Warped Tour Organizer Speaks Out About Free Ozzfest 2007

Alan Sculley of KansasCity.com reports: In 1996 Ozzfest became the first full-fledged touring heavy metal festival.

This year, courtesy of select sponsors, it's the first free major festival tour. OZZY OSBOURNE, LORDI and HATEBREED are fronting the bill that's stopping in 25 cities.

It's obviously a good deal for fans who get free tickets. But some within the concert industry see this unprecedented move as a good business decision by Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne just to keep Ozzfest afloat.

"It allowed Ozzy Osbourne to get one more paycheck out of (Ozzfest), to be 100 percent honest," said Kevin Lyman, organizer of the Warped Tour that will be at Verizon Aug. 15. "Sharon's a smart person, but basically that's what it is. It's a ploy, straight up. Ozzy's getting paid to do that show. She was struggling to put (together a bill) because she keeps charging more and more and selling less and less tickets. The attendance of that tour has been dropping for many years, and she keeps having to spend more on the talent to get people to the shows."

The Osbournes say it's a rebellion of sorts against rising costs, not only from the participants' fees but also from ticket prices for concerts in general. But in a phone interview in early July in Europe, Ozzy admitted he was puzzled when Sharon floated the idea.

"I was like, 'Sharon, what the (bleep) are you talking about?'" Osbourne said, injecting his favorite four-letter word for emphasis. "I said, 'You're smoking my (bleeping) weed, aren't you?' She goes, 'No, the only way I can put the brakes on these (bleepers) is to (make Ozzfest free).' What happens is this: Every time we do Ozzfest, somebody wants another (bleeping) 30 grand or 50, or more than they got the last year. So what happens is, it comes out of the price of the ticket."

I am sure SOAD sparked part of the debate but it is not entirely their fault. And honestly, it is a ploy, but a rather decent ploy if you ask me. I am curious to know the prices of food, beverage, and various merch inside Ozzfest though....

I think the warped tour sucks! At least the Ozzfest has good bands playing unlike your gay a$$ warped tour.
Yes the food and beverages cost alot but that is the venue making the money not the bands. The bands make money off the merch they sell.
The warped tour that should be free all the time because of the lack of musicianship the bands suck!!
Besides Ozzy rules metal!

You gotta think outside the realm of metal to understand this though. We might dislike and hate the vast majority of bands on Warped Tour, but for every one of us that puts a fist in the air for LoG, theres another punk kid who goes to warped for the Casualties. Warped has a more dedicated fan base because it caters to a more diverse population of people. Ozzfest has jumped from popular genre to popular genre.

Touche, PointShift. I've been to a few Ozzfests and two Warped tours, and there's no real cmparison to which one was better to me, but as far as variety and range of styles go, Warped Tour was way ahead of the curve. I like Ozzfest more because out of all 90,024 bands on Warped Tour any given year, there's maybe four or five at most that I want to see. There's been Ozzfests where there was only two bands on the damn thing that I DIDN'T want to see. And at Warped, there's 14 different stages, and to me, there's only one or two worth watching, usually. Plus, I saw Warped at Comerica and there is NO SHADE in Comerica. Plus they oversell tickets, and then the closest you get to the band you came to see is a good 90 yards, at least. Plus there's scads of emo b****es and punker chicks giving you static. The chicks may be hot from time to time, but other than smoking pot in the porta-toilets, there's not too much fun to be had at Warped anymore.

Just to be clear I wasn't ragging on Ozzfest. I think the free ticket idea is genius, but still a ploy. Ploys don't inherently have to be bad. I think next year's Ozzfest will truly show how it went over. Only reason I'm not going this year is I can't see a damn thing in my wheelchair.
