Its obvious that its still a work in progress. .BUT, i can see shades of greatness in there. . .i could kinda hear it harping back to RTL, in terms of the style but thankfully still different. . .That song right there, when we all hear the album version will probably be a great commercial success based on the fact that it goes for three minutes. . .I liked it, I can see where its going so. . lets just wait to hear a more complete and better quality version before you start trashing it. . .I think its headin in the right direction

i think this song is really good...the riff is really motorhead and it seems like they are really trying to go back to theirold stuff and reach towards their original inflences at the same time...if they take the new album this direction i would be more than satisfied

Fact is, no matter what Metallica brings out next year, the vast majority of people who post their comments on this site will rubbish it, and b**** and moan about it. Its the same with ALL new albums, people get attached to the old sh** because they have their own little stories attached to the songs. . . in short, music fans (and metal fans in particular judging by the majority of posts on this site) LOVE this comfort zone, and HATE CHANGE. Itll always be a case of "yeah its alright. but its no Master of Puppets". Metallica set the bar very high very early. . . but i dont think theyve lost it at all!! For christs sake, people rubbished FADE TO BLACK when it came out!! Now its considered to be one of the best.
I like the new sh**, and im hanging for the new album to come out. Its ok if people disagree with me, were all entitled to our own opinion and tastes. There are always gonna be a helluva lo of people who love the new stuff, and a helluva lot who dont. . .most people who will love it, have never even heard of this little site metalunderground, exemplifying that you guys out there are a small minority. . The fact is, you should be a lot more open minded and less protective of the past. . .move forward!! Metallica have changed, and are playing for a new generation of metal fans! Im glad that they have. Tallica forever

Metallica is the band that got me into metal. they are still one of my all time favorites and my loyalties to the band are such that i will buy every album they release no matter how much it sucks. (im also an obsessive collector lol.) even though their pre-black album material is my favorite, i respect the chances that they have taken and the fact that no matter how big they've gotten, they also made the music that they wanted to. with age, often come changes. i liked load and reload, it was good hard rock. (hated st. anger, sounded like james was strumming a tree trunk and lars was playing drums in the bathroom.) the one thing that i dont like about metallica's shift from metal to hard rock is that their name is METALLICA. with a name like that they shouldve been all metal all the time with an occasional hard rock song thrown in. their old stuff still remains the bar. Metallica RULES!!!

15. writes:
both of the songs could do with some production, otherwise pretty good, both songs sound a bit like Motorhead. And I don't see why people hated St. Anger, I mean f*ck it's was pretty good makes you think of you and your friends just playing in a garage, and everyone knows that wear they started, so not to be rash I personally think they got their roots back.

I ha ve to be honest, i grew up listening to metallica, they were my metal gods, but after st. anger i realized they were no more, since the load/reload sh** they sold out persuing another paths, not the metal ones anymore, it seems like they got tired of it, and that's bad, they should look at what megadeth is doing, they made mistakes too, but tey still trash and do it like they used to, why can't metallica do it too??? Are they so sold out, they can't bring it back on??? Poor lars can't pull off a clear double-bass drum accurately!!!....wake up everybody tallica is no more...and megadeth is coming back big times....!!!!

Argh!!!!! Post better video's if you can. Sounds like a$$ imploding. No wonder people hate the damn song. You can't understand it. Crappy recording. And soooo-what if Metallica is not playing "your" fav song anymore. Get over it. I am. I miss "...And Justice for All." I miss "Ride the lightning." But thats late 80's early 90's. I can't wait for Metallica's new album. I hope its better than the last 3 or 4. Change is inevitable. People change. At least they still try. Even a 4x4 gets stuck in the mud every once in awhile.

I like how everyone praises and criticizes the New Songs off of crap live recordings. James puts a lot more effort into the vocals on studio recordings (just listen to their live stuff and compare it to the studio version), so not only will the lyrics most likely be changed, but the quality of his voice will be better too. Oh, and I don't think that Metallica will use a beat up soup can to record their album, so it will probably sound a whole hell of a lot better just because of decent recording equipment. But hey, let's all get out there right now and take sides right now, I'm sure you guys all know exactly how it will turn out.

24. writes:
I can understand how people want the old Metallica back. So do I! It's more than safe to say that this new stuff isn't really that. Either way, I guess I can live with it. I mean, the sound quality is awful, but at least guitar solos are present. So, it's a start to something different. At least I'm glad they have a thrashy side to them, which is actually present in all of their albums in more ways than one.

25. writes:
Oh Man psythe. You don't know nothing about music.Lars is one of the best drummers and not to mention tha Kirk and James are the top 2 metal Guitarist. And the new songs are Awesome.Much better than St.anger.But why am I talking?By the time the new alboum will be released every complexed little boy will start to criticise it.F**k you.Totally a beginner
26. writes:
Lars?! Are you kidding me? Please be kidding me! Lars USED to be an inspirational drummer. But he's old. He's sloppy. His reflexes are dimming with age, and let's face it; he doesn't have the drive he did decades ago. Kirk's and James' guitar skills weren't even in question in my last comment. I was saying that they have over-simplified (for their genre) their guitar playing. The solos are nothing compared to what they used to be. Maybe the Greek market is extremely under-saturated (read: dehydrated) of the premier music in the industry today. Or maybe you just don't have a clue. Here's a clue: go check out Dream Theatre. Then tell me there's anything amazing about James' and Kirk's present guitar playing...

