Gruesome Posts New Music Video

Old-school death metal squad Gruesome just shared a savage new music video for the title track from forthcoming EP, "Dimensions Of Horror." Gruesome's Matt Harvey comments:

"For our first foray into the realm of video, we are very stoked to give you the title track of our new EP, Dimensions Of Horror.

"The video, much like everything we've done with Gruesome, harkens back to a simpler time, when you could reliably find a guy with a mustache kicking back on the hood of his Trans Am blasting 'Master Of Puppets' in the parking lot of your local 7-11. A time when mullets and latch-key kids roamed lands gripped with 'Satanic Panic,' and you could still buy acid at high school. Yes, the 1980s.

"Those were the days when Chuck Schuldiner's individual thought patterns turned toward mutilation and rituals involving zombies. We hope that this proudly 'B' video grips you with fear, or at least makes you nostalgic for the halcyon days of big white high-tops, bigger hair, and first generation of death metal. So come with us and enter the dimensions of horror." More...

Gruesome Posts New Track "Raped By Darkness"

"Raped By Darkness," the new single from Gruesome's forthcoming EP "Dimensions Of Horror," has just premiered online and can be heard below. Issues guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey of the track:

"'Raped by Darkness' is another tune that has its origins in the 'Horror' section of the video rental places that dotted the landscape of the mid-1980s like zits on a teenage metalhead's face. When I was nine or ten-years-old, it was a never-ending ordeal to convince someone's parent or guardian to rent R-rated, or even better, unrated, horror movies for me and my friends to watch.

"Sometimes I would just browse the aisles and be captivated by the cover art for movies like Street Trash, Future Kill, and Basket Case, which I never actually got to see until much later. Despite, or maybe because of, their limited availability, I lived for gory flicks like The Toxic Avenger, Re-Animator, Hellraiser, and Evil Dead, which is what this song is based around.

"In the tradition of great death metal cuts like Dead By Dawn, and the oh-so-subtle Evil Dead, this is an ode to Sam Raimi's horror masterpiece, but ours is lyrically centered around one particular scene - the infamous 'tree rape' bit. The music is, of course, directly modeled after our raison d'etre, Death, particularly the 'Scream Bloody Gore' era that this EP is centered around. More...

Gruesome Streaming "Forces Of Death"

The death metal disciples from Gruesmeon - the best metal newcomer of 2015 and featuring within its punishing ranks current and former members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation, and Derketa - just shared the first new song, "Forces Of Death," from upcoming EP, "Dimensions Of Horror."

Elaborates guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey of the track: "We're totally psyched to bring you the first track from our new EP. This record, 'Dimensions Of Horror,' delves deeper into the roots of our favorite Floridian, Chuck Schuldiner, and revisits the days of Scream Bloody Gore and the numerous Death demos.

"We wanted to do something rawer, nastier and more primitive than 'Savage Land' and we hope you guys enjoy it and get into that gutter-level, early death metal head-space with us. So as you listen, close your eyes, imagine that you just got home from high school in 1987, ditched your Mongoose bike and ejected your brand new None Shall Defy cassette out of your Walkman to check your mailbox.

"Inside, there's a sixty-minute TDK tape in the mail from an overseas pen pal with the Insanity 1985 rehearsal on one side and a dub of this new 'mini-LP' on the other. You steal some of your dad's beer, light up a joint before your parents get home and pop this bad boy in the stereo while you watch a worn out, second generation VHS dub of The Beyond on mute on a 125-pound television. Now you're ready to enter the dimensions of horror and enlist in the forces of death." More...

Best New Metal Bands Of 2015 Explored

Every year our annual staff awards include a vote for the best new metal band to arrive with a debut full-length. To make the cut, these fresh young outfits have to blow us away and remind us why we love this genre to begin with.

There were a horde of bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category in 2015, and ultimately the title went to U.S. outfit Gruesome, who happened to be in my list of contender.

Since our focus is on helping metal fans find new bands, we're going to take a closer look at all the bands who were in contention for the award, starting with my personal top bands. Here's the 5 groups who just got started in 2015 that you should be getting into as the new year begins:

Alkaloid

Fans of Obscura and Blotted Science got an unexpected treat this year when several members of prominent European metal bands came together to release a new album under the banner of Alkaloid. Totally forgoing the label route altogether, Alkaloid's debut self release features the talents of names such as Linus Klausenitzer, Hannes Grossmann, and Christian Münzner.

As might be expected by a band with that sort of pedigree, “The Malkuth Grimoire” is an absolute monster of a release (check out our review here). It's technical, it's progressive, it's melodic, and it's even a little gothic. The end result is some very top notch death metal with a sound you aren't going to hear elsewhere, and it absolutely demands a follow-up release!

You can follow Alkaloid at Facebook here and stream all of the stellar debut full-length album “The Malkuth Grimoire” below.

