Metallica To Pull a Trent Reznor?

Photo of Metallica

Band Photo: Metallica (?)

Gigwise reports the following:

Metallica are considering whether to follow in the footsteps of Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails by self releasing material once their record contract expires.

The rock titans’ drummer Lars Ulrich told Rolling Stone that he would hate to go the way of Madonna and U2 by signing lucrative contracts with Live Nation. Instead, he said the band would like to keep things in their own hands.

Asked about signing a ‘360 deal’ like Madonna, Ulrich said: "We've never sold ourselves that way. No disrespect. We want to be as free a player as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet."

Despite this, Ulrich admits he’d be sad to see the traditional record shop disappear, adding: "The record store has been such a huge part of our lives. When I was 12, 14 years old in Denmark, the record store was the Holy Grail and the guy who worked there was my hero."

Metallica’s upcoming ninth studio album will be their final one to be released through Warner Bros. It’s set for release this autumn.

Look at the name again and tell me which word comes first, metal or underground? It's pretty silly that everyone seems to take the MU name so seriously. If the site was Undergroundmetal.com then people would have a point, as far as I'm concerned though, "underground" is just a word posted at the end of it. Bar all that, the future of this is dependent on hits, which come from big name bands such as Metallica.

And don't start attacking me. My point on that you don't look our news very carfeully was valid since we have posted many stories on bands people have never heard of or that have an underground following. More than you think. Everyday bands get added to this site, we do look for underground bands but that doesn't mean that every unsigned band with a demo is an underground band and that we should cover them. You will also notice that I rarely copy stories from Blabbermouth anymore aswell or other sites for that matter. You wanna do this work? Then do it. If not, then you don't have the right to complain about it.

Korpiklaani - Finnish folk metal
Sahg - Norwegian doom metal
Sycronomica - UNSIGNED black metal

The Ocularis Infernum - UNSIGNED Australian death/grind
Attacker - old school power metal
+ many more bands who I seriously doubt you have any knowledge of - i.e. you a fan of Darkwater or Ihsahn?

b) Diamond Oz makes another great point in that it would be a pointless waste of time to report news on every "underground" basement black-metal band with his new myspace release etc.

c) Yes the contributers who keep this site running by taking time out to post news for little else but perks are awesome.

d) MU delivers news on a wide range of bands from the super popular to the super underground - if you're looking for something more restricted please be our guest and leave. But I doubt you'll find any site as comprehensive as MU.

Intelligent discussion is a rarity around here, which is unfortunate. Most threads immediately degenerate into a flame-fest, and trying to reason with most is complete waste of time.

Metallica is coming out with a new album. Get ready for more posts as their PR machine kicks it into high gear. This is the cycle that happens with all big releases. We cover all kinds of metal and related heavy music here, so they are certainly relevant. And we definitely post news on tons of underground bands, and have made a point of it especially in the past year or so. No apologies or additional explanations needed.

But to the specific question by branded: I add about half a dozen new bands to the database each week that weren't there before (out of the already 6000+). And follow hundred of underground labels and bands and post on them as well, as do our other contributors. If you want to follow JUST the newly added bands, go to the band page and scroll down to the "New Additions." Oh look, 10 newly added bands since 3 days ago!

^ ya , also, while we're at it, (and since coldiem mentioned it), I think the archives on here would work smoother if they were catogorized by the day the articles were posted, or perhaps by the week, to make things easier. It would probably be a lot of work organizing all that, so excuse me if I'm demanding something a little over the top; I apologize if so. It's just so frustrating to look for any older articles on here. The band search is handy, but mispellings of band names you just discovered can be hazardous, so sometimes it too can end up frustrating. Hell, If I had the time, I would do it myself if I was allowed and knew how to do it.

what i am saying is that the so called awesome contributors always post about their fave bands and then think because we smacktalk them that we are dumbasses. all we are saying is why does metallica need 3 or 4 posts per week. we know that they are (suppossedly, recording an album). we have been told of the release date, (blabbermouth.net is reporting it may be pushed back to october now). that article will soon be copied and pasted here for the metallisheep to spank off to. im not saying stop posting articles on popular bands, but give us a fuking break on this metallica bullsh!t. we are sick and tired of seeing the same boring a$$ news on a band that has done everything they can to destroy the music industry. remember how lars was talking megash1t about how the internet was destroying the industry due to d/l music. wow, seems he has changed his tune after seeing trent make a killing off a self release. now looks like the metallifags will be the next to do it. o and im sure itll be looked at as such a breakthrough for music artists, and they are not the ones who even started the whole thing. as much as i think radiohead sux, they are the original pioneers of this new trend in promoting of music. yes i have seen numerous bands that i know nothing about get articles posted here, but the overall majority of the articles are of popular bands. all i am saying is give lesser known bands more coverage. i see videos posted of popular bands, why not do the same for lesser known bands. SINCE THE ADMINS LOVE TO COPY AND PASTE SO MUCH, WHY NOT SCOUR YOUTUBE FOR VIDEOS OF UNDERGROUND BANDS TO POST LINKS TO? just a curious thought.

deathbringer writes:

why not? when spiders scour the internet for keywords, it brings links to this site. the more info you have on your site the more relevance it has on the internet. not saying this site has zero relevance, but hopefully you understand. the more bands that you can add, the more the site appears to support the music community, but the more you post about your fave bands the more you show how much you choose to give favoritism. im not saying im a music expert in knowing all the bands out there, but the more bands you have the more it looks better for the site you love so much.

The more "underground" you go doesn't neccesarily mean the better you get. I'm sure there could be some band out there that is unsigned and yet to play a show that is so "brootal" that if a pregnant catholic lady heard just one second of one song her fetus would abort itself, but I doubt it. Also if this site only covered the deepest most underground news then eventually only stories like, "black metal newcommers Rapedbyacavetroll are pleased to annouce the purchase of a new crate solid state head because jerry the guitarist got paid for mowing his neighbors yard". Why do we need to take a break on Metallica so badly? Why not Korn or Disturbed or Judas Priest or Iron Maiden? Simple answer: Big names bring in big hits for the website. Alot of people out there still like Metallica, myself included and this news really isn't the same old stuff.

Also in answer to your question about why we don't just add bands for the sake of it, it's because really there isn't any point. It would just take up space that we could use to post stories or better yet take up with info on new bands. Adding bands with no information and nothing to say is a bad idea and if anything will put us in bad light I believe for just having an underground band there for the sake of it, almost making us look like a bunch of posers in my opinions.

Finally, in response to "i am saying is that the so called awesome contributors always post about their fave bands and then think because we smacktalk them that we are dumbasses", we both know this isn't true. My favourite bands are Fozzy and Drowning Pool and they get slated all the time on this site. Do I complain or insult people? Nope. I accept that some people dislike, daresay hate, those bands and move on, like you should accept that ALOT of people like Metallica. I could go through plenty of Metallica threads and quote you calling Metallica fans names but why bother?

You moronic Metallica bashers would seem to prefer that they just keep pumping out songs at 160 bpm over and over again. Anything that's not Kill em All or Justice is selling out? An album (black) sells 15+ million copies so they've sold out right? Man i'm sick of hearing the same crappy arguements about how Metallica 'sold out'.
