To post 9 - I have to disagree, man. I could be wrong, but I read that Phil Anselmo heard this band and patterned his singing style after Kyle..and if you listen to exhorder, and then Pantera - you will hear the similarities....big time. Exhorder came first - then Pantera..Pantera just got huge.

Follow up post - Pantera may have borrowed some ideas...riffs, style, etc. from Exhorder, but I would not say that they ripped them off. I agree to, Pantera was smart to emulate a great band like exhorder. Anyway, lots of bands rip off sounds from other bands...it is the nature of the music business. I can not even tell you how many times I see the same song title used by several different bands, or the same killer riff used by another band. I just let those things slide, and enjoy the music. For instance, Arch Enemy totally rips off the newScorpions track - on the first track of their cd - go compare the two. Arch Enemy's -Rise of the Tyrant vs. Scorpions - Humanity. I even let my friend hear the two songs, and he was in agreement. It was crazy!

Pantera may have came first but Exhorder started to play that style which Pantera became famous for first. I love both bands but you gotta understand the Exhorder demos were before Power Metal and definetly before Cowboys from Hell and its weird how they ended up sounding so similar.

I don't know why Pantera fans don't like Power Metal, it's a great album. Easily some of Dime's best solos too, though they've got the whole Judas Priest worship going on. Pantera is a groove thrash combo, calling VDoP thrash would be a misrepresentation of their sound.
Now Playing: The Lord Weird Slough Feg - "Bi-Polar Disorder"

^ agreed. power metal is probably my favorite pantera album. its funny, well actually sad really, but most of the pantera "fans" that i know think CFH was pantera's first album. one of my buddies about sh** himself when i showed him pantera's first four.
now playing: the Titanic soundtrack - "hard to starboard"

I remember first getting into pantera and listening to CFH. I googled them to see what other albums they had that I could check out. I too, just about sh** myself seeing their older material.
On Topic, Exhorder rules, it was this post and this post alone that made me want to check them out. I don't notice the groove as much in them though. Exhorder seems to be a much faster tempo than Pantera, however, they both have seemingly exact guitar sound.

i really do not think there guitar tones sound very similar at all, both are incredibly heavy, but also very different. exhorder i think almost uses a distortion pedal into and amp already on the gain channel, while dime just used high gain solid states. Exhorder's tone is a lot more distorted than dimebags
