Heavy Metal Making A Cautious Comeback In Egypt
The mostly black-clad crowd goes wild in a frenzy of slam dancing to the music of heavy metal band Black Sabbath, played by Egyptian rockers on a placid bank of the Nile river.
Heavy metal musicians and fans, once branded as dangerous Satanists by the Cairo government, are making a quiet comeback in deeply conservative Egypt, where they are trying to avoid missteps that sent heavy metal to the gallows in the mid-1990s.
It has taken heavy metal artists and fans years to crawl back to the limelight and in the meantime a new generation of rockers has emerged, playing safe and imposing self-censorship to avoid accusations of devil worship.
Moanis Salem, 28, whose band Invaders was formed in 2006, said he has had no problems with the police or complaints from the cultural centre.
"We are not playing tracks of a blasphemous nature or glorifying Satan. We are not seeking trouble," he said. Salem, who has also played with homegrown band Divine, said the new generation of rockers was fortunate to have the Internet to communicate with fans.
But he regretted the low turnout at concerts, which are mostly held at the Sawy Cultural Wheel on Zamalek, a Nile island close to downtown Cairo.
"Now we use the Internet to communicate with people, announce times of concerts and share our music with fans but to tell you the truth old is gold. Thousands used to rock in. Not any more. The largest crowd we had in Sawy Centre was 350 fans."
Arabic-speaking Egypt is not naturally heavy metal-friendly territory and the genre draws small audiences. Arabic songs and Western pop and rap stars are more popular.
In the 1990s, heavy metal concerts took place regularly and were packed with screaming fans, mostly wealthy or upper middle class youth. Homegrown bands such as Steel Edge, Cartoon Killers and Andromeda shot to prominence. But that stopped when police arrested scores of heavy metal fans in 1997, including some who languished in jails for weeks over accusations they belonged to a Satanic cult aimed at spreading drugs and sexual freedom.

I'm glad Metal music is slowly making a 'comeback' but I find it extremely saddening that fans/bands have to hide from the past. Certain countries are not very metal friendly, always pointing their fingers: they are scared of anything different. Metal fans/bands go through some rough times in places like that.
All I can say is that I love Metal even more knowing that people are willing to keep great music around even if it's not accepted. Plus, it also goes to show how lucky I am to wear a Metal shirt in public without having people yell at me.

F.A.N., I agree with your sentiment, but you have to put it into perspective as everything is relative. If self-censorship (which I didn't read is necessarily what's happening here) is needed to get their art accepted or put on live shows at all, then it's a smart move for those bands to some degree. There is a fine line to be tread while upholding one's integrity, but I feel it can be done. Just putting on heavy metal shows is pushing the envolope over there to some degree. Then they can push it more from there until one day someone goes too far and the government cracks down on the entire scene that's built up.
The Internet changes the scenario a little, but not really for bands who want to play their music live for heavy metal fans in their own countries.

Playing Sabbath covers is no doubt on the same extreme line of society in Egypt that metal bands like Death and Deicide pushed in the west.

Monkeys and humans both evolved from the same line of primates. But they experienced different food sources, events, habitats etc so evolved differently. Intelligence no doubt came at a more exponential speed as we became the dominant species so there is a significant difference. Evolution takes an incredibly long time, all species are undergoing the act of evolution as they breed and die, experiencing the survival of the fittest.
Where did monkeys come from? All species are the tips of branches on a massive tree spanning hundreds of millions of years. Each evolved from further down the tree, right down to the first living organism. Again, listening in school or wikipedia may be of help.

How can you say monkeys aren't evolving? You can teach a monkey to do ANYTHING. That's evolution right there. The Human raced evolved into what we are today simply through pure adaptation i.e. climate, food scarcity etc. The theory of evolution is the most reliable answer, especially considering the alternatives . Human DNA is 98.4 percent identical to the DNA of chimpanzees. You can't ignore that. That being said, there are many more theories of evolution besides just the one. A personal favourite of mine is the Toba catastrophe theory. Approx. 70k-80k years ago a super volcanic event occurred at lake Toba causing the worlds population to decrease to anywhere between 1,000 to 10,000 people. The explosion was approx 4.2 ZJ in power. This eruption could have caused large environmental changes (i.e. global temperature drop [Ice Age]) and caused population bottlenecks ,which, in turn, accelerated differentiation of the isolated human populations causing most of all the other "human" species to be wiped out except for Neanderthals and Humans.
Even if you don't like that at least read into the reconstruction of the Neanderthal genome.

My wife left college after 2 years because she wanted to actually become a school teacher, which is admirable, buit was a waste of time on her part and she freely admits it was. Her reasonings for this are simple...she went to a college in North Carolina for the first year and the professor didnt teach...just spouted hippie bullsh** and didnt care whether it was helping her to be able to teach young kids...so she chose to give a shot one more year and tranfer her credits to a school back in connecticut...low and behold....different professor, same old indoctrination hippie leftist tree hugging bullsh** opinions and no real curriculam....now dont get me wrong...i love trees and they especially look nice when people chop thousands of them down to rot in the livingrooms of people to celebrate an unfounded holiday...but i digress.
So now all my wife has is 16,000 dollars in student loans and no real knowledge of being a school teacher......these college kids learn nothing and pay for the same sh** i learned in 12 years of regular school. Unless your going to be a doctor or some a$$ kissing upper mgt type that just follows the corporate angles, then sure drink for 4 years and get a degree....otherwise its a waste....My wife is proud that i took the money i was suposed to go to college on and bought a house and property and now have no mortgage worries because i didnt bother to listen to typical people who feel that college is so great.

But I also know how much easier it has become due to advances in farming technology and genetic engineering and fertilizer development, all of which came from the quaternary sector, paid for largely by tertiary sector taxes.

Well my last posts I made I made pretty drunk and just said whatever came to my mind. And to be 100% honest, I just got back from work and was too lazy to read the last 4-5 posts. But a few things I did pick up on were KORNDOGG and TimW's views on mill workers etc and the negativity towards computers and technology. The fact is, "your kind" are almost a dieing breed. Every single day, life in the west is becoming more and more automated and inevitably ignorant. With advancement in technology and the like you won't have to be cutting lumber or bending sheet metal all day.
