Malevolence Provides Track-By-Track Breakdown For New Album "Antithetical"

Portugal's Malevolence is back after a 13 year hiatus to bring on seven tracks of extreme metal madness with new album "Antithetical."
To give fans a taste of what's to come, Malevolence recently released opening track "Slithering" over at bandcamp, and now we have scored an exclusive track-by-track breakdown and interview straight from the band. Front man Carlos Cariano offered the following explanations of the impending "Antithetical" experience:
Slithering is the first in many levels. It’s the audio episode inaugurating the album. It’s the first single extracted! It’s the first (ever) video from Antithetical and Malevolence as a band (soon to be revealed). This episode of Antithetical standing alone from the rest of the project represents a conceptual and intense view addressing the radical eradication of all the spiritual and impious structures slinking over the earth. The central thought behind the song showcases the power of individual comprehension versus piercing faith. The ideal opening salvo and the audio weapon already defibrillating rave reviews all over the place.
Cult of the Everlasting
There’s a myriad of cults randomly among us and at effortless offering! This one is an ironic bite on people following cults (those not related with religions) just to feel integrated on the social quadrants. Man does by means of persistence have the ability to stop to think instead of always dramatizing about everything. Without individuality all comes with the same taste, odor and smell by following the same cult (that is not everlasting). If everything is too much the same and is overlapping, too much the same it’s not the same. There is no hope in following something, something we are not!
Drawing a parallel between wars while linking the precedent atrocities known to men with the present state of destruction of everything that is natural and the pandemonium that is about to come. This audio episode verses about solid facts depicting the irony of ARBEIT MACHT FREI with the flagellation brought to the world by the Nazi regime. The way people were DEVOURED in much UNLIMITED ways (violation of the human rights). Yet mankind has not learned from past mistakes and keeps on doing exactly the same nowadays. The lead play changed name but the role models keep on devouring massively. There is a parallel about atrocities mocking on Adolph Christ and Jesus Hitler! What are the odds?
The audio episode that grows in every direction. Much like life, the sun erects everyday between the lies and then he dies. Antithetical, the album title track is probably one of the most intense slabs of extremity contained within. On a very progressive level we depict the trivialization of the social context, increasing meaningless via the rhetoric of innovation that only uses the power of language (when it’s already too late). It’s very easy to speak and make predictions once everything is real. Ironically adequate humankind loves to live while suffocating in their projected and contrasting lies.
Equilibrium In Extremis
The parallelism we build using totalitarian regimes in comparison with the idea that all living beings are born with the same chances under the earth’s radar. Chances often twisted and bemused with life equilibrium. Life is based in extremes but life needs stable balance, life needs neutral symmetry! It means OUR heart beat! The fruits that man sows be it in the field of action of thought will be harvested at a particular time and place. There is no law of nature that ensures that mankind should be joyful! That joyfulness and equilibrium must be sought and built.
Fifteen billion humans alive in the solar system interacting, interrelated forming a complex culture. Exocortex represents an episode with three distinct moments. With the turbulence of the daily routine humans act like ants elapsing, evolving, expanding and adapting. With such modus operandi they forget the true MOMENTUM of our lives. They forget about dreaming and breeding conveniently. Through this song there is the chance to relax, dream and even think of alternatives. Yet by returning to earth’s soil, time is still moving forward as a universal image and we engage in the same sustainability erosion mode. This audio episode comes out with our first (ever) take on our National musical heritage. Not available anywhere else in the Globe! Prepare for proper Portuguese music! Positively bringing the best from our race this is our first intervention on constructing an epic journey. We MUST (not end!) We WILL (not end!) WE!
Mechanisms of Destructive Behavior
Destructive behaviour usually reflects a level of boredom and an ability to satisfy a behavioural need under high levels of appropriate enrichment. Reflecting experiments and the violation of human forms that is swallowing similar life forms to advance in evolution (under forcible expulsion). Controversial consequences, permanent biofeedback, perplexing pain all leading to an incomprehensible assault where among individuals and species men monopolizes other men.
After seeing these descriptions of the tracks I wanted to delve a little deeper into this follow-up to the 1999 album "Martyrialized," and the members of Antithetical were kind enough to do a mini-interview about the long stretch in-between releases and the themes of the album. Below you can see what the Portuguese metallers had to say about the term "progressive" and find out about the process of creating the album's artwork.
xFiruath: This is the band's first new studio work in something like 13 years - what caused that long period of inactivity and how has that down time affected the creation of this music?
Malevolence has been active throughout all that time. We constantly have to balance our extreme daily work routines with our music pursuits. Contrary to what one might think this lengthy period between official releases had a completely positive result on the final outcome. It gave us the tools to mature the songs throughout all the process projecting the music beyond all our initial expectations. We don’t consider this interlude as a down time period. Thinking in reverse we acknowledge this as specific moments in time that were absolutely necessary to focus energy into writing the best thing we’ve ever done.
xFiruath: The description of the "Slithering" single addresses the concept of eradicating the "spiritual and impious" structures slinking over the earth. Can you delve a bit more into what is meant by that, and what spiritual structures are worthy of such eradication?
