Black Sabbath Guitarist To Be Honoured in Birmingham Ceremony

Tony Iommi is to be added to the Walk Of Stars in Birmingham.
The Aston-born Black Sabbath guitarist will have his name added to the Broad Street walk on November 23 in a ceremony led by Kerrang! Radio DJ Johnny Doom.
"It’s really an honour," says Iommi. "It’s so nice being recognised by your hometown."

Hello there children....
I normally wear a hat or beanie of some sort.... a shaved head tends to get mighty cold around here... So, I dont generally go out in public with the head uncovered., hence the reason,
I chose to focus on the inkwork rather than that shiny head, when cropping the pic for my avatar;-)
Ive been an Iommi fan since I first heard Black Sabbath music as a kid in about 75-76... I was 6-7 yrs old..., it was being played on my oldest brothers 8track player in his bedroom ... thats the same place that I heard others from his collection of music... like Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Montrose, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Kiss..AC/DC.....etc
Within a couple years of that I had my first guitar and have been a metalhead ever since.... and after all these years.....
Tony Iommi still ranks among the elite when it comes to guitarists in my opinion..!
Jenny- shouldnt you be in school...?
Shall this be the new thread.....?

Shredder - Yes indeed, I did have the oppurtunity to hear, and learn about metal in a time period much different than todays music...!!
No, I dont mind if you ask me...! My oldest brother, who was the one that turned me into the metalhead that I am today..., passed away at the age of 40, back in '00... of a heart attack..!!
13. writes:
40? Wow, that's so young.. I'm sorry to hear that, dude. It would have been great though to live through the 70's and 80's to hear some great metal firsthand instead of having to search for it online and such.. and a lot of the bands from that era, I'll never get to see live. I've seen Nugent, KISS, Aerosmith, and Ozzy (solo, not with Sabbath) live, but that's it from that era.

I worded my last post wrong. I was alive for half of the 80's.. just too young to listen to metal, really. Although my parents said that at the age of 2 I liked to listen to GnR's "Appetite for Destruction".. back when it first came out and they bought it. I was a wee little headbanger!
16. writes:
TOG- I seen GnR in '88.... while you were that wee little headbanger...hahaha...
yeah, oddly enough, Im turning 40 in a couple months :-(
Jenny - are you learning anything..? a tuesday off from school... what is there to do on a Tues..?
You were listening to some Foghat.... I seen them in '82...open for Blue Oyster Cult...!! Now that was a great show...!!
17. writes:
godlike.. I don't know if you knew this or not, but Foghat played free at the State Fair just a few months ago. I had to work though, or I would have paid money to get in to the fair, see the free show, and then immediately leave, because the Iowa State Fair sucks! Then again, I'm not so sure how Foghat sounds these days... in 2008....... :/
18. writes:
TOG - never been to a state fair.... Athough back in the late 70s and up until '88.. there was the Iowa Jam.... those were at the State Fair grounds during the summer... My first one was '86 with Armored Saint, Metallica, Dokken, Ted Nugent and headliner was Aerosmith..!!
Im not really sure, just how many original members of Foghat are even in the band Foghat anymore..??
19. writes:
Godlike - I'm sorry to hear that man.....
I'm sure he had fun throughout his years. Did he take you to any shows when you were a kid?
TOG - Man you a were a little head banger back then huh?...I can't remember my childhood from when I was 5. I know, it's sad...lol
Jenny - You like to be kept updated on your MU news! That's good...so you got Veteran's Day off?...so many people have the day off tomorrow. I on the other hand, don't. -_-
NP - Jimi Hendrix - "Little Wing"

Godlike: Yeah, I'm learning; (I'm in drafting class as of this moment). Veteran's Day tomorrow, so no school. I'm gonna continue searching for/listening to music while I'm home. I'm on the letter 'H' in the power metal section I think. You got to see a lot of good bands live...lucky!
Shredder: You don't have the day off? That sucks. Got anything new to look forward to on the weekend? Cuz I don't....Oh, your b-day is on the 19th, got anything special in mind that you want?
T.O.G. "I was a wee little headbanger" ...that line made my day for some reason. :) Wait, does Foghat still record new material?

