Unlikely Xasthur Shout Out: Part 1 Redux
Hydra Head Records has posted their reactions to yet another shout out to Xasthur from Ryan Adams. Here's what they had to say:
"That Ryan Adams guy just gets better and better...first he gave Xasthur a shout out in the NYTimes, and now in the new issue of Blender he's listed off his 13 favorite metal tracks...and, yep, you guessed it...he listed Xasthur on there. And at 13 no less! We're still not entirely sure what his music sounds like (although we are fairly certain it does not sound like Xasthur) but we are inching closer and closer to buying a record of his. Or maybe just illegally downloading it AND THEN buying it. Either way, we're going to check him out. Can some one put us in touch with him? Seriously. We want to send him the new Xasthur 2xLP that comes out next month!"
Here's what he says in the new Blender:
13. "The Prison of Mirrors," Xasthur
"I imagine a sad demon who just broke up with his demon girlfriend, and he's sitting on a big ash pile with his 'Dear Demonic John' letter going, 'Fuuuuck!' Then again, if you're making black metal that good, you probably don't have a girlfriend."

Music doesn't need to be technically accomplished or played well to be good, I mean look at Mutiilation or something.
I prefer Malefic's vocals, thats just me. But I enjoy Leviathan as well. Maybe for me Leviathan are closer to the Norwegian progenitors of bm, having some stuff which is more uptempo etc. whereas I like Xasthur's washed out approach.

Yeah but do you really think Xasthur cares about getting in the New York Times. I'm sure he want's to be doing Calvin Klein commercials next. Can you imagine a black and white advert with him standing under a rope with the voice over "suicide by Calvin Klein. Then again there has been a KFC black metal advert so it wouldn't surprise me.

Trust me Hydrahead don't care about this news, why do you think they have such particular bands and artists on there label. Also Aaron Turner has mentioned in so many interviews that when he had full control of the label he wanted to keep it underground, and out of the lime light. If they wanted to sell out they would have done it ages ago. Hydrahead make you think there interested because it seems to be the Hip thing to do at the moment. Just like this crappy Rock singer saying he likes Xasthur. I've also heard that Cameron Diaz likes Cannibal Corpse now that's bigger news plus she's hot.

ryan adams is an alt country singer. fine. to me xasthur speaks to a certain type of person. let it be known that ryan adams is someone who dates celebrities, whines about love all the time and last but not least did a f***ing GAP jeans commercial. im sure that Scott/Malefic gives less than a f*** about the opinions of such a person, positive or negative. im so sick of people name dropping Xasthur for always the wrong reason. im willing to bet none of any of these indie, hardcore, death metal, scene sucking morons have ever actually LISTENED to what is contained on a Xasthur record. as for people saying Xasthur is too repetitive, unskilled and boring: you dont hear Xasthur, you never will, so why are you wasting your time. isnt Marduk or Immortal playing somewhere??? go waste your time on that sh**.

Trust me I hear Xasthur, but the only time I have listened to his material was when I was depressed. Actually his stuff is quite liberating, I used to own Violate The Oblivious on vinyl and used to get drunk and go into a trance.
Thanks for the comment Cynic.

Xasthur is awesome, Leviathan is awesome but more black and less depressing. Its weird the first time I ever listened to Xasthur it felt like I was going to go into a trance.
Khanate I love that band man. Pretty much everything I've heard by Stephen O'Malley has been awesome. Too bad that Burning Witch is not one of those things by him I've heard.

Khanate are so innovative though, but yeah Burning Witch shred. "Cynic" You should check out this Australian Doom band called Whitehorse there pretty cool a bit like BW. Also if you like Xasthur check out Tasmanian Black Metaller Striborg, I personally think his sound is alot more depressing than Xasthur and the vocals even kick Leviathans ass.
