New Interview With Killswitch Engage
A brand new audio interview with New England metallers KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, which aired Tuesday night (August 22) on the "Mike Davies Rock Show" on BBC Radio 1, is available for streaming online at BBC.co.uk.
As previously reported, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE ahs set "As Daylight Dies" as the title of its new album, due on November 21 via Roadrunner Records.
"There was really hardly any thought put into it at all," bassist Mike D'Antonio told MTV.com. "It just came out and we hadn't written in so long that everyone had a lot to contribute. It felt more like the sessions for [2002's] 'Alive or Just Breathing', where everyone was contributing, and everyone had a say. That is more, to me, what the KILLSWITCH style is. But, it is the typical line that everyone gives you — that this is a heavier album — but it kind of is. It's definitely way heavier. There are still the melodic choruses here and there, and there's a lot to latch onto. But it's heavy."
"As Daylight Dies" is the result of more than a month and a half in the studio with KILLSWITCH guitarist and one of metal's "it" producers, Adam Dutkiewicz (UNDEROATH, ALL THAT REMAINS). Dutkiewicz will also be mixing the record, which will feature a dozen songs, including "This Is Absolution", "For You" and the title track.

Opeth Frontman Clarifies Statements On Labelmates
Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt has clarified statements he made during an interview with an Australian magazine — but hasn't gone out of his way to patch up the wounds. When asked about the current state of metal, he told the magazine that he didn't care for most of today's bands, and that "when I grew up it was like heresy to compare [labelmates] Killswitch Engage and whatever you got going with [Iron] Maiden and [Judas] Priest. The bands feel manufactured, almost like boy bands with guitars. I don't want my bands to be f---ing pretty." On Opeth's official forum, Åkerfeldt said the article was "a bit misleading," and that while he doesn't "particularly like Killswitch," he has nothing "against them really. All I was saying [is] that I don't see the same quality in them as I do in Priest or Maiden. [Killswitch] to me sounds like a rehashed version of what's been going on in Sweden for 16 years or more. The boy-band comment ... was not addressed to [Killswitch] but an observation of the overall 'nu' or whatever metalcore scene [there is] in the U.S. All of you gotta understand that out of the zillion interviews I do, some will take the so-called 'good stuff' and put it forward and make me seem like a pr---."
Members of KSE, Shadows Fall Bring Overcast Back
MTV.com has a nice piece on the background of Overcast, featuring current Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and Seemless memebers, who are re-recording their old material for a formal release. Here's an excerpt:
Killswitch Engage bassist Mike D'Antonio remembers the exact moment when Overcast — his influential, erstwhile Massachusetts metal band that counted among its members Shadows Fall frontman Brian Fair — ended. It was a week or so after the band's first U.S. tour (with Disembodied and Shai Hulud) had concluded, and the guys in the band returned from a six-week road trip with about $500 to their names.
"We were all just kind of beaten to death," D'Antonio recalled. "We had worked so incredibly hard to get the band to where it was, with little or nothing to show for it besides just fans coming out and seeing us and being really into the band. We just needed to cut our losses and go home, and unfortunately, that was the way most of the people felt in the band. We had gotten done with a practice, and everyone told me how they were feeling. [That band] was my baby — something I cared about more than almost anything else in the world at that point. So when people were telling me they didn't want to do it, I didn't want to face reality. It really bothered me."
...
Before year's end, D'Antonio said he hopes to release Reborn to Kill Again, an album featuring more than 10 classic, revisited Overcast tunes and two previously unreleased cuts the band wrote before disbanding but never recorded. Neither song has a title, D'Antonio said, and for one of them, Fair "actually took the lyrics and used them for a Shadows Fall song" called "Root Bound Apollo," from the 2000 album Of One Blood; Killswitch guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz (Unearth, Underoath) will helm the new Overcast project. The band's recorded all the drum tracks so far and will start working on the guitar parts next week. The plan's to finish the LP by the end of May. D'Antonio said several labels are vying for the disc, but not Killswitch's label, Roadrunner — they've passed on it.
Overcast will perform this weekend in Worcester, Massachusetts, during the New England Hardcore and Metal Festival. The band's also booked a gig at Club Hipnotic in New London, Connecticut, for June 3 and is in talks to take the stage inside New York's CBGB next month.
In addition, Killswitch Engage will begin writing fresh material in July for the follow-up to 2004's The End of Heartache — an album Roadrunner hopes to be able to release in November, D'Antonio said. He added that the band's also just recorded a cover of Dio's "Holy Diver" for a forthcoming Kerrang! magazine-commissioned compilation. That disc is going to feature some of today's heaviest metal acts tackling a number of genre classics.
"[Frontman] Howard [Jones] sang in falsetto," he said. "It came out super good. Everyone's really excited about it. The guitar riffs are definitely modified to sound way, way heavier."

Killswitch Engage/Shadows Fall Supergroup Make CD
OVERCAST, the long-defunct influential Massachusetts band which featured in its ranks KILLSWITCH ENGAGE bassist Mike D'Antonio and SHADOWS FALL singer Brian Fair, has reunited and will be will be playing this year's New England Metal And Hardcore Festival on Saturday, April 29. In addition, the band will be re-recording 10-14 classic tracks and laying down two previously unreleased songs for a full length album entitled "Reborn to Kill Again", in May 2006. Adam Dutkiewicz (KILLSWITCH ENGAGE) has signed on as producer of this endeavor for which a label deal has yet to be announced.
Regarding their decision to re-record classic material, OVERCAST said in a statement, "Simply put, we are having the time of our lives hanging together and playing these old songs again. We feel as if we are breathing new life into this dead material. Suddenly the ambition to 'one up' ourselves has returned, more thirsty than ever. But most importantly, our main reason is due to the overwhelming excitement of the old skool fans, even to this day. For the kids who have shown us MUCH love over the years by coming up to us at shows and telling us how much they appreciated OVERCAST. These people have provided us with the greatly needed encouragement and enthusiasm we have been lacking. They have given us a vision to try this band one more time. For them we dedicate our new found time and energy towards this recording. We consider it an honor that some of you still care."
From August 1991 to November 1998, five people had an obsession with music entitled OVERCAST. Motivated by having fun and playing songs that went against the grain, the band stayed true to themselves by writing music they wanted to play ... fashionable or not. Money was never an issue back then mainly because there wasn't any to be had. Sometimes the group would play for gas money, most times for far far less. Only through sacrifice and perseverance did they make it work. First-hand experience and trial and error provided their path. They had no one to rely on but themselves. Years and years of weekend warrior tours took them places they normally would never have gone or seen. It was indeed a time they still reflect on and a time they will never forget.
But all things come to an end. After years of being turned down by labels, skimped out on by promoters, and a general sense of the band being too much of an albatross to continue ... in 1998 OVERCAST disbanded. Heartbroken and emotionally taxed, they went their separate ways. Brian joined SHADOWS FALL (a band who had opened for OVERCAST on many occasions), Mike started working on a project called KILLSWITCH ENGAGE. Guitarist Pete Cortese continued writing and ended up in a band called SEEMLESS. Guitarist Scott McCooe began playing bass in TRANSIENT. Drummer Jay Fitzgerald formed and played in many bands, finally settling down in the band TUNNEL DRILL.
Now eight years have passed since OVERCAST was an active band. All of a sudden the stars have aligned, the planets have shifted, and old friends find themselves back home with substantial amounts for free time. OVERCAST is reborn.