Jenny - Yeah apparently my school doesn't celebrate Veteran's Day. Oh well, I might not even go. Just showin some respect for the Veterans out there. Oh yeah my birthday is next wednesday. I don't really have anything in mind but anything would be appreciated.
This weekend I will go to band practice like always \m/ Oh...there's going to be a local metal gig nearby so, I might go to that too. Hey have you ever been in a band?...or wish to be in a band?...

Shredder - about the time I was 10-12 years old..my oldest brother ran the sound board and lights for one of the bigger cover/bar bands from this area... there was alot of weekends that he would take me along.... that allowed me to sit with him behind the boards....acting sooo cool...!!
Oddly enough, seeing Armored Saint and Metallica that day in 86.... didnt really matter as much as seeing Nugent and Aerosmith... in '86 Aerosmith had just reunited and released the album "Done with Mirrors.... an excellent show it was.......Nugent joined em on stage for encores of Train Kepta Rollin, Baby please dont Go and some other blues tunes....
Jenny - are you ever going to make an avatar.?
31. writes:
Shredder: Yeah, all that band business sounds like hard work; good luck finding members. That book you were talking about sounds interesting.
Godlike: I don't think I'm going to get one anytime soon, maybe in a few years...? As for going along with your brother to local gigs when you were little, that sounds cool! Memories like that are priceless...
NP: "Blue Monday" -Dragonfly (as you can all tell I feel all classic rock like today :)

^a few years?!?? Wow. I never thought I would meet someone who was a bigger procrasti..
Anyway, I'll finish that thought later.
I myself have managed to see Alice Cooper, Queensryche, and I saw Ozzy at Ozzfest, as well as Dio with "Iommi and co." on another tour lol, so technically, I've seen the original Black Sabbath, just in bits and pieces lol i plan to add ACDC to my list in a few months if i can, and then maybe Metallica at some point. Maiden, Priest, and Motorhead keep skipping Florida. :(
and we all know why It's gonna be impossible for me to see Zep... not even in bits and pieces, cause I am NOT going to an Alison Krauss concert. lol

How were shows in the 80's different from today's show's/gigs?...
Jenny - I will stay on high alert for local musicians! Just found out I got the day off tomorrow/today. Uhhhh?...hoo-ray!???...
Oh yeah!....why exactly have you not decided to put up an avatar?...any positive significance?

About the avatar thing, I have this picture of lightning over an ocean that I really like; (it looks cool). I just can't figure out how to do it, either that or I just don't try haha. What made you choose your current avatar?
NP: "Guardians Of Asgaard" -Amon Amarth
35. writes:
Shredder - Well, I cant say that Ive been to alot of shows lately... So I can only gather what I hear amongst you metalheads... !
The biggest difference in the concerts I went to back then... was that there was no such thing as a moshpit...at a Ted Nugent concert.. or a Rainbow concert...??..haha...LOL
I seen bands like Maiden and Priest a couple times each in the 80s.... the most ya seen was the crowd bangin their heads...!!
At the time that I seen concerts like Rainbow/Riot/Iron Maiden in '82... I was 13 yrs old...!!
Before that show, Id seen Kiss in '81 - last tour before removing their makeup ever..!!
That Aerosmith/Ted Nugent show we spoke of earlier.. with Metallica and Armored Saint in '86..?
I was 17 that summer...!!!
In '83 I seen The Rolling Stones on their "first" farewell tour...LOL..Seen em again in '94..!!
Jenny - the picture sounds great..!! Something is better than nothing.... save it to your pictures, open it as an avatar...crop it, save and open.. Its just that simple...!!
36. writes:
Godlike: Thanks, I'll see what I can do about an avatar. Yeah, moshing was most definitely not present back in the day. Depending on the band, certain attitudes reflect how the band makes them feel. If people are watching a mystic Led Zeppelin song live, the people just stand there in awe and enjoy this feeling of being calm. It's like your in another world. On the other hand, if people are watching Maiden, I'm assuming headbanging was the typical thing to do. When it comes to punk music, I've seen footage of punks acting crazy in the 80's though; they would jump up and down while holding each other's necks sometimes, like to express choking or something...? I have a feeling that maybe the punks started actual moshing, but I'm just taking a shot in the dark there.
NP: "Pentagram" -Nocturnal Rites

