RUMOURS, confessed to frontman OZZY OSBOURNE that he could never get the band's track 'Iron Man' right.

"I met Tony Blair a couple of years ago, and he said to me, 'I was in a band once, and I could never get the riff to 'Iron Man' right,'" recalled Osbourne. "I thought, 'Why are you telling me about 'Iron Man' when there's a war going on?'"

Osbourne made the comments while DJing for Radio 1 as part of the station's 40th birthday celebrations. His show airs tonight (September 27) at 9pm.

Ozzy Osbourne Asks Fans To Choose Next Single

Ozzy Osbourne's official web site is currently hosting a poll for fans to vote on what song should be the next single from his "Black Rain" CD. There are three tracks to choose from: "Black Rain" (currently with 49% of the votes), "Civilize the Universe" (11%) and "Here for You" (40%).

"Black Rain" was reissued last month by Epic in a new jewel-case package containing the full booklet with lyrics and new color cover art and photos. It also contains CD extra bonus content featuring behind-the-scenes footage from the "Black Rain" photo shoot.

"Black Rain", which originally came out on May 22, was released in "eco-friendly" packaging, with the CD sleeve made out of recycled paper. In addition, the record came out without a booklet to further save paper, with the lyrics, credits and other inside material available to buyers of the CD at SonyMusic.com.

"Black Rain" features several songs based on current events and the state of the world in general. But Osbourne told The Pulse of Radio that he hasn't turned into an "issues-oriented" artist. "Believe me, I've not suddenly woken up and I'm sane," he said. "But I'm not one of these guys that can write about boy-meets-girl and, I mean, it's got to mean something to me. I don't write all the lyrics, but I have to say, 'Well, you know, isn't that strange that that happened when this happened,' you know, and I'll get going, you know."

"Black Rain" debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard album chart, with first-week sales of 152,000 copies.

To download OZZY OSBOURNE's "Black Rain" CD booklet as a PDF file, complete with lyrics, credits and artwork, click here. According to a posting on Ozzy's website, "you must insert the 'Black Rain' CD when prompted in order to be able to complete the download."

Police Officers Hurt At Charlotte Ozzfest

Steve Lyttle of The Charlotte Observer reports that off-duty law enforcement officers suffered minor injuries Tuesday night (August 28) while making an arrest during an Ozzfest 2007 concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in north Charlotte.

Overall, however, the sold-out concert took place without the amount of trouble that was experienced at a tour stop earlier this month.

According to police, several off-duty officers working in security at the concert were assaulted by a concert-goer and used force to take him into custody. An unspecified number of the officers suffered minor injuries while making the arrest, police say. The suspect was not hurt.

Tuesday's fracas was a far cry from what happened Aug. 16, during the Ozzfest event at the PNC Bank Art Center in Holmdel, N.J. According to published reports, two people died and 83 arrested at that concert.

Ozzfest has one remaining tour stop — Thursday night in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Rob Zombie To Support Ozzy Osbourne On Tour

ROB ZOMBIE confirmed in an interview with the Los Angeles TV station KTLA this morning (Thursday, August 23) that he will hit the road in October as the support act for OZZY OSBOURNE. According to Zombie, the trek is expected to run through December. Exact cities and dates will be announced soon.

The singer was originally in the running to open some fall dates for BLACK SABBATH offshoot band HEAVEN AND HELL, but couldn't commit to that because it was too close to the opening of his remake of the horror classic "Halloween".

ROB ZOMBIE's first-ever live album, entitled simply "Zombie - Live", is scheduled for release on October 23. The CD was recorded over several nights during the band's "Educated Horses" tour and will include a 36-page super-deluxe book of never-before-seen live pictures and a DVD of live footage and animated videos. It was mixed by Zombie and producer Scott Humphrey. The track listing is as follows:

01. Sawdust in the Blood
02. American Witch
03. Demon Speeding
04. Living Dead Girl
05. More Human than Human
06. Dead Girl Superstar
07. House of 1000 Corpses
08. Let It All Bleed Out
09. Creature of the Wheel
10. Demoniod Phenomenon
11. Supercharger Heaven
12. Never Gonna Stop
13. Black Sunshine
14. Superbeast
15. The Devil's Rejects
16. Lords of Salem
17. Thunder Kiss
18. Dragula

As previously reported, Zombie is putting together a WHITE ZOMBIE box set containing "everything we ever recorded," according to the singer. "I am currently transferring all the early shit from the original tapes," he previously said. "No remixing going on here — everything will be as it was originally recorded. Don't know when this box set will be available, but it is slowly moving forward. This will be the final word on WHITE ZOMBIE."

