He didn't really quit. He joined Avenged Sevenfold for a tour... well do I have to say anymore. That's enough of a reason to search for a new drummer. But I think Dream Theater kind of took that as he was quitting, because when Portnoy tried to come back to the band they wouldn't let him.

He did quit. Or he wanted them to take a break, the others didn't, so then he saw no other option than quiting. Him parting away with DT has nothing to do with Avenged Sevenfold.