godlike: Once again, another thing we have in common. I started my pursuit of metal when I heard my older step brother jamming Iron Man on his 8 track. Crazy all of the similarities between the two of us. I think I already told you that my brother is one of the most highly sought after soundmen in the business didn't I? Only difference is he's my younger brother and I turned him on to metal. \m/!!!
39. writes:
ya, actually, hardore punk music started that sh**(moshing). Metal looked down the aisle, saw a musical common ally, and punks started to think that kids with long hair werent really all that bad, so they kinda met a common ground. Metal got faster and more violent, and punk became more technically proficient. Moshing became so commonplace in both area's of music, that today, people mosh at everything from ACDC to Kate Perry concerts. Ive seen people moshing at a T.I.(rapper) concert. hilarious. The only problem that really arose from all this meshing of music cultures, was metalcore...(metal + hardcore music, but not as good as either of them)
Now Playing: Metallica- metal militia

Bg1 - again with the similarities..?? mmmhhh
Yeah, I was the youngest of 5 kids.... my oldest brother graduated high school in '78... and I graduated in '87...!!
My journey into music was created by what he was listening to when he was 15-18...and looking at magazines like Circus and Creem.... hahaha... are those even around anymore...?
43. writes:
godlike: I think they are still around, just not as popular as they were back when they were the only source of metal news. I remember waiting anxiously for an entire month to get the whole scoop on the Randy Rhodes accident. Now days you get the story when it happens.

Not too bad for the pay (we get by), but there's a lot of education involved so I think everyone here is definately under paid. It is indeed interesting though because the field is in a state of constant change. It keeps us on our toes. I agree about getting the chance to meet everyone. That would be cool. Unfortuneately it would be pretty tough. Wiggles lives in the land down under and Cynic lives in New Zealand, Irish lives... You get the idea. We're a pretty sread out bunch. Still... It would be cool though.

BG- I do not think they have ever thrown out my blood, I just kind of always wondered in the back of my mind, you know what I mean? I know here there is always a shortage of blood at the hospitals.
I give blood a couple times a year and I enjoy doing it. I have A+ blood, which I am pretty sure means that any age group can receive mine.
171. writes:
Bruno: If you're A+, you can donate a good match to A+ and AB+, you can receive A+ A- O+ and O-. It doesn't have much to do with age groups unless we're talking about females (because those of child bearing age can be tricky to transfuse). It's good that you donate dude. I recommend that everyone does. Blood shortages are for real and they totally suck. Besides, it's good for you.

My viens are too small to donate. Tried to (yes, plenty of water was drank) and the guy couldn't hit my vien! Ended up with a huge bruise on my arm, and got sick! Atleast I tried. Wacken MU tent would be awesome! If the economy gets better, I will go this year.

ANNNNDDDD....If you read my profile, it says i plan on going to Wacken in a couple of years, and if you want to meet up there at any point, contact me via myspace, so I kinda had that plan all along, so I am completely fine with setting up a Metal Underground tent. All it needs is a banner with the MU logo/catchphrase, and massive amounts of alcohol. I'm talking gallons. No wait tubs. NO. Trucks. that should do it.
And eventually, I will get around to checking out This band called blindgreed(what a silly name, anything else with that name must be equall stupid...) and when i do, my myspace name will be "Fvck PIGS/Metal War God", so accept me damnit.

Shredder- These fires have been crazy, huh? I live in Yorba Linda, which was burning until last night. Anaheim Hills is the city directly south, it was burning. The city north is Brea (where I work), and it is still burning! I am have been right smack in the middle of this sh** for too long!
Wiggles- Unfortunaley, more often than not it is some sadistic f*** who starts these fires. Last year in Riverside County a guy started one and as a result four people died. The guy responsible will be tried on murder charges for all four victims.
Jenny- Hey, what's going on? I get Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday off of work, so I am looking forward to a four day weekend myself!

Bruno - You were surrounded by flames!...I'm checking out the news and they aren't covering the fires anymore. I'm guessing they've been completely contained?...What's the up-date there man?

