Technical/progressive metal legends CYNIC are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming album, to be released later this year via Season of Mist Records. Returning from the "Focus"-era are founding members Paul Masvidal (guitars/clean vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums) along with Sean Malone (bass), and joining the band in the studio is newcomer Tymon Kruidenier (guitars/growls). The band is currently doing the final stages of mixing with producer Warren Riker, and the band is extremely happy with the results.

In addition, the band has announced their first upcoming tour dates in Europe, with additional dates/touring to be announced in the near future (including US dates). The band has also been announced as the headliner for this year's ProgPower Europe festival, and will be playing a special extended set at the show.

Guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal had this to say:
"Sean and I are pleased to announce the completion of album #2. We've been on an amazing journey discovering this new music and soon it will be yours. Expect the unexpected. The album is an intensely concentrated mosaic of internal and external energies, from the deepest peace to the purest aggression. There's an acquired taste that comes with a record of this density, but once your ears wrap themselves around the language at work, everything falls into place and suddenly you'll feel a sudden urge to sing, scream or maybe even cry. The album has a beginning, middle and end. The story will reveal itself after numerous listens and then you may not want to let go. Besides Reinert and I, Tymon brought some new life force and magic to the record with fierce growling and poetic guitar sensibilities. Malone also did a fine job with the low end, grooving away with Reinert in a pocket land from hell!

"For the live department, due to Malone's other commitments, we're pleased to welcome Robin Zielhorst into the fold on bass along with Tymon growling and ripping it up on another glorious Steinberger! Robin's a phenomenal Dutch talent pulled from Tymon's brain into the madness of Cynic's musical melange. The band is now a fiery breathing entity, full of magic dust, ready to appear at your doorstep this summer. Please join us at an upcoming concert."

Yeah I thought since I comment on every Cynic thread I'd miss this one out... but no haha. You can check out some snippets of the new album at http://www.myspace.com/cyniconline, possible new album cover as well? It looks cool that's for sure, like two "Focus" figures facing away from each other.

^Look who decided to show up here! If I may ask kind of a broad question Cynic, what is it about the band Cynic that gets you excited? Havent heard much of them, but havent heard your complete over view on what makes Cynic your favorite band. You dont have to answer if you want, I am just cureiouse.

Have you heard any tracks from Focus? Hmm tough question, I guess they embody the type of music I'm interested in in a high level way rather than a generic way, as I'm not too genre focused when I comes to my favorite bands. By that I mean Cynic's music is technical, emotional, original, progressive etc.

I think in music I really value originality, riffs that make you go wow I didn't expect that, and yet it fits in perfectly so you can't imagine it any other way. Why have the whole band go chug chug chug chug in 4/4 timing like every other band in existence when you can intertwine 2 complex guitar lines and bass in 12/7? Why go verse/chorus/verse when you can write 40 seconds of nonstop neoclassical riffs with no repeating?

It probably also comes down to that I play guitar, I can't stand unoriginal riffing. In a world of At The Gates ripoffs and Metallica wannabes something as complex and intense as Cynic is just all the more special.

See. I knew you would be able to give me more of a nuge to check Cynic out further and even be able to give me educated reasons as to why. Honestly, I dont remember what Cynic I heard. That was way too many shots ago, and it was one song a friend of mine played for me. I remember liking it, but then got really cought up in black metal. Still am, but in need of expantion. Thank you Cynic!

Focus is a weird album but worth checking out. If you're a fan of Chuck Schuldiner's work in Death then check out Cynic's Roadrunner demo as that's more of a death/thrash effort.

Very excited for the new album. I enjoyed the Promo they released this year, so hopefully this album will be just as good. I think an American Headlining Tour would be very nice too.
