The Netherlands has a long history when it comes to metal music. This small, European country has produced plenty of excellent groups over the years such as Pestilence and God Dethroned and held plenty of festivals, including the Eindhoven Metal Meeting, where so many bands have performed and recorded live releases. Adding to this list of talented metallers is a group with one of the most suited monikers in death metal, the Zeeland based, Gorefest.
Gorefest were formed in 1989 in the city of Goes in the Netherlands and initially comprised of guitarists Alex van Schaik and Frank Harthoorn, drummer Marc Hoogendoorn and vocalist/bassist Jan-Chris de Koeijer. This lineup recorded their first demo, "Tangled in Gore" that same year, which was received extremely well by the extreme metal underground and led to them appearing on the split record, "Where Is Your God Now?" with such bands as Dead Head, Acrostichon, Disfigure and Sinister, before recording another demo, "Horrors in a Retarded Mind," which was also met warmly by metalheads and gained enough attention for them to be booked as the support for Carcass in the Netherlands and Belgium. 11th Hour's mastermind is no other than jack-of-all-trades Ed Warby, who already carved his name into the history of metal with Gorefest and Hail of Bullets. With his new band, Warby takes a turn towards old-school doom metal. Slow motion grooves, viscious riffs, and a bleak atmosphere are at the heart of the music. The songs resonate with darkness and despair and grab the listener from the get-go. A full length release is tentatively scheduled for fall 2009.
"The 11th Hour is upon us, and it is with great pleasure that we announce our freshly forged bond with Napalm Records. It's an honor to be added to such a great and diverse artist roster and we feel it's the perfect home for our massive brand of doom metal! Now let's open those floodgates of doooooom…"
Death metal band HAIL OF BULLETS' debut album, "…Of Frost and War" has been streaming in its entirety on the band's MySpace page since May 9.
The band is also getting front page features on the MySpace music-sites in the Benelux, Sweden and Germany.
Hail of Bullets consists of former PESTILENCE and current ASPHYX-singer Martin van Drunen, ex-HOUWITSER bass player Theo van Eekelen, GOREFEST-drummer Ed Warby and both THANATOS-guitarists Paul Baayens (also in ASPHYX) and Stephan Gebédi.
"...Of Frost and War" was released yesterday, May 13.
HAIL OF BULLETS, the new band featuring GOREFEST drummer Ed Warby, THANATOS guitarists Stephan Gebédi and Paul Baayens, former PESTILENCE/ASPHYX singer Martin Van Drunen and former HOUWITSER bass player Theo van Eekelen, has entered Excess studios in Rotterdam, Holland to begin recording its debut album for a May release via Metal Blade Records.
Warby has issued the following update: "Dan's [Swanö, Swedish producer/multi-instrumentalist] working his ass off to deliver the most savage, massive and brutal mix ever and we're almost there! The first mix was good but a bit too nice, the second one nasty but not yet heavy enough, and late last night Dan dropped a fuckin' bomb on us entitled 'mix3'. It's a scorcher. As with all mixes there's still some details that need to be worked out, but when your own music starts giving you goose-bumps, you know things are on the right track! Every part I had doubts about before now works like a perfect war machine. Amazing what a change in sound and/or level can do to an arrangement. So, I think you guys can officially start looking forward to a fuckin monster of an album!"
HAIL OF BULLETS, featuring former PESTILENCE/ASPHYX singer Martin van Drunen and GOREFEST drummer Ed Warby, have entered Excess studios in Rotterdam, Holland to begin recording their debut album for a May release via Metal Blade Records. The band have issued the following studio update from Warby:
"As we're entering the final stages of recording our full length album for Metal Blade Records, we thought we'd share some choice footage of the proceedings. First up is a four-minute glimpse of yours truly beating the shit out of his drums. You can almost see that one crash break! The song I'm doing here is one of the more brutal ones (well, they all are, I guess), with some cool fills and stuff to spice up the umta-umta onslaught. I think I broke an average of 3-4 sticks per song during this session. The forests weep..." More...

According to a posting on the web site of German thrashers DESTRUCTION, the Devil's Revenge Festival — which was to take place December 29, 2007 at Stadthalle in Lichtenfels, Germany — has been cancelled. "The band is dissapointed by this last-minute cancellation beyond their control 'cause this was supposed to be the last German show until summer/autumn 08," reads a posting on the site. "DESTRUCTION will now start working on the 25th anniversary album that will have a worldwide release in August 2008 on AFM, Candlelight and King Records!"
In addition to DESTRUCTION, Devil's Revenge was scheduled to include performances by GOREFEST, EVOCATION, DEMONICAL, IMPERIOUS REX, DEATHRONATION, VOMITORY and THE DUSKFALL.