I found out that working is necessary to live not the other way around. I flip the bird to big jobs with many hours like I had and I salute the little jobs with more fun into it. I'm a bit late into this thread, but let's see if I can play catch up. First off Godlike, thanks for what you do, you keep America operating buddy. Tony is way overdue for something like that.
My musical journey is a complicated one. I was raised in Cajun Country Louisiana on a healthy dose of country, cajun, and zydeco music. My sister listened to pop, my aunts and uncles were into everything from disco to maiden, and everything in between. I was a total 80's kid, listening to all of the pop and c*** rock bands. I also liked GnR and Metallica. For some reason I went back to pop until I got into high school.
I was a total yuppie poser that wanted to fit in. I started hanging around lots of different kind of people. As The "Black" album was popular at this time, I devoured it. My 10th grade year, I started hanging around different people who listened to heavier stuff. I was at my cousins house and we were watching TV, a channel called, "The Box"(anyone remember that?). Anyway, that was when I first saw Megadeth and Slayer. I was instantly hooked. I gradually started getting heavier and heavier. My first death metal album was Napalm Death= Utopia Banished.
Times changed and my musical tastes matured. I was opposed to black metal, but because my friends inundated me with it, some of it grew on me. Now I like all kinds of metal except for the over done metal. Bands like Rhapsody and Dragonforce just annoy the crap out of me. I also don't like the mic-in-mouth metal(Cannibal Corpse) or the machismo metal(Manowar). I was in Korea for the whole rap-rock thing. Luckily that lasted about as long as my tour.
Geez this thread went all over the place. IT's cold here in Georgia!! Yesss!!!!

Shredder: I play guitar. I have been tinkering with the ole guit-fiddles for years and I for one can tell you that I believe that you can modify any guitar any way you want to. You just need to be creative enough to make it work. I had an old pawn shop guitar (no name or if it had one I dont remember) that I put a floyd rose into, I had to shim out the back so that the tail piece didn't get hung up on my leg. No matter what pick ups I dropped into the damned thing I couldn't ever seem to get the low end resonance that I needed for the sound I wanted. So, after thinking about it for a few day's I disassembeled it; took the main body out into the desert and shot it three times with a 12 guage from about 10-15 feet (bird shot pellets). It embeded square pellets all throughout the front and back (2 shots to the back-one in the front) I took it home, sanded and painted it again (this time with a custom powder coat) dropped my Bill Lawrence L-500's back into it, strung it up and "Shotgun Willey" was born. Every time I played out with it, people would always ask me "what model is that?" knowing full well they had no idea what they were looking at, but they wanted to know so that they could get that kind of sound for themselves. "Shotgun Wille" was eventually stolen while we were breaking down after a gig in Phoenix, but I know if I ever hear him again, who ever is playing him had better have packed themselves a lunch because he will be comming back home with papa. I've considered making another one some day, but for now I don't have the need for another guitar (godlike: I know you don't understand that. lol).

I told him I was out in Lafayette. He said, "Did you go see Type O"? I asked where they were playing...guess where they were playing. This was on the "Bloody Kisses" tour. I got laid that night, so I guess it wasn't a total loss. I really wanted to see Type O though.
We were supposed to go see Marilyn Manson on the "Portrait" tour in Baton Rouge. Death was opening and we were all set to go. I went to my buddies house about 4-5 hours before the show. His dad said he was at a friends house and would be back in 30 minutes. I came back in 45 and asked again. he said he had already left to go to the show. Hey to all !!
Well, I made it to Missouri.... damn it was a long day...!! 13 hrs behind the wheel, and only stopped for a potty break once....
Shredder - I certainly dont want to jump into a conversation... or throw out my opinions if they're not asked for....but, I wanna suggest steering clear of trying to put a Floyd on that particular model of BC Rich.....
The reasoning behind not attempting to install a Floyd on that guitar..??..
That happens to be one of the lower end Richs.... the body isnt even made of real wood... so routing would be a b^tch... and would probably end up causing some major headaches if the "wood" split or chipped...
It would probably be easier to buy a different guitar that already has a Floyd on it..... by the time you buy the routing template and try and route it out, or pay someone to do it..... It would end up costing more than the guitar is worth... no offense of course..... !!
And another reason would be that it would be a hassle to try replace the nut.... that also requires a bit of touchy routing to install the locking nut of a Floyd..!!
I dont want it to sound like Im going against what Bg1 said.... but Im assuming the guitar that he described was at least made out of actual wood..!!
And while Im on the subject of the guitar that Bg1 was talking about....
Bg1 - Im only guessing, but perhaps the reason that guitar was lacking that Low end, is that it was probably made out of Alder or Poplar, which are not the most expensive or desirable "tone woods" and they have a tendency to not sound as full as a Les Paul ( made out of Mahogany) for example.... and the reason it sounded better after being riddled with pellets...is that those pellets actually added some heft to the body.... giving it that lower end, heavier sound...??
( not needing another guitar..? HA.....now thats f^ckin blasphemy..!! ) LOL..!!
AP - hey thanks man..... Its not too often, that people actually think of just how important truckers are to the country...!!
If it wasnt for "us"..... the country would come to a standstill in a matter of days...!!
Red - once again, your humor gives me a much needed laugh...!!

