Ulrich Says New Album Will Be "More Dynamic" Than St. Anger

Belgium's Studio Brussel conducted an interview with METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich on Sunday (July 1) prior to the band's appearance at the Rock Werchter festival. In regards to METALLICA's new studio album, Lars said the backing tracks were done in May and that the band will start laying down vocals and overdubs in August in hopes of finishing the CD by October or November. Lars predicted the album will drop in February 2008. He said, "It doesn't sound like 'St. Anger' to me. It's a little early to kind of put in a soundbite exactly. But it doesn't sound anything like 'St. Anger'. It's probably a little more dynamic, and a little more varied, and it has lots of different nutty METALLICA stuff on it. I don't know. . . One thing I can tell you is that [the songs] are quite long." Regarding talk of Eastern influences, as hinted by guitarist Kirk Hammett in an Austrian interview a couple of months ago, Ulrich said, "There's a couple of bits in there that could be called Eastern, but don't read too much into that — it's not an album full of 12 'Kashmir's or anything [referring to the classic LED ZEPPELIN track famous for its Eastern influences — Ed.]. But there is some stuff in that direction, sure." Lars also spoke about some of his favorite European festivals and what to expect from their Rock Werchter show.

Not to be off topic but I downloaded some of the crap off St. Anger from Limewire the other day and I believe it infected my iTunes because I had a ton of problems the day after I got it. It was either that or the massive amounts of porno. Who knows. The porno was a chick sucking man meat, the St. Anger stuff also sucked man meat. Coincidence? I think not!

St. Anger was not a good album, neither was Load or reload, BUT name one band thats been around as long as metallica and hasnt put out a subpar album or two during their career.
Im going to hold off on judgement until I hear the new album!
However, It is kinda ri-gddamm-diculous its taking so long to record, werent they in the studio working on it around this same time last year?! whats the hold up!!!

I mean, they'll never repeat it but it can't just disappear right? I actually think it's astonishing you can get up on stage and play MoP every day, and then write a St Anger!

Persoanlly I think 'Ride the Lightning' was their finest hour. and justice was a close second (however the recording on that one always got on my nerves and had they gotten a better sound that could have been their best album).
Oh well, we have another 7 months or so to wait and see.

There's nothing wrong with the long tunes, listen to "Ryme of the ancient mariner" (Iron Maiden). Metallica have tried to change with the times, pity their music has suffered at times, I'm sure they'll bounce back. Any hard rock band that can cut off their mullets and still do a concert like the Cunning Stunts DVD have my vote. I personally can't wait till they come back down to OZ. I'll be there. Rock On. \m/

Ok Cynic, from a production stand point Ride is not a great sounding cd to ME! I know I'm not alone with this notion. It seems you guys are confusing SONG QUALITY WITH PRODUCTION. Ride gave us Creeping Death and Fade 2 Black anongst other brilliant tunes!! I love the album for the song content. Just like Metallica didn't create Napster, Napster didn't create Metallica. Lars was not taking a stand aginst the technology he was saying don't use our music in ways my band don't approve of. VO - Lightnings production was pretty good dude! It was 23 years ago when that came out and for the times it was very well produced album. ON TOP of the fact that lightning has some of their best song writing! so no im not confusing production quality with anything as Im sure neither are anyone else.
Rhyme of the ancient mariner is alittle tedious, probably 4 or 5 minutes too long, but the guitar solos make up for it in spades! Up the Irons!
Metallica, did not just sue the napster folks, I read that they sued some band in canada for using a certain note? that is ridiculous. I am a metallica fan and will always hold them in high regard, but come on, suing a no name band for using notes that sound "metallica like" is a bit much, even the most diehard fan has to admit that.
But I applaud your enthusiasm. I too am anxious to hear the new material.

Branded, I have never looked up the word metallica in the dictionary, so i have no data to support whether or not it's there. However, my common sense tells me the name metallica is under copyright to the original members of the band. At least one of them! Just like I undestand that Guns n Roses is soley owned By Axl Rose. Sure there have been some other law suits that involved other issues, but the only significant one was the Napster suit. This was the one Lars and the band took the most crap over!! IN THIS INTERNET AGE SOME PEOPLE HAVE ADOPTED A VERY DISTORTED VIEWS ON COPYRIGHT LAWS. Whether you care or not why would any band sit quietly someone outside of your organization decided to pimp you on there own. Remember this all began with the I disappear track showing up online.All i'm hearing is some people who claimed to be metallica fans changed there minds as the band became more of a commercial success. Well get over it! There are many more acts who deserve less and metallica aint one of them.
Omatron, you said exactly what I already mentioned, saying that the song writing on Ride is great. I said that I loved the album for it's musical content. All I'm saying is all of the metallica albums sound unique in there own way. For 1984 and this type of music Ride probably did sound as good as it could, but it's no Van Halen 1984....no comparison!! I'M ONLY SPEAKING OF PRODUCTION NOT THE TUNES!!
Just like when we all heard the black album, when sandman kicks in your ears are in total disbelief, because no one ever thought Lars could sound this great on cd! Everyone will see this in there own way. I'm sure there's someone who believe's the black album is the worst sounding metallica album..and on that notE, Cheers to you all!! brandedcfh420 - To me, anyone who let's their personal views of an artist distort their enjoyment of music... I feel sorry for them. If Lars had sued someone in 86 would you have not bought MoP? I listen to bands (Believer, Burzum etc) who's artists ideologies I don't respect but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the music to the fullest.
VO - I'm definately not confusing song quality with production. I think Kirks solos on RtL are... electric, probably the best element on the cd, the levels are perfect (and by that I mean soar above everything else). The vocals are nice and high, fit well with the rhythm guitar. But if you don't like it, fair enough (although my heart goes out to you man, wish you could hear it as I do). Plus their heaps of cool effects, vocal fades, samples, orchestra - As Diamond Oz says, The Force sounds like a demo compared to RtL!

Bravo Cynic. If you're a fan of a band you'll have all their albums in your collection, even if some of their work is crap. I'm also a fan of AC/DC but still have all the albums/CDs. That includes blow up your video and stiff upper lip. They are crap but 'cause they are by AC/DC they are part of my collection. I'm sure the new Metallica album will find it's way on my shelf even if it's totsl crap. Here's hoping it's not. Rock on.
