This will be the make or break for everyone I think actually. so much hype has been built around this album, what with studio footage and these 15 second song samples all over the place, so it will be refreshing to actually hear something substantial. We can finally know if the album is gonna suck-ass or kick-ass ( or be "meh"-ass lol)

I personally think "Death Magnetic" will be good. But good is it. However because it'll be better than everything Metallica's done in seventeen years, it will become overrated. That said, I can't wait for it and I'm sure I'll be one of the people overrating it lol!

I've been trying to keep my expectations low but every little bit the band release has been fairly promising (other than "The New Song" that the band played live a couple years back and has since scrapped--thank god.)
I won't be surprised if this album finds a way to bomb (I'm most concerend about Hetfields vox and lyrics at this juncture) but it shouldn't be the spectacular ship sinking that "St. Anger" was.

I'm rapt with anticipation over this new metallica. I've been dissappointed by them, quite a few times, and this is likely to follow suit. But my standing with Metallica, regardless of my feelings on them, is that they still might have potential to release that next great metal album. Even though they haven't done that in 17 years, it could still happen again. It's like when you find an old firecracker in a dresser drawer and when you light it, it could fizzle or explode right away in your hand.
...sigh...maybe I'm just dreaming...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

To Post 7: I agree, Formation was a killer album.
To Post 3: I agree with that in principal. It might be the make or break for believing they have something left in the tank for new material - but as long as they continue to work the first 4 albums into setlists as often as they have when i've seen them, I'll keep paying the money to watch.
To Post 5: Your probably correct.

The two riffs on the webpage from yesterday/today and the 8/18 mission footage sound pretty slick. First "thrashy" sounds I've heard since AJFA from them. If you havent heard it, youTube the 8/18 footage.
Hopefully it can stand up to the new Testament album, which IMO was better than "United Abominations" or the last couple Exodus albums. All in all, I don't think I will be any more disapointed than I was from anything Black album -> forward.
I'm not on the "I hate Metallica more than anything and will bash every chance I get" or on the "I love Metallica so much I'll defend them no matter what" wagon - but the first 3 Metallica albums when I was growing up really helped define my music tastes. I think they kill live, I think the first 3 albums held up better than anything from era (Reign in Blood also still kills today) as well. Here's trusting they have some more thrash left in the tank. If not, it's not the end of the world.