Dutch metallers GOREFEST have issued the following update:
"Their elections may be dodgy, their weather suitable only to fools and penguins, and their billboards indecipherable, but when it comes to his or her enjoyment of metal, the Russian metalhead doesn't fuck around. No siree, Bob. Insane amounts of vodka are downed, faces turn red, the volume goes up to eleven and within 3 seconds, the world's upside down and Metal Reigns Supreme. The Russians made us feel very welcome indeed, and we met the friendliest of people in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Both are massive, sprawling cities with very impressive architecture, a strong sense of culture and history, and home to some of the sexiest women I've ever seen. It was truly an honour for us to be invited over, and we'd like to thank Vladimir and Vitali for being such excellent hosts, and taking great care of us. We had no idea what to expect of these dates, but I think I speak for all when I say we'll be back in a flash if someone invites us again. Spasibo, Prijatno poznakomitsa, Gde tualet?"
GOREFEST's setlist was as follows:
01. The Glorious Dead
02. State of Mind
03. For the Masses
04. When the Dead Walk the Earth
06. Rise to Ruin
07. Mental Misery
08. You Could Make Me Kill
09. Babylon's Whores
12. The War on Stupidity
13. Reality / When You Die
14. Speak When Spoken To
15. Confessions of a Serial Killer More...
HAIL OF BULLETS, the new band featuring GOREFEST drummer Ed Warby, THANATOS guitarists Stephan Gebédi and Paul Baayens, former PESTILENCE/ASPHYX singer Martin Van Drunen and former HOUWITSER bass player Theo van Eekelen, has inked a deal with Metal Blade Records.
HAIL OF BULLETS was formed in late 2006 through a mutual love for old-school death metal bands like AUTOPSY, BOLT THROWER, MASSACRE, CELTIC FROST and DEATH. In the summer of 2007, the band entered a Rotterdam studio to record a four-song promotional CD, which was mixed by the infamous death metal guru Dan Swanö in Sweden. Swanö stated upon the CD's completion: "If this promo doesn't get you guys a good record deal, I will eat my laptop!"
Commented Martin Van Drunen: "When we heard the final Swanö mix of the promo, the question for me was not if we got signed at all, but more to whom. We're all very experienced musicians and we knew that we created an awful fucking heavy piece of molten metal. A smart and appropriate A&R man/woman at a high-quality label recognizes this immediately. So Metal Blade didn't hesitate. Important to me was that they let us free in performing in our other bands and they didn't have a problem with that at all. Of course as a young metal kid I saw this label rising from a little company 'til the standard that it has now; the name Brian Slagel always remaining in the back of my head as one of the pioneers. Always delivering quality metal bands and never a bad word in the press from whatever what signing. The pact is solid. We'll deliver our old-school death metal supreme, Metal Blade will do the rest. We're one of the best in what we do and they're in theirs. Blades meet Bullets!"
Added Stephan Gebédi: "The HAIL OF BULLETS promo was sent out to just a handful of carefully selected record labels. Metal Blade was my personal first choice, so when they actually made us an interesting offer, it was an offer I definitely could not refuse! Many classic metal albums have been released on Metal Blade Records over the past few decades, so an old-school death metal band signing to a classic metal label can be seen as the ultimate metal marriage forged in the fires of Hades!"
HAIL OF BULLETS will enter the studio in February 2008 to begin recording its as-yet-untitled debut album for a May European release. The band is planning to promote the CD with a number of live appearances during the European summer festival season.
HAIL OF BULLETS' entire four-song promotional CD is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.

Dutch metallers GOREFEST have issued the following update from the road in Europe:
"So, we’re now 8 days into our first tour since we got back together as a band, and already we’ve faced that scourge of any decent Metal-tour, the old Trouble With The Trailer chestnut.
This usually takes about a day, or sometimes 36 hours, to fix. Typically, it took us, or rather our bus-company, 4 days. It doesn’t seem to have much effect on the Brewing of Metal we’re practicing every night.
So far, Spain and Italy have been witness to this unseemly act, and they’ve been lapping it up with every pounding stroke and quivering chord we dislodge. It’s almost obscenely heavy, and highly stimulating!
Maribor, Slovenia is next in our little black book, and judging by the disgusted looks of hapless bystanders during soundcheck, there will be plenty of fist-pumping and two-fingered tangoing going on tonight!"
GOREFEST's new album, "Rise to Ruin", has entered the Dutch chart at position No. 61. Due in the U.S. on September 25 via Candlelight, the CD was mixed by Danish producer Tue Madsen at his Antfarm studios in Århus, Denmark. "He managed to make everything sound even heavier than we'd imagined," guitarist Frank Harthoorn previously said.
GOREFEST's last CD, "La Muerte", was released in October 2005 via Nuclear Blast Records.
GOREFEST will team up with ONE MAN ARMY AND THE UNDEAD QUARTET and BEFORE THE FALL for a European tour beginning in September.