ROB ZOMBIE's first-ever career retrospective, "Past, Present & Future", has sold more than a million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. The two-disc set, which was released in September 2003 through Geffen Records, contains a CD of 19 digitally remastered selections and a DVD of 10 music videos, including three that were previously unreleased.

Warped Organizer Apologizes To Sharon Osbourne

Warped Tour organizer Kevin Lyman has apologized to Sharon Osbourne for his comments regarding her motives in staging this year's Ozzfest as a "free" event. In a recent interview with The Kansas City Star, Lyman stated about this summer's traveling heavy metal festival, "It allowed Ozzy Osbourne to get one more paycheck out of [Ozzfest], to be 100 percent honest." Lyman didn't hold back, going on to comment about tour founder Sharon Osbourne: "[She's] a smart person, but basically that's what it is. It's a ploy, straight-up. ... She was struggling to put [together a bill] because she keeps charging more and more and selling less and less tickets. The attendance of that tour has been dropping for many years, and she keeps having to spend more on the talent to get people to the shows."

In a letter released to the media earlier today by Sharon Osbourne's publicist, Lyman tells Ozzy's wife, "I wanted to apologize if any of my comments quoted in The Kansas City Star were taken out of context or based on misinformation I was given. It was not my intent to discredit Ozzy or your family in any way. If Ozzy is in fact working for expenses only, then I was wrong in saying he was out for one more paycheck. I’ll be the first to say I should not bother myself with other tours and keep my nose in my own projects as they have been keeping me busy enough as it is. For that, I’m sorry. If you feel the need to release this letter in its entirety to your Ozzfest fans, please do so — I've always been a supporter of Ozzfest and the work you do and hope that this summer's tour brings you and Ozzy great success."

Warped Organizer Speaks Out About Free Ozzfest

Alan Sculley of KansasCity.com reports: In 1996 Ozzfest became the first full-fledged touring heavy metal festival.

This year, courtesy of select sponsors, it's the first free major festival tour. OZZY OSBOURNE, LORDI and HATEBREED are fronting the bill that's stopping in 25 cities.

It's obviously a good deal for fans who get free tickets. But some within the concert industry see this unprecedented move as a good business decision by Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne just to keep Ozzfest afloat.

"It allowed Ozzy Osbourne to get one more paycheck out of (Ozzfest), to be 100 percent honest," said Kevin Lyman, organizer of the Warped Tour that will be at Verizon Aug. 15. "Sharon's a smart person, but basically that's what it is. It's a ploy, straight up. Ozzy's getting paid to do that show. She was struggling to put (together a bill) because she keeps charging more and more and selling less and less tickets. The attendance of that tour has been dropping for many years, and she keeps having to spend more on the talent to get people to the shows."

The Osbournes say it's a rebellion of sorts against rising costs, not only from the participants' fees but also from ticket prices for concerts in general. But in a phone interview in early July in Europe, Ozzy admitted he was puzzled when Sharon floated the idea.

"I was like, 'Sharon, what the (bleep) are you talking about?'" Osbourne said, injecting his favorite four-letter word for emphasis. "I said, 'You're smoking my (bleeping) weed, aren't you?' She goes, 'No, the only way I can put the brakes on these (bleepers) is to (make Ozzfest free).' What happens is this: Every time we do Ozzfest, somebody wants another (bleeping) 30 grand or 50, or more than they got the last year. So what happens is, it comes out of the price of the ticket."

Ozzy Osbourne Undergoes Surgery

Denver's 9NEWS entertainment reporter Kirk Montgomery has confirmed Ozzy Osbourne had surgery at Rose Medical Center Saturday night (July 28).

The 59-year-old was in town for Ozzfest 2007, which took place at Coors Amphitheatre on Saturday.

Kirk reports that Osbourne was complaining of leg pain for most of the day. After the show, Osbourne was taken to Rose where he underwent surgery on his leg for a blood clot.

Osbourne was expected to be released from the hospital on Sunday. Kirk says wife Sharon was not travelling with him.

Osbourne has released 13 albums during his 20-year career with Epic Records. He won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2000 as a part of BLACK SABBATH for "Iron Man" and received a star on the world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2002. He was inducted as a member of BLACK SABBATH into the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Ozzy Osbourne To Sing On New Mountain Album

Ozzy Osbourne is featured on the title track of MOUNTAIN's new album, "Masters of War", due on July 24 via Big Rack Records. The CD features rearrangements of classic BOB DYLAN songs by MOUNTAIN singer-guitarist Leslie West and drummer Corky Laing along with all-star help, including ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND and GOV'T MULE singer-guitarist Warren Haynes.

