Bassist Jeroen Thesseling of German technical death metal act Obscura was recently interview by Peta2 regarding his stance on vegetarianism. An excerpt from the interview follows:
Peta2: What prompted you to become vegetarian? Were there any bands, books, etc. that influenced your decision?
Jeroen: I decided to become a vegetarian about 16 years ago at that age when young people become aware and conscious of their decisions and the world in general, about life and what you want to stand for. Also some people around me were already vegetarian which stimulated me to make the same step. Moreover, I have great respect for nature and animals in general. The decision to never eat meat again was natural and logical.
Peta2: What are some of your favorite vegetarian foods?
Jeroen: I love Italian cuisine. For me it is the most tasteful food, with endless meatless possibilities; and best to enjoy with a glass (or bottle) of Italian red wine. I also like Indian food from time to time.
Peta2: Of all of the major animal rights issues (factory farming, dog fighting, animal testing, the fur industry, animals in entertainment, etc.) are there any issues that are particularly close to your heart?
Jeroen: All are. However, the issue I am directly confronted with on a daily basis is factory farming and supermarkets filled with cheap meat consumed by ignorant people who never wonder what suffering went before, nor the environmental damage it's causing.
