Background

Swallow The Sun was brought to light back in 2000 when guitarist Juha Raivio asked his fellow band mate Pasi Pasanen to try out some songs that didn’t fit their current band’s ( Plutonium Orange) melodic rock style. They rehearsed a couple of songs together and decided to find more members and turn this venture into a band. The following year M. Jämsen joined as a second guitarist and M. Kotamäki from the black metal band Funeris Nocturnum as a vocalist. Soon after that another two members of Funeris Nocturnum came along- A. Munter on keyboards and M. Honkonen on bass.

In early 2003 Swallow The Sun recorded and self- released the demo “Out of This Gloomy Light”. As a result the band landed a record deal with Firebox Records and in July went back to the studio to record their debut album “The Morning Never Came”, which was released the same year and harvested a huge success within the underground community.

Their second album is due out in September 2005 through Firebox and Olympic Records.

Kreator & Accept Bulldoze Worcester To The Ground

When heavy metal came into my life in 1985/1986, one of the many reasons I fell in love, married it and grafted it into my very soul is due to one special band: Accept. “Metal Heart” was the second album I ever bought, and the love affair with this music grew. Through all the the ups and downs in the band’s career - the initially dreadful David Reece album “Eat the Heat” (which I later came to appreciate a little more), feeling heartbroken about the loss of Udo Dirkschneider (twice), the near disaster of “Predator,” the angst of the band’s return with yet another American vocalist back prior to the release of “Blood of Nations” - Accept has, and always will be, the source of my own metal heart. In the 80's, I joked a lot about how it was the “Nazi choruses” that drew me in. Today, that kind of statement would put me squarely within the crosshairs of overly sensitive individuals who would have no understanding of where I came from with the description should I dare to use it today. Of course, it didn’t help that the band is German. That long abandoned reference from my youth merely refers to the deep, low all male backing vocals that, for me, made Accept one of the greatest bands ever. “Bound to Fail” was the song that coined that phrase and “Stand Tight” reinforced it. Needless to say, I was ready to finally see the one Udo-less Accept incarnation that has found a way to rejuvenate the band and capture the old metal spirit with a whole new set of young fans, which is just glorious. The pairing with Kreator, another band I discovered when “Endless Pain” was released on Noise Records shortly after the band changed its name from Tormentor, seemed almost as perfect as it was slightly “genre mixed.” Add Finland’s Swallow the Sun, who seemed like the oddball out, and this bill became a “lust see.” More...

Swallow The Sun Posts New Song Online

Set for North American release on September 4th, 2012 via Spinefarm Records U.S. the 10-track offering -- which entered the official Finland charts at position No. 2 upon its European release -- was recorded during September and October 2011 by Mikko Karmila (Nightwish, Amorphis, Children Of Bodom) and includes a guest appearance by Nightwish singer Anette Olzon (on “Cathedral Walls”).

In commenting on the track, the band, again referencing long-running lyrical correlations to Twin Peaks, quoted a line from the series: “Dark. Laughing. The owls were flying. Many things were blocked. Laughing. The owls were near. The dark was pressing in on her. Quiet then. Later, footsteps. One man passed by. Screams far away. Terrible, terrible. One voice.”

In commenting on the track, the band, known lyrical correlations to Twin Peaks, quoted a line from the series: “As the night wind blows, the boughs move to and fro. The rustling, themagic rustling that brings on the dark dream. The dream of suffering and pain.”

"Emerald Forest and the Blackbird" entered the official Finland charts at position No. 2 upon its European release earlier this year. Set for North American release on September 4th, 2012 via Spinefarm Records U.S., the 10-track offering was recorded during September and October 2011 by Mikko Karmila (Nightwish, Amorphis, Children Of Bodom) at Drumforest Studios in Viitasaari and Sonic Pump 2 in Helsinki, and by Hannu Honkonen at Noisework Studios in Helsinki, also in Helsinki. Tuska Open Air Metal Festival 2012 , Day 2

And then it was Saturday! Day two of Tuska again started a bit earlier then the hungover and tired festival goers may have wished but the drowsy vibes quickly vanished (though not the rain clouds) as the day started on a much folkier note. Tuska Day Two promised another heavy day of good music, good people and the summer vibe that has Finns and Non Finn's coming from all over to partake in the festivities.

First up today was Estonian folk metallers Metsätöll! I have been excited to see these guys for years now and it was with bated breath that I entered the photo pit this morning! And here I will be a bit blasphemous and state that Lauri (Varulven) Õunapuu is quite simply a god of folk instruments. Throughout the set he seamlessly switched from bagpipes, to flutes, and numerous stringed Estonian folk instruments. Each one was expertly played and gave the performance a mysterious lovely quality. The Estonian language is quite obviously similar to Finnish, and in fact singer Markus "Rabapagan" Teeäär wows the predominantly Finnish crowd (and presumably wins their hearts) by speaking to them in Finnish. It needs to be said: his accent is much better than mine. Metsätöll is one of those folk metal bands that clearly love what they do, and though the music is fun and foly as ever, there is a lovely mysterious undertone that lends one’s mind to thinking thoughts of dark forests and legends of old. Finnish Metal Expo 2012 Day One

After being in Finland for a full year now, I once again was able to attend the annual Finnish Metal Expo in Helsinki. A good omen for the weekend was the fact that for the first time in weeks, the weather was not so freezing that my fingers would be tempted to fall off.

Perhaps a difference from last year, that I had noticed immediately was the fact the exhibition itself had shrunk a bit. Less guests, and less retail stands of course means smaller crowds and I wondered just what that would mean for the rather exciting lineup this year, which featured Swallow the Sun, ICS Vortex, Turisas and many more! Spinefeast at Sea Festival 2012

Tis the season apparently for metal cruises, and I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Spinefeast at Sea cruise from Helsinki, to Tallin last Thursday and Friday! The cruise was organized by Spinefarm Records, and with perfect timing as the label was celebrating its 20th birthday this year.

Here in Finland, these cruises to Tallin, Estonia are known for being somewhat of a booze cruise, and almost every Finn has been on one of these journeys to either Stockholm, Tallin, or St. Petersburg. The tax free alcohol and overall party mood are always a safe bet for a good time and I for one can’t think of a better accompaniment to my inexpensive alcohol consumption then to have a solid 20 hours of metal oriented fun! Aboard the ship, called The Baltic Princess, were opportunities for drinking, dancing, metal karaoke and of course an exciting and diverse lineup of 8 bands. More...

Waltari Celebrates 25 Years of Music

Finnish metal band Waltari recently celebrated their 25th anniversary as a band. Formed in 1986, they’ve become known in their careers as a band that excels at combining different styles of music, especially creating diverse and refreshingly open minded variations within rock and metal. So it was only natural that at their anniversary show at Nosturi in Helsinki, some of the areas diverse quantity of musicians within the Finnish musical community (and a few other from other areas! ) would be taking the stage to perform with these heroes of rock.

First up to take the stage was Lord Bishop of Lord Bishop Rocks. I cannot stress the diversity of this show enough, especially in the case of getting to hear this upbeat 70’s influenced rock. The charismatic Lord Bishop played well with the musicians of Waltari, and the effect was an intro to the night that spoke purely of the good times ahead.