Ozzy has known West and Laing for over 35 years — BLACK SABBATH's first U.S. tour was as the opening act for MOUNTAIN.

The friendship was renewed in 2005 when Osbourne recorded MOUNTAIN's "Mississippi Queen" for his "Prince of Darkness" box set, and he got West to play guitar on the track.

Black Sabbath To Reunite In 2008?

Gary Graff of Billboard.com reports that about 3,000 tickets for each of Ozzfest 2007's 24 shows — which begin Thursday in Auburn, Wash. — have been held back in order to provide upgraded seating for fans. Those will include reserved pavilion locations and even some seats that are actually on the stage.

"On the day of the show you can get to different booths, enter a lottery and get upgraded," Ozzfest organizer Sharon Osbourne explains to Billboard.com. "We'll be upgrading throughout the day, 3,000 people. That's a lot of people to upgrade."

Osbourne adds that the upgrades will be handled in a manner that puts some premium on arriving early for the show, although this year's Ozzfest will begin at noon, rather than 10 a.m. or earlier in previous years. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m.

Sharon Osbourne also revealed that talks are ongoing about a BLACK SABBATH reunion in 2008.

"We're definitely talking to the guys, just talking," she says. "I think when they finish their (HEAVEN AND HELL with Ronnie James Dio) tour and we finish (Ozzfest), we can sit down and spend more time on it."

Ozzy: "I Have To Do Alot Of Shouting"

Ernest A. Jasmin of The News Tribune recently conducted an interview with Ozzy Osbourne. A few excerpts follow:

The News Tribune: The first [Ozzfest 2007] gig is at the White River Amphitheatre. And a couple of years ago you had a rough gig there. (Ozzy stormed offstage in 2005 after his voice went out.)

Ozzy: I get a lot of voice problems. … You have to do a lot of shouting, you know. That's why I think we're booked on the early part of this tour. … I've just done the biggest European tour I've ever done. And I had a little bit of voice trouble. But it seems to be getting better now, you know.

The News Tribune: Given that in recent years you've had vocal problems, and the first two songs on the new album are called "Not Going Away" and "I Don't Wanna Stop", have you considered retirement?

Ozzy: Every year I do. … I was listening to the demo tapes of "No More Tears" today, which was recorded, like, 15 years ago. And I would go, "@#$%@% hell." My voice has a lot higher range, you know. And I was talking to Bob Seger a couple of years ago when I was out with him, and I asked him, "Can you still get up there? Like when you sing ('Old Time Rock & Roll'.)" He said, "I have problems." We all have problems. When it's going great, I love it. When it's going bad, I hate it. … There's a lot of people doing a lot of trickery, with @#%@%@ machines and everything. Like a friend of mine went to see MADONNA, and apparently she does the whole @#$@%@ thing lip-sync.

The News Tribune: When will you know that it's time to pass the torch?

Ozzy: If I go from playing @#%@%@ big shows to playing clubs — I ain't gonna be doing that. … If the audience dwindles, and I don't enjoy it any more, I'll quit, you know. I don't want to play to an empty room or an empty theater or an empty amphitheater. I mean, they've been asking the STONES for the last @#%@%@ 20 years, … and they're still going.

The News Tribune: I read this is the first album you've done completely sober.

Ozzy: Yeah, yeah. I've recorded albums sober before. But I haven't co-written albums or written anything sober before. And why I did it like that was I found a friend of mine. He's got a lot more years time than I have. I says to him, "The alcohol and the drugs fuel my creativity." He says, "That's what your addiction tells you. But what you've gotta do is don't be afraid to ask for help."

When I'm doing an album, I'm usually like some deranged @#%@%@ pregnant man. I didn't get myself too involved. When I have a vision in my head – I don't play music. I can't read music. I can't hardly read English considering I'm so dyslexic. I had to detach myself from it, you know. And the success of the TV show was (considers) it just put me on this ride, you know.

The News Tribune: Were you apprehensive about how people would receive your album after the show?

Ozzy: Well, no. Luckily for me, I've done other projects of covers and things that have been great sellers for me. But that was just to let (fans) know that I'm still around, you know. But my own albums, they've always been successful, you know. So for whatever reason this album, "Black Rain", didn't do as well as (expected). I can't really complain because I've had such a great — next year it'll be 40 years I've been doing what I've been doing.