My relatives accents are so thick you can cut them with a knife. I love accents from everywhere. When I lived in Texas, my neighbor was from North Dakota. She sounded just like the chick from "Fargo". The Germans loved to hear my wife talk. She has a thick Texas drawl that still has me laughing after almost 10 years together. Even as a FNM fan, this was an epiphany.
Let's examine this: Epiphany= a sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into the reality or essential meaning of something, usually initiated by some simple, homely, or commonplace occurrence or experience. That's what this was for me.
I was printing out a datasheet, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. The song is 5:35 minutes long. At 3:16, it changes and takes on an old gospel feeling and just uplifts me. I may have to keep that in mind next guitar I buy. I'd love to modify one myself, but I just don't know enough about the inner workings of the guitar to really do that.
Shredder - I agree with godlike, I really wouldn't try putting a Floyd into that B.C. Rich.. it just wouldn't sound right, in my opinion. Just seems so "out of place."

Hey all.... !!
Bg1 - indeed, the unfinished neck is the way to go... thats all I will play...and own..!! The ones in my collection that had a finish on em, was stripped off..!!
To help with the humidity and such, I put a couple thin coats of "Tru-oil" gunstock finish on em.., that provides a moisture barrier but doesnt f^ck with the smooth feeling of being unfinished..!!
OK.. so I was wrong about "assuming" shotgun willie was made out of real wood..!! LOL..!!
TOG - the easiest way to learn about the workings of a guitar is to open it up and check it out...
Walmart sells a book called "Guitar for dummies".... yeah it sounds goofy... my ol lady bought me a copy a few years ago..., and its amazing how much info is actually in there.... it will tell you how to adjust the truss rod and lots of other useful info to save the hassle and cost of the local repair shop...!! I dont what they charge in your area.... but we have one store in a 50 mile radius or where I live.... and they charge $45/hr for any labor.... thats part of the reason I started working on my own, and other peoples too.... when I get the chance that is...!!
A friend of the ol ladies, would take her kids guitar to this store, and they would charge her an hour of labor just to restring it.... so now I do it for her, and only charge $20.... ;-)
I find, that living in Iowa, there are some months out of the year, that I have to give it (truss rod) a turn or so either way, sometimes once a week ..!!
Getting paid to drive for a living is OK..getting paid ALOT to drive for a living is even better \m/

TOG - hey man... dont feel bad about only changing strings a few times a year... sometimes I go longer...depending on how clean I keep em... I use the stuff called Fast Fret.... its great for cleaning all the oils from your fingers off the strings and it even provides a cleaner and preservative to the fretboard..!!
Costly to change strings...?? Try changing strings on 7 guitars on a regular basis..!! I usually buy the 10pack of Di adarrios !! but that sure doesnt last long...!!
I dont break strings very often, actually its been years since Ive broke a string... so I dont ever have to buy singles..!
I was told long ago, that its best to change strings after every 20hrs of usage..... F^ck that.... Id go broke..!! I have tried the DR color coated strings... they do last ALOT longer than normal strings, but damn, they are $15 a set.... multiply that by 7 guitars = No way !!
Ive used the black ones on my Nightswan a couple times....!! They look cool...but a little too expensive for my budget !

I guess chugging down 16th notes non-stop can be very harmful to your strings...lol...my strings of choice are DR Strings. They last me a good 6 months or so.
