The egg crate boxes placed there are no different than hanging an egg sandwich on the wall. It's done by people who have a poorly built home studio and need a cheap solution to look professional. Some think it dampens the room for mixing purposes, but at that level it's irrelevent.
Professional studio foam is engineered as a dense foam which absorbs audible frequencies. There's a lot more that goes in to treating a room with acoustics. Diffusion and absorption play a large role, and should be done properly.
It doesn't mean they will have a bad sounding mix by any means. I actually have a lot of respect for this band. It's just a waste of time and space to hang stuff like that.
