Swallow The Sun was brought to light back in 2000 when guitarist Juha Raivio asked his fellow band mate Pasi Pasanen to try out some songs that didn’t fit their current band’s ( Plutonium Orange) melodic rock style. They rehearsed a couple of songs together and decided to find more members and turn this venture into a band. The following year M. Jämsen joined as a second guitarist and M. Kotamäki from the black metal band Funeris Nocturnum as a vocalist. Soon after that another two members of Funeris Nocturnum came along- A. Munter on keyboards and M. Honkonen on bass.

In early 2003 Swallow The Sun recorded and self- released the demo “Out of This Gloomy Light”. As a result the band landed a record deal with Firebox Records and in July went back to the studio to record their debut album “The Morning Never Came”, which was released the same year and harvested a huge success within the underground community.

Their second album is due out in September 2005 through Firebox and Olympic Records.

Swallow The Sun Issues Studio Recording Diary

Swallow the Sun has posted an extensive recording diary detailing each day in the studio while they record their new album "New Moon." The full diary can be found here. An excerpt from the diary follows:

"TWO WEEKS EARLIER

"It's only two weeks before the studio sessions for our new album, 'New Moon', when we started really rehearsing the new songs in our rehearsal space at Lutakko, Jyväskylä. The Finnish President of Drums Kai Hahto is coming to rehearse the new songs with us, and we'll have to get everything ready within a week - we just don't have more time.

"Even though we had a really busy schedule, we got everybody playing together and the songs started to sound good. Naturally there was some uncertainty at start, but we are quite sure about what we can do and we didn't have to fall too deep in to depths of desperation. After the rehearsals brainstorming the new album continued at local bars and discotheques while enjoying a few drinks and other refreshments - 'an important part of the process', because in addition to rehearsing the album we also have to talk it through. "We have known Kai for years, and we have worked with him earlier when he played with us on our North American tour back in 2007. Knowing what he's capable of behind the drum set we are really excited about working with him again. We are confident that he can deliver drum parts that will not only perfectly fit the trademark Swallow the Sun -sound, but take it even further. We'll start rehearsing with him at the end of this month, and we'll keep you posted on how the album is coming up!"

Swallow The Sun Parts Ways With Drummer

Swallow the Sun has issued the following statement about parting ways with their drummer:

"There is no easy way to phrase this, so let's get straight to the point: due to a mutual decision Pasi Pasanen will no longer be playing with Swallow the Sun.

"Pasi, as one of the founding members, has been an integral part of the development of the band and it's sound since the beginning back in 2000. We have had good times, recorded 4 excellent albums and done unbelievable amounts of touring together, but now it's time for us to go on our separate ways.

"Here's Pasi's comments on the situation: 'Lately, I've been having a lack of motivation towards this kind of music and touring. The guys have felt it too and there's no point for me to deny it. It just affects the chemistry in the band too much, so it is time for me to step aside. I've gotten many good friends and some of the best experiences ever touring with StS. About 200 shows in 21 countries is something I never thought I'd get to do, so I want to thank & hail all the great people, friends, bands we've toured with and especially Juha, Jämy, Martti, Aleksi and Mikko for these years. And I'm sure you fans wont be disappointed with the future StS. Me and Juha will continue working together in Plutonium Orange, and you never know what other things the future brings, so: cheers everyone, see you somewhere!'

"We wish him well in everything, and Pasi will continue to play with Juha in Plutonium Orange - which is the band that got Swallow the Sun started in the first place - and they are just finishing their debut album.

"For what it comes to upcoming shows and the new album nothing will change. We won't cancel any shows, and we will enter Fascination Street studios 15th of June to record our next album. More information about everything will follow soon."

Darkane Recaps Soilwork Tour

Darkane has issued the following update:

"We're back in Sweden from what we believe was a very successful tour in North America together with Soilwork, Warbringer and Swallow the Sun. Thanks a lot to the other bands, crew and all the fans that showed up and made us feel welcome. Playing 50 shows in 52 days was kinda tough but we're very happy we managed to pull it through without any bigger issues. Now we are focusing on writing new material for the next album but before that we have a show at The Tivoli in our home town Helsingborg tomorrow (Saturday April 4th), and then we have the Roskilde festival and Nuclear Assault festival booked for this summer, and hopefully more will show up. Next week Peter Wildoer will head out on a European tour with Pestilence for three weeks."

"I am also very proud to announce that I am now officially endorsed by Steve Clayton guitar picks. I have been using Clayton pics (1.26 mm) since the middle of the nineties. Since Darkanes music is based on accurate playing I need a pick that feels steady and that I can count on when I hit my strings very hard. With the Clayton picks I get a very good and reliable grip allowing me to alter between fast and rhythmic playing without having to think about what my right hand is doing. See you out there!"

Darkane Issues Pre-tour Update

Guitarist Christofer Malmström of the Swedish metal band DARKANE has issued the following update:

"I realized that it's only 3.5 weeks left until we leave for our massive U.S. tour with SOILWORK, DAYLIGHT DIES, WARBRINGER and SWALLOW THE SUN. This tour will be interesting. We will play two shows, then have a day off, and then play like 35 days in a row without a break. I hope everyone will stay healthy because this will be rough. Then we have a day off again. All in all, we are going to play 50 shows in 52 days. 41 shows in the U.S. and nine in Canada. But the bottom line is that we are all looking forward to this VERY much!" More...

Enslaved Cancels North American Tour

Norwegian progressive metal artists Enslaved has posted the following message online:

"It is with great regret that Enslaved has to announce the cancellation of the North American 'Vertebrae' tour [with Swallow The Su and Keep Of Kalessin] scheduled for May 2009. At the heart of the issue lies a tour that was hard to get together in the first place so we've decided to let the whole tour be cancelled and start working on setting up a new North American tour all the way from scratch again. . . Our sincere apologies to all the fans that were ready to come out to these shows; but rest assured — we are working day and night on setting up the new tour that will replace these dates."
