Metallica Denies Political Undertones In "The Day That Never Comes"

Metallica has denied that "The Day That Never Comes" is an attempt to send a political statement about America's ongoing involvement with the war in Iraq. The video for the song, which is due to be released in early September, depicts a solider aiding a wounded solider. The song will be the first single off the band's new album.
Speaking about the track, frontman James Hetfield told MTV News he hoped the band could put "the human element in what is an unfortunate part of life.
"There are people over there dealing with situations like this, and we're showing the human part of being there," he said.
"There are so many celebrities that soapbox their opinions, and people believe it's more valid because they're popular. For us, people are people — you should all have your own opinion."
Hetfield told MTV that he hoped the video would help "cut through" peoples opinions of the war.
"The politics and the religion tend to separate people, and what we're trying to do is bring it together with the common thread of resentment and forgiveness," he added.
"The Day That Never Comes" is the first song from the band's eagerly anticipated new album, "Death Magnetic," which will be released worldwide on September 12th.

Nothing like a once cutting-edge band taking the bland, boring, centrist road--"It's not about the war, we don't want to offend anybody!"
Metallica's next single will go something like this--
I'd like to buy the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to buy the world a Coke
And keep it company
Could I ever hate Metallica even more? I don't think it's possible.

Then again, Metallica, unlike Slayer, have never been into writing controversial songs. The controversy circling songs like One, or Ride the Lightning are mild, at best. I just hope that whatever these songs are about, that they are putting thought into the lyrics like they used to do.

What's funny is that the article never says that anyone accused it of being about the war in the first place! The video, let alone the song, have yet to even be released! They're answering a question that nobody asked! Brilliant! Once again, Metallic acontinues their trend of masterful songwriting that they began with the career-making "St. Anger" album. Fans of that complete pile of sh** will be pleased, I'm sure. :D

GO DIAMONDBACKS!
as for metallica - not on my most anticipated list, but i am interested to see if they can salvage any of their once deserving reputation as the best metal band on the planet.
now playing: carcass - doctrinal expletives

i gotta say, i like metallica and amon amath and motorhead
frankly st anger was a disappointment but before anyone goes badmouthing any band, metallica, dimmu borgir, turisas, disturbed, amon amath, motorhead, korpiklaani, slayer, cradle of filth or cannibal corpse, to name a few, they should at least give them a chance
now playing: diamond head - am i evil?

Do you know what Metallica does with duct tape? Do you really want to know?!
Hetfield tapes Hammets feet to his hair and gives him a gay not-able-to-defend rim job.
Then, after that, some mexican bass player tapes Ulrich's hands over his head, willingly by said Ulrich, WILLINGLY!!, and then goes down on him so gay-like that Ulrich giggles two times faster than he can double-bass! Two times doublegiggle!?
Hetfileld untapes Hammet so he can join in all the gaity, and then when all four have satisfied the upside-down barstool, they engage in a totally pop-"metal" french kiss!
Yeah, it's going to be a GrAYt album. We can hardly wait.

how about everyone who has made up their minds about the new metallica album, before it has even been released, wait for it to be released, give it a listen THEN form your opinion. its so stupid to judge a band of this calibre by the last album they made. yes it was a steaming pile sh**, but theyve probably learned from that huge mistake that was St. Anger, and theyre willing to move on. shut your f***ing mouth, wait for the new album to come out, THEN, if it sucks ass, give them sh**. or better yet, do something more productive, like...eat an orange, or roll up your sleeves.
34. writes:
Nah ah ugly-bob, we'll do it the other way around, we'll give our opinion first and THEN if the album is great we will all say that we were wrong this time but still had a great time. Plus it's not only the last album that sucked but the last 3 albums so there is a pattern there that gives us a good base to say that they suck.
So we'll do it that way and if the album doesn't suck, I'll be one of the first to tell you that I was wrong. Seems good don't you think ?

I still like Metallica, Dave. Sure, St. Anger was crap (apart from tracks Frantic and St. Anger) and how they managed to make it sound so bad is beyond my understanding, but they're a band that has tried different styles and sounds, nothing wrong with that. And hey, did they claim to be "the heaviest band on earth" when they released Load and ReLoad?
37. writes:
lolz, fair enough red_chord. to each his or her own. i still think its silly to judge an album before it has even been released, but if thats what gets you hard, or wet, be my guest. and dave, i still like metallica. the music of metallica anyhow, i think the members (apart from maybe rob) are complete tools

38. writes:
All I can say is that I'm w/Dave n Jamez: I still like Metallica. Yes, it is fair enough to bash on the new album, but I personally can't wait to see Metallica got their sharp edge back, otherwise i'm gonna b pretty sad. I don't give a f*** if the band members screwed up. I just want that FEELING back.

jenny you have a sound point, im actually waiting with hope for their new album, and i am a big metallica fan, ever since i was about 5 years old. i didnt care much for st. anger, but like i said in my previous post, st. anger wasnt an album, but theyve realised that now and apparently theyre going to try and produce an "old-school" metallica album. so im pretty excited to hear what it will sound like. i just think its silly for the haters in this forum to judge the album when it hasnt been released yet.

