Desertfest London 2024: Day 1
London, one of the most famous cities in the world, as well as one of the busiest. It has a rich history of everything from engineering to finance, language and of course, music. It may be the furthest thing from a desert one can get without going to Scandinavia or the South Pole, but the Desertfest event has become an essential trip for fans of doom, sludge and stoner metal, as well as heavy blues and naturally, desert rock. It attracts some of the biggest and best names in these fields and makes the busy streets of Camden bearable for a few days. This year, the festival was celebrating its eleventh edition and raised a few eyebrows for hosting some bands that may not spring to mind when one thinks of Desertfest, but nonetheless promised to bang some heads after turning them.
Those lucky enough to attend the first day had some special treats in store for them. Just down the road from Camden tube station lies Raven Records, a small but very cool store dedicated to metal music and today they had none other than Orange Goblin visiting, who were giving fans a first listen of their brand new album, "Science, Not Fiction" (spoiler alert: it rules!) as well as taking photos and signing posters. While not officially part of the Desertfest schedule, the band has played at the event three times, including the very first in 2012, so it was right up attendees' street.
Speaking of which, Desertfest welcomed a very special guest for a Q&A session on Denmark Street, in the Black Heart, one of several venues in use over the weekend; former Black Sabbath singer Tony Martin. Promoting the remasters of the Sabbath records he sang on (with the exception of "The Eternal Idol,") the singer was warm and humble, explaining to eager fans how he joined the band, the surrealism of the band's first show in Moscow and the confusion caused by the involvement of Body Count's Ernie C on the "Forbidden" album. After a thoroughly entertaining talk, he hung around to sign autographs and take pictures with fans, making time for everyone who wanted to speak with him. A phenomenal voice and a lovely person, let's hope he's finally going to get the recognition he deserves with the re-release of these albums. More...

Wake Signs With Metal Blade Records
Relentless transformation, aggression, and transcendence have written the script for Canadian metallers Wake. Since their formation in 2009, they've released numerous EPs and singles, plus five full-lengths - touring the world in support of it. Now, for their upcoming sixth album [set to be recorded in July 2021 with producer Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Archspire)], Wake has joined forces with Metal Blade Records, marking a new chapter for the quintet.
Wake comments: "All of us in Wake have had a lot of regard both for Metal Blade and for the bands on its roster from any era. An endless stream of Metal Blade artists have been played in our van during any number of tours. For us, playing music has always been something that we've tried to do on our own terms and with our own vision. We've explored a lot of ground musically, and that was influenced by the history that Metal Blade was there to write. So, we're very excited to say that we've joined up with Metal Blade.
"Expect a lot more noise from our camp in the near future."
Wake's latest full-length, "Devouring Ruin," was featured on several "best of 2020" lists (including Decibel Magazine, Exclaim!, BrooklynVegan, among others); soon after its release, the group dropped their "Confluence" EP, once again to critical acclaim. Theories Kicking Off North American Tour
Seattle-based death grind faction Theories will kick of a fifteen-date North American tour next week alongside Wake and Vermin Womb.
Slated to commence October 18th in Reno, Nevada and run through November 3rd in Victoria, British Columbia, the trek includes an appearance at this year's Southwest Terror Fest in Tucson, Arizona. Comments drummer Joe Axler:
"We will be hitting the road with -- in our opinion -- two of the top of the game current grind bands around right now: Canada's Wake and Denver's Vermin Womb, both devastatingly sick bands. We will be debuting a handful of new songs on this tour that we've never toured with before, all of them going in a new direction for Theories; still grindy and brutal but more mature musically, focused more on intricate and driving riffs, devastating beats, and more well-rounded, all over the place vocal attack. We're excited to watch y'all destroy the room while we play these new ones!" More...