Zakk Wylde Talks About Free Ozzfest

Australia's Undercover News recently caught up with OZZY OSBOURNE guitarist Zakk Wylde to ask him about this year's Ozzfest, which is being staged as a free show.

On the topic of this year's event being free, Zakk said, "You never question your mother [referring to Ozzy's wife and Ozzfest founder Sharon Osbourne — Ed.]. So I never question mom. So the bottom line is this: It's none of my business — I just show up and I play and I do what I gotta do and the beer is ice-cold. Game over, badda-boom, badda-bang. That's it."

Concert-promotions giant Live Nation gave away 428,000 tickets over a four-day period last month through its web site and various sponsor sites. Beginning June 8, fans entered exclusive codes to obtain tickets to one of the 24 Ozzfest dates. More than 228,000 passes were distributed June 12 alone, with the last one given away just after midnight, according to Live Daily.

This year, the 12th annual installment of Ozzfest will find OZZY OSBOURNE on the main stage alongside STATIC-X, LAMB OF GOD and LORDI. The second stage will feature headliner HATEBREED with BEHEMOTH, MONDO GENERATOR, NILE, ANKLA, CIRCUS DIABLO, THE SHOWDOWN, 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, DAATH, CHTHONIC and IN THIS MOMENT.

Ozzfest 2007 will launch July 12 in Seattle, WA at the White River Amphitheatre.

Ozzy To Help Taiwan In U.N. Membership Bid

Reuters has posted this report:

After 14 failed attempts at joining the United Nations using media campaigns and presidential appeals, Taiwan is turning to a local Goth-style Rock band backed by Ozzy Osbourne in its quest for membership to the world body.

The band, named CHTHONIC, will travel to at least 80 cities in four countries by the end of the year, supported in part by the Taiwan government, which is providing pro-U.N. literature and a slogan-painted truck.

The band will visit Canada, Germany, Britain and the United States.

CHTHONIC has also recorded a song urging the United Nations to let Taiwan join, even though its bid for membership keeps getting knocked down because of objections from Beijing.

"I'm not for any political party, but I'm for my poor country's joining the United Nations," band lyricist Freddy Lim told reporters on Wednesday at the tour's launch.

Ozzy Osbourne, a satanic-theme rocker known for biting heads off bats on stage, is helping set up 20 of the U.S. gigs, paying some transport costs and letting the Taiwan band promote U.N. membership as it wishes, Lim said. He said the band hooked up with Osbourne through personal connections.

Taiwan's leadership came up with the idea as it prepares to reapply for U.N. membership later this year, the cabinet's news office said on Tuesday.

China blocks self-ruled Taiwan's applications every year because it sees the island as part of its territory and not a separate country. The two sides split after civil war in 1949, and Taiwan left the United Nations in 1971 under Chinese pressure.

Sharon Osbourne Says She Grew Up Around Violence

According to The Sun Online, Sharon Osbourne has revealed she took a poo on a gift her dad received when she was a child!

She was taking her revenge on him for having an affair, she says.

"My father's mistress bought him a really ugly monkey statue once. When I found out he was having an affair with her I felt betrayed. I felt so stupid," she said. "This man that I thought was such an honest, good man was a fake. So I got this stupid concrete monkey and did a s**t on it. I was laughing. I was laughing so much that I p****d on it too. Then I cried. I left it there for him as a statement, I suppose," she told Dr. Pamela Connolly on the U.K. TV show "Shrink Rap".

And Sharon explained that her relationship with music manager dad Don Arden — who looked after SMALL FACES, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA and Ozzy's BLACK SABBATH — was often rocky.

"I was surrounded by violent people, violent talk, violent behavior, so there was nothing unusual seeing my dad threatening someone, or brandishing a firearm. It seemed normal. I thought everybody was like this. It was part of our lives," she said.

"My father really had a temper. He had a voice which would echo through the entire house. A couple of times he would whack me and he used to yank my hair."

But she added that it did not seem that uncommon to her.

"I wouldn't say I was abused and beaten; in those days it was a normal thing."

And Sharon also explained that her dad devised some cruel punishments for her.

"I was in awe of him. I always wanted to please him. To do that I always had to do as he said. As punishment, my dad used to lock me in the unlit coal cupboard in the basement. I still panic in confined spaces to this day. I won't go on the underground. I hate packed trains."