Well like I said they put out such bad albums (3 in a row), said so much sh** (especially Lard Ulcer) that we got sour about it. I mean we all still like the Metallica before Load and I will never turn my back on that but since Load they became so weird and sh**ty and said all the time how great they would sound and blah blah that we don't believe in it anymore. that is why we are like that.
BUT, if they pull it, I'll be so happy about it, believe me it's going to be my pleasure to find you on this site and tell you. I'll be a sport about it don't worry.
But I think (correct me if I am wrong) they never said that they would make an old school album they said the would like to revisit the sound of their early albums and try to mix it with were they are nowadays.
Well keep your hope up, you might be rewarded and quite frankly, I wish that you will be right about it...
41. writes:
They can't ever make an "old-school" album. Their Depends Underpants and Ben-Gay (STILL-GAY) medication dictate some psudo-diaper-metal alternative pop-"metal" hacktion full of non-offending yet non-defining random overdriven noise will just grace nicely the headstones of bland gravestone art. R.I.P.

I just feel sadness in reference to metallica now...when I was teenager(now 32) this was the band that were the gods of music to me..I had the records, tapes, cliff 'em all vhs, shirts,my cool a$$ jean jacket with the backpatch(anybody remember those?)at my 8th grade "graduation dance" we were allowed to play any song we wanted to over the sound system. my friends and I played "Fight Fire With Fire" and sat on the staged and headbanged through the entire song. There was no equal to Metallica back then. Then "ONE" was on MTV and the jocks who once tried to make fun of the metalheads were blasting it in their cars in the parking lot! A sick feeling came over me because I new my heros were never going to be the same. The Black album came out and I lost my favorite band.................

all the people who want us to "listen to the album before we make up our minds.."
no.
metallica used to be a fave of mine back in the day but after releasing utter gash and then the piece of pure horriffic meh that was st anger kinda betrayed all my money i had spent on albums, gigs merch ect.
i know this album will be as crap as a tellitubbie gang bang and about as metal as america's pop idol.
i will not be giving it a listen before judging. if a mate does me a copy of said album chances are each song will have 30 seconds to impress, before the copy is used as a beer coaster.

red chord, there so should be a law - you know the whole liberty, freedom of speech and freedom of choice stuff? - that shouldn't apply to lars cos he's danish!
it's a shame what happened to metallica, i've actually stopped thinking of st. anger as a metallica album, cos my brain just could not connect master of puppets and invisible kid under the same artist. i will be really happy if this album sounds somewhat like justice, puppetz or ride, cos at least it means they're trying and they know where they went wrong
i wouldn't say they f***ed up 4 times, i mean sure, black album wasn't thrash, but it was still a better alternative to dr feelgood
and i don't think we'd count garage inc and S&M, jamez, cos on garage inc they didnt write the songs, and s&m was nothing new cos theyd already written it back in the day (unless of course you count -Human and No Leaf Clover)

Hmmm... most of Metallica's best songs had political undertones... Basically the entire AJFA album, anyone? They should definitely explore some new subject areas, don't get me wrong, but these guys do the political thing better than anyone (when they do anything worthwhile, anyway). Besides, Thrash and politics just works, doesn't it? I always thought so.

Dude, we ALL are fans of the true Metallica thrash. I think that is why we are so angry at the random bar chords, lame topics, fake solos, group hugs, gay kisses, psychobabble, modern haircuts, centrist sellouts...THAT HAVE DEFINED metallica THESE LAST 20+ YEARS!

63. writes:
I know what goth music actually is - it's terrible
not that i'm saying anyone here is a goth, frankly you all sound like true metalheads!
f*** you all, i agree with you to the extent that metallica are good and paved the way for modern bands, but you didn't exactly go about it the right way for getting everyone else to agree with you...
64. writes:
red_chord, i couldnt tell if you were taking the piss or not haha. yeah i was a wrong when i said "old school" metallica, i did mean they were doing the thing what you said many a moon ago. i am hopeful that they will redeem themselves but well just have to wait and see...or...hear?
and f***youall, i know many goths who like metallica. so your point (if there was one) is f***ing ridiculous. who is to say that cos people rip on metallica, theyre instantly "goth fag asses"?! and please, think of a better insult than that...are you 12?
