Rage Against The Machine's Big Day Out Performance Ends In Violence

According to Australia's Herald Sun, the Melbourne Big Day Out event featured two casualties, a crowd surge, and thousands of angry and confused fans last Monday night. An unconscious man had to be crowd-surfed to an ambulance, while another man fell from a marquee as crowds pushed forward to get as close to the stage as possible for the Rage Against The Machine performance.

Organizers were forced to interrupt the American headliners near the end of their set to appeal to the 45,000 fans to calm down. Revellers said they feared for their safety as the crowd surged towards the main stage, fans climbing every available vantage point for a better view. The organizers then rushed the band off-stage, ordering people to get down from the structures and trees before the band would be allowed to resume.

One man who was on top of a marquee fell and was rushed to hospital by ambulance officers, who put him in neck brace. The condition of the two injured people was unknown late last night. Cameron Oliver, am attendee, said he saw a lot of violence in the crowd. "In nine Big Day Outs and numerous other festivals, this is the most violent and least-policed I have been to," he said. "We had to pull back from the stage — so far back we couldn't even see because we were afraid for our safety. And I'm a six-foot bloke."

Honestly this news does not in the least surprise me. I am sad that there was two deaths. I am a RATM fan and love their music and get crazy when I hear it, but do think a little mellowing out should be in order in the future.

Very sad news. I get worried too - when the crowd become aggressive. I use my head - and think first before entering the mosh pit. I WILL not go into a pit if the band has extremely heavy or aggressive riffs...such as Slayer or Lamb of God...forget about it. I am too damn old for that sh**. People seem to mosh to even melodic rock or metal....weird. I guess they mosh to release their frustration and anger with life.

Mosh pits are aggresion release. Thats why they are fun. I am the kind of freak that loves a good ol aggressive pit. When I lived in Pa a club I went to played two hours of metal and had a pit. The first hour was supposed to be for the guys and second hour for the chicks. "FUUUCK THAT!" I said and went in with the guys! Specally cos the chicks were a bunch of whips and they did no Slayer or decent mosh music for the chicks! The guys loved it and gained respect when I mowed the biggest guy over. One chick came out with a wittle brusie and was whining when it was the girls turn and I laughed at her! If you are a chick going in to a f***ing pit go in like a woman and dont f***ing cry when you get hurt or your butt touched! Its not a god damned hug fest!!