The Best And Worst Of Metal In 2015

We've almost got another year in the bag, so it's time to take a look back at all that went down throughout 2015 in the world of heavy metal.

This was an uneven year featuring both highs and lows, and metal didn't escape the drama frequent in other styles of music at all in the last 12 months. Echoing previous schisms in famous black metal bands, Immortal finally took its turn imploding and split into two, and this was probably the worst year in recent memory for U.S. metal tours.

On the flip side of that, a solid number of amazing albums saw release, and metal also catapulted to the top of the charts with some major releases that made people outside the underground take notice.

After two solid years dominated by reunions and reboots, it looks like that craze is finally winding down. This year most notably we saw the return of Faith No More with “Sol Invictus,” but on the more underground end industrial black metal outfit Diabolicum also came back with a first album in 14 years. Although not quite on the same scale of time, Arcturus finally returned with a new full-length after a decade's waiting.

While there are less surprise reunions announced for the coming year, there is one classic outfit hitting the road to take note of, as Black Sabbath's “final” tour - dubbed The End - runs through most of 2016 across the globe. While we wait to see what's in store in the coming year, first we'll look back at everything that went down throughout 2015.

The Good: The Best Of Metal In 2015

Both Slayer and Lamb Of God ended up topping the charts with their latest albums (with Lamb Of God even getting nominated for a Grammy). It's not often a metal album hits #2 in the world, but Slayer managed to do it. While not everyone loved the album, the exposure alone is good for the genre overall.

But how was the more underground metal? Simply put: pretty killer, if you knew were to look. There was a solid mix of great albums from long time bands like Amorphis, Cattle Decapitation, Enslaved, and Soilwork, as well as excellent material from newer and less prolific groups like Alkaloid, Tribulation, and Lychgate.

The tried and true classic outfits from Cradle Of Filth to Iron Maiden to My Dying Bride made appearances, and there were some seriously ambitious undertakings (Swallow The Sun released a TRIPLE album). A handful of bands that were already solid managed to really outdo themselves with stellar material this year though, including Subterannean Masquerade, Code, Shining, and Melechesh. More...

Gruesome Enters The Studio

Gruesome - Florida's modern purveyors of old school death metal - has entered the studio to begin working on a new EP titled "Dimensions of Horror."

The band will record this material at New Constellation RMP Studios with engineer Jarrett Pritchard in Orlando, FL. The album will once again feature artwork from the legendary Ed Repka (Death, Megadeth) and will see a release via Relapse in 2016. Gruesome had this to say:

"This fall we'll be heading to Chuck's hometown of Orlando to start working on our upcoming release. For this one, we've dug even deeper into the roots of our favorite Floridians Death, with some lewd, rude and crude death metal. It's gonna be nasty and raw and I can't wait to see what returning cover artist Ed Repka comes up for this one! This record is designed to be cranked on cassette in your I-ROC Z and totally piss off the PMRC, if those were still things that happened."

Gruesome's return to the studio follows the band's first live performances, including appearances at Full Terror Assault Fest and Obscene Extreme America. The band has also been confirmed for both Maryland Deathfest 2016 and the first-ever Netherlands Deathfest next February in Tilburg. More...

Gruesome pays homage to death metal's most celebrated founding American acts, Death. Gruesome Posts Lyric Video

Death-adoring metal collective Gruesome continues to floor the masses with the Schuldiner saluting album "Savage Land." Today a lyric video comes online for the band's namesake track - check it out below.

Boasting a powerhouse cast of characters with members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation, and Derketa, Gruesome pays its respects to death metal's most celebrated founding American act, Death, in a way that's at once familiar but refreshing; an addictively punishing exhibition of late-'80s/early-'90s Florida-styled death metal that keeps the true sound and spirit of Chuck Schuldiner alive and well. Gruesome Covers Slayer

The cast of Gruesome (the Schuldiner-hailing collective featuring members of Exhumed, Possessed, Malevolent Creation and Derketa) today untethers a very special cover of Slayer's "Black Magic."

The band's reconfiguration of the old-school appears on the deluxe digital edition of the band's "Savage Land" full-length.

"We chose our cover tunes the same way we tried to write the album," relays guitarist/vocalist Matt Harvey. "We just did what Chuck [Schuldiner] would have done. Death was never a band particularly known for their cover song repertoire, but they did occasionally close their set with a rendition of 'Black Magic' and it's a cover that dates as far back as an old 1984 Death/Mantas rehearsal, so we felt it would be appropriate. We were considering 'The Exorcist' by Possessed, since Death started recording a cover of it during Individual Thought Patterns, but since [Gruesome guitarist] Dan [Gonzalez] is in Possessed, it was a bit weird. Again, we tried to approach the song as Death doing a Slayer cover, so... hopefully we came close to the mark."

Raise your horns to Gruesome's take on Slayer's "Black Magic," currently streaming below. You can also hear all of Gruesome's new album over at this location. More...