Dutch death metallers GOREFEST are currently streaming their new album Rise To Ruin online at their MySpace page.
Rise To Ruin is slated for release in North America on September 25th via Candlelight. The album is out now in Europe through Nuclear Blast Records.
Rise To Ruin, was recorded in July-August 2006 at Excess Studios in Rotterdam, Holland with producer Hans Pieters and Dennis Leidelmeijer. The album was mixed by Tue Madsen at Antfarm Studio, Denmark. Rise To Ruin features artwork by artist Rob ‘Mid’ Middleton. More...
DESTRUCTION and GOREFEST are among the confirmed bands for the Devil's Revenge Festival, set to take place December 29, 2007 in Lichtenfels, Germany. The festival billing is shaping up as follows:
DESTRUCTION's "Thrash Anthems" album, a collection of reworked/re-recorded versions of the band's classic tracks, was released in January via AFM Records. The CD was recorded at House of Music Studio in Germany) and Little Creek Studio in Switzerland with almost the same team that worked on the group's "Inventor of Evil" CD: DESTRUCTION's live sound engineers Gerd Krenz, Franky Winkelmann and GURD/POLTERGEIST mastermind VO Pulver. The tracks were mixed by one of the best metal producers in Europe — Jacob Hansen, the Danish producer and INVOCATOR singer and guitarist.
GOREFEST's new album, "Rise to Ruin", has had its U.S. release date pushed back to September 25 from the previously announced August 28. According to a posting on the reactivated Dutch metallers' web site, the delay is due to the fact that Candlelight Records USA has taked over distribution of the CD from Nuclear Blast America.
A brand new GOREFEST track, entitled "Revolt", has been posted on the band's MySpace page. The song comes off "Rise to Ruin", which will be released in Europe on August 3 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was mixed by Danish producer Tue Madsen at his Antfarm studios in Århus, Denmark. "He managed to make everything sound even heavier than we'd imagined," guitarist Frank Harthoorn previously said.
Dutch metallers GOREFEST have posted a new track entitled “Revolt” over at their official MySpace page. The track comes off their upcoming new album, Rise To Ruin, which will now be released in the U.S. on September 25th.
Dutch metallers GOREFEST will release their new album, Rise To Ruin, in North America on August 28th via Nuclear Blast. As previously reported, the mainland Europe release is set for August 3rd and in the UK the album drops on the 6th.
Rise To Ruin was recently mixed by Tue Madsen and features the following tracklist: 'Revolt', 'Rise To Ruin', 'The War On Stupidity', 'A Question Of Terror', 'Babylon's Whores', 'Speak When Spoken To', 'A Grim Charade', 'Murder Brigade', 'The End Of It All'.
DAN SWANO To Produce New Band Featuring PESTILENCE, GOREFEST, THANATOS Members ~
Swedish producer/multi-instrumentalist Dan Swano (EDGE OF SANITY, INFESTDEAD) has agreed to mix/produce the upcoming demo/CD from HAIL OF BULLETS, the new band featuring THANATOS guitarists Stephan Geb?di and Paul Baayens, former PESTILENCE/ASPHYX singer Martin Van Drunen, GOREFEST drummer Ed Warby, and former HOUWITSER bass player Theo van Eekelen. The recordings will take place in June/July and the band hopes to have it all finished before the end of the summer.
Geb?di previously stated about the group's upcoming CD, "We trust it will be a classic death metal album in more than one way. The material we've written so far is very strong stuff ranging from slow, doomy parts to the occasional blast beat. Funny thing to mention is that drummer Ed Warby has written most of the guitar riffs so far."
Gorefest posted the following on their official website:
First of all, a good new year to you all. Let's hope this one brings a lot of great things. It's been a while since we posted something positive on this page so here is for some good news.
We're well into the writing sessions of our new album due to be released mid 2007. We just finished the demo tapes with the foundations for 11 new songs. Drum tracks and rhythm guitars have been prerecorded and some vocals as well. Of the 11 songs we're going to choose about 9 songs to be put on the album. So now we're in the stage of making up drum fills, guitar solo's and whatnot, to give it all even more edge. Also vocal lines and lyrics are well on their way. We can honestly say this is going to be a brutal one. The frustration, anger and aggression that has been built up over the past year has really found it's way to the songs. Blasts, speed picking and fast polka's are more common than spare.
The same way we did with La Muerte we're going to record in the Excess studio's in Rotterdam with engineers Hans and Dennis. Tue Madsen will be doing mixing duty and the production will be more of a joint venture with him this time.
We plan to go into the studio for actual recording this march but before that you'll get a few chances to see us live. On February the 3rd we'll play in The Rock in Copenhagen DK and the 23rd we'll play in Simplon in Groningen NL. See for more details about these shows on our tour page. After a short resting period we'll be back with more shows in late April and May. Most likely there will be some festival appearances in June as well.
Cheers and have a good one,
