Alice In Chains Go Platinum
ALICE IN CHAINS' "Nothing Safe" 1999 three-disc box set, which covered the group's best songs and assorted rarities, was certified platinum on December 11, 2007 by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for sales in excess of one million copies in the United States.
ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell recently told MTV.com that the band is working on new material and hopes to have an LP recorded by the end of 2008.
"Definitely possibly," Cantrell responded when asked whether fans could expect an ALICE record next year. "I don't think you can put a time limit on it, because first we have to come up with a record we're satisfied with, and I think we can do that."
He continued, "The body of stuff that's been coming out so far — all the riffs and song ideas — are really cool. It's really aggressive and everything ALICE was, but it's moved on into a different thing too. It's [indicative of the] transformation of this band. The dynamic is different, and it should be. But Mike, Sean and I, we're still here. We're still a big part of how this band sounds. The elements that remain and the element that William [DuVall, new singer] brings to the band are powerful things. I couldn't put a time on it, but I can tell you that [writing songs] is what we are working toward. We're gathering material and doing other business to help this band move forward."

i personally dont see how its disrespectful to still go under the alice in chains name. if anything i think its quite the opposite. i think layne would be happy to know that his songs are still being played and his band is still writing some great music for their fans.

In some cases, it would be ok for a band to keep going under the same name, but in AIC's case, it's not possible. Why ? Because Lane was one of a king and I never heard anybody sound like him or look like him. the true sound of AIC comes from yes, the guitar of Cantrell but also the voices that made their music so weird but right at the same time. It's the way he sounded and sang that made all those songs unforgettable and when they sang together in a song, I had chills. You can't reproduce that and I think that it should remain like that. They became legends, they are not forgotten but they are impossible to duplicate and many have tried. With Lane's passing, AIC lost a lot : a big part of their heart and it is not possible to replace it at all. Some singers can be replaced even thought they were good, but in this case he was better than good, he was phenomenal and truly unique.
When he died, AIC died !

I cant think of a better band to play the old Alice tunes. And I think Duvall has the chops and spirit to do it (check Youtube for some live clips as proof). He's more of a hit than a miss.
BUT
Without Staley this band this band is only 75% AIC, this name is proven though and will sell more than a new one. It's a good move $-wise but true fans will always be split on this....
I won't be part of a boycot but I won't pounce on a new album either, it has to prove worthy of the name and that is highly questionable.

Didn't Jerry sing on some of the tracks (Would?) why dont they let him take over vox and carry on as a three piece.
I agree that Lane was/is irreplaceable, but imagine how a million Bon Scott fans felt in 1980 when they heard AC/DC had replaced their singer. Who knows maybe AIC has the next "Back In Black" - I doubt it, AIC seemed to be done long before Lane Passed, but I will definitely keep an open mind.

^Jerry is a better back up vocalist than a lead vocalist imo, agreed with RM? as i def. wont boycott this new one but im not goin first month even to get it and it will def. be somethin i check out on the internet before i run in on just blind faith that it is worthy

I ---KNEW--- the AC/DC connection would be made.
And since I wasn't more than a diaper sh**ting, milk drinking, mass of rapidly developing, noisy, flesh in 1980, I can't say much on how that went for fans.
Obviously, Back In Black worked but I'm still more impressed by Bon Scott. I genuinely think Duvall can step in justly....But Staley has some mighty shoes to fill. It can never be replicated.
Agree with Cruor on this:
I love many of Jerry Cantrell's Alice songs where he sings up front or solo ("Got Me Wrong", "Heaven Beside You" etc.) But Layne had the market cornered in terms of vocals and lyrics. Jerry always backed him well though.
