hmmmmmmm. just spent the last 3 hours listening to it a few times (no on gayspace dont worry, i torrented) and i gotta tell ya im a bit torn. like its great music and im SURE im gonna be in love with it next time i trip, but almost all the heaviness is gone. not one scream on the whole album, barely any Metal riffs, mostely just real slow spacey stuff. its actually much more of a psychedelic rock album. Being a fan of Hendrix and such its right down my ally for Rock n' Roll, but not "the most important METAL album of the year" like Rolling Stone claims in its review.

I found (with a few listens) that many of the heavier riffs are buried in the longer songs. While it does seem to lack the stomp of their earlier stuff everything they have said about the album so far seems to hold true. The move toward a more classic prog sound, the slower songs with more of a build-up. I think the band has been pretty honest about the processes behind it, at least.
It seems very layered and dense. It's taken me a few listens to get the "feel" of it all. Although I am with you Decay, being a fan of classic prog myself, this is right up my alley. Although I wonder what the fans of Mastodon's harsher elements will think of it.

I like harsher Mastodon but I also like the progretion of their music. Like I said I listened to the songs and while you find less heavy riffs in there, I tohught that the songs where great. Sometimes when a group evolves, they loose some fans, keep some and find some more. The musicianship is excellent as well. A definitive yes in my case.

i was a bit scared to hear they were going for a more prog/classic rock direction, but i can admit i was wrong! i love this album, its really good.
and Decay, there are so screams... listen to Crack The Skye and the opening and the outro have a couple screams,
now listening to: Cielo Drive - Car Bomb

Yeah there are some screams but not that much compare to other albums. But I was afraid I would miss them but the vocals on this new album just fit with the songs and I forgot about the screams. Seriously it's going to be a strong contender for album of the year...

I'd say this is probably my fav Metal release this year (so far), followed by Lamb Of God's Wrath.... and Head's Save me from myself (okay okay, the only true metal album of the 3 is Wrath, but anyway...) Not a bad start for 2009. And I'm glad there arent that many screams on this one, as that was kinda annoying me on Blood Mountain. But its a matter of taste anyway

Wow this album is really awesome! The Last Baron is definitely my favorite track. It seems to really encompass the whole Mastodon sound. At times the vocals really remind me of OZZY which is super cool. As much as I like it I'm not sure If I like it better than Blood Mountain. Only time will tell with an album like this. I generally download torrents but I actually went out and bought this one. The last album I actually paid for was 10,000 days. I guess I just like all the trippy artwork. Crack the Skye has some very cool art.

The Ozzy influence was evident throughout Blood Mountain as well. Glad to see others caught on to that. The Czar is like a little "Stairway" to Mastodon. Love the breakdown & vocals in that song.
I do agree with RM/Demon about a heavy opener; but, as a fan of legible lyrics, I'm pleased with their progression. Great album!

I made a comment in a previous thread about whether Isis or Mastodon would get more play from me this year...I was leaning towards Isis from past experience. All I've gotta say is Isis has some catching up to do at this point (which I'm confident in). If they top Crack the Skye, it's gonna be one helluva year for Metal in my opinion with an already strong start.

These guys are such a great band! I've been non-stop listening to all their records this week. It's really hard to pick a favorite. I love how Blood Mountain is nice and groovy and quite a bit harder than Crack the Skye. Yet Crack the Skye has to be one the best progressive albums I've ever heard, It's without a doubt their most epic. Initially it took me a while to actually get into Mastodon. They've got such a unique sound which I found a little odd at first, but man have they grown on me! \m/

I bought "Crack the Skye" the other day and it's been in my car's CD player since. Some people were disappointed to hear their shift to a more classic/prog sound, but I think they did a great job and I love it. Album of the year for me so far. But keep in mind it's only March.