The actual estimate says there are more than 4,200 religions in the world and every day we see people getting attracted and conquered by the narratives, the symbols, the traditions and the sacred histories that are intended to give meaning to life. Our manifestation is not against the core code of spiritual structures. We: as realistic, We: as tolerant, respect the cultural codes, the system of beliefs and above everything: individual lifestyle. But when the world turns into a more depressive and intolerable place to live via the language of contradiction propelled by religious cults generating religious wars, “Slithering” then fires on all cylinders as our artistic refusal to that defilement. In that sense we defend the individual (positive) energy to clash against such deceitful principles. The structures worth of eradication are the intolerable systems, no matter if they are supported by angelology or demonology theories (or whatever…). Those producing more filth into our lives! Religions are intended to give meaning to life, but 99.9% of the time they just generate death and destruction. That is a Thesis, worth of remarkable Antithesis, to generate a Synthesis, replicating a new form of critical thinking among the living.
xFiruath: What is the primary concept of "Antithetical?"
Musical accomplishments, revolutions and groundbreaking ideas are great, but at the end of the day music remains about emotions and those records you hear over and over. This album is our most determined concept as we have been able to amalgamate each song complementing each other to create a powerful soundtrack bond throughout all the songs. We tried this in the past with some great points but with some shortcoming results. In scope “Antithetical” demonstrates a comprehensive look to many backgrounds, environments and personal experiences. Not to be confused with a paradox, the main theme of “Antithetical” illustrates a razor-sharp concept inspired from Ancient Greek Etymology (1580s, from Gk. Antithetikos). On every song we are reflecting diametrical opposition to a number of given propositions around the globe while erecting with a divergent thought. This does not mean we are the Anti (against) every Thesis (position) known worldwide. We are just expressing ourselves via the Art of Conflict demonstrating opposition towards the relativity of many Thesis under expression. An opposition based in the concept of the three elements of the Hegelian dialectic: Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis. We think inner strength and living values nowadays are negatively base underneath relative truths. Thus we are expressing ourselves precisely antithetically whilst insisting on critical thinking. Through the album we are creating parallelisms to simplify extremes whilst apprehending both the positive and the negative perspectives of existence, erecting with the synthesis that transcends both.
xFiruath: What was the writing process like for this album, and when were these songs written?
This time we did not work under a deadline and that helped the work flow. We spent long time thinking about details and now it all makes sense for a lot of reasons. Projecting, writing and recording this album was the most rewarding and meaningful project. It really comes down to us experimenting and trying new things to see what best serves our needs. When I came out with the concept we all felt intuitively that project antithetical had a lot of potential. We have not changed our writing approach and there is no strict formula to write. When we feel positive, or at least “illuminate,” on a certain music structure we know it’s time to let it live. As I produced the entire record and because we had our own control over the recording (studio facility of our keyboardist/programmer), we also had more time to use asymmetric time signatures on our song structures to eschew the typical. We incorporated odder synthesizer programming and more sound effects to give birth to a more layered and complex instrumentation. A number of compositions are way longer this time. The songs were written thinking in various themes, but they came out as a unified statement. That statement is the “Antithetical” catalyst transformed using unusual sorts of experimentation.
xFiruath: What does the term "progressive" mean to you in regards to metal, and how does Malevolence's music earn that description?
Malevolence could not be what it is without the musical intensity and the extreme blend of other music styles we absorb. Everything converges to mix into one extreme progressive metal setting. The music of Malevolence possesses a distinctive expression since our inception, morphing enough to allow for nearly unlimited surprises. On “Martyrialized,” we found the greatest acceptance all over the globe and it was assumed that the band had done all that it could do (being ahead of many contemporaries). Press normally had trouble in genre defining our work since it came out beyond the traditional stereotypes, but they loved it. We as individuals are not attached to any particular sub-genre and that’s what makes us break traditional boundaries by bringing in a greater and more eclectic range of influences. We work under free-form and experimental compositional methods, as well as bringing in new technological innovations. We as a band still dwell in the extreme, rawer and minimalistic structures but there is always an urge to fuse styles without restrictions. That is maybe one of the reasons why people keep coming back and often categorizing our music with that progressive sub-genre.
xFiruath: What role does the artwork play in the overall feel of the new album, and how do you translate that theme of the album into the visual medium?
This record was a gigantic project and required a lot of attention to a lot of details. To be honest, and as this album will set the tone for the rest of our career, the project including the music, the lyrics and the imagery, all had to unify into one. To illustrate that we needed a very striking piece that would portray the central album theme fueled by the extreme art of conflict. Hope is antithetical to despair and KKSTRUCTURES in straight involvement with us twisted an eye catching visual parallelism dissecting the antithetical contrasts between the positive and negative extremes. The way KKSTRUCTURES incorporated the distinction between the lighter and the darker side of the planet while ripping both with the fire combustion, perfectly epitomizes the universal purification (in need) we sustain. We translate this in the visual medium with better songs and a better performance. This is the extension of what we are trying to do musically, but at the same time, we are so confident in our artistic expression and writing that we know we have been above all what we have done before. The surprises far outnumber the expectations and we hope people will have as much fun with the results as we all did in the process.