27. writes:
Well, the same old sh**!! People are and always will criticize what these guys release. Why don't you give them a try and wait 'till the album is released?? They're both good songs, but nothing compared with how they will be on the album. Lars's double bass is back, but he's not one of the best drummers and he's never been. As someone said above, he's inspirational to some of us, and I(as a drummer) must say that he was one of the first drummers that caught my attention, but he's not one of the best. However, he's good for Metallica, as long as as founder member, so let's respect him. And this is something you will have to put up with: this is not the '80s anymore, and they won't release another Master of Puppets, so so let's enjoy what they have to offer to us, because at least they are still trying to make music with some quality (I love their old stuff). Put up with it and give them a try, hardcore fans!! Saludos desde EspaƱa!!!
28. writes:
wow Greek Metallica Fan, metallica is my fav. band but i would never say lars is/was a great drummer hes not even a good drummer anymore maybe if he kept practicin, and the guitar james was never good but the solos arnt the same as they were in 1988, the only thing that was truly solid and awesome since kill em all was the bass

29. writes:
How can you possibly say James Hetfield was never good at guitar? Thats ridiculous . . . Granted, hes a rhythm guitarist and they dont get as many raps as what a lead guitarist does, but James Hetfield is by far and away the best rhythm guitarist in the world. . . Its all in those hell raising tendons which reside in his wrist. . .'fight fire with fire', 'whiplash', and the greatest example of all 'Battery'. A certain magazine described James Hetfields guitar part in Battery as being: "The sonic equivalent to laser surgery". . . very difficult to argue with that unless you dont play guitar. . .I dare someone to come out right now and say that playing Battery is a piece of piss. . .Im sure most of you could play it, but whos going to come out and say that it was easy to learn and easy to play??
Come up with as many names as you like. . .put Yngwie right at the top, and King and all those guys in there, no matter who you compare James Hetfield to, he is not and NEVER HAS BEEN bad at guitar.

I think metallica really is da best band ever and to b truthful, i don fink st anger is amazin but ppl hear it and say o metallica sucks, they gotta listen to master of puppets and S&M and ride the lightning. They r amazing no matter wot any1 on this earth says metallica r the true kings of metal and no1 will eva beat there guitar play it is amaziiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! METALLICA TAKE IT FROM ME STICK WITH UR OLDER STYLE IT IS AMAAAZZZZIINNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!

come on people...going back and forth on skill. those guys are like in their mid forties!
cut 'em some slack! that's difficult f***ing music to play! especially when you're doing 2 hour sets!
sh**, professional athletes are retired by 35 because their bodies just can't keep up!
at least there's a new record to look forward to. look at all the crap forced down our throats every day, and tell me that even a mediocre metallica record is not better than being force fed the new f***ing 50 cent single! it could be worse, man. slayer just put out a new record, metallica is sort of going back to roots, megadeths last efforts have been alright. metal is back! even a lot of new bands like avenged sevenfold and atreyu at least take a big influence from thrash even though they have a pop sound too. stop scrutinizing little details and be glad that these bands are still out there period.

34. writes:
james hetfield sucks at guitar? are you sh**ting me? hes come up with some of the GREATEST metal riffs of all time. DAMAGE INC. hit it right on. metallica songs are hard because they are so f***ing fast and complex and a good majority of them are down-picked the whole way through (i.e. master of puppets). no one down-picks faster than hetfield, no one. granted, kirk gets the spotlight for his solos, but hetfield is more melodic and can rip just as good as kirk. they may not be the best ever, but their near the top.
and i know im going to be critiziced here, but i think an all acoustic metallica album would be kind of cool, if they did it right.
relentless austin-- a7x, atreyu? are you kidding me?

35. writes:
i know, but seriously, if any of you have seen a7x live, they really do put on a good show.
no so much atreyu. my point is that right now is better for metal than ten years ago in my opinion.
the main worthwhile band back then was pantera, and not much else. there are a few young bands coming up that are influenced by all this sh**, and in some ways make it new and interesting. to me, that's what makes a good band. the whole pop thing doesn't mean anything. it's music. so many "real" metal bands are just so f***ing lame and generic. we've already heard the speed, we'ver heard the screaming, we've heard heavy riffs, and we've heard weird a$$ time signatures, now give me something i haven't heard.
i don't know what the hell any of that has to do with the new metallica song, though...sorry

Whats become of Metallica is true of most bands, authors, artists, public speakers, football players, fire breathers, monkey trainers and anti-tank gunners....
You get older and things start slowing down.
Muscles, brain function, creativity, motivation it all takes a hit from aging. I find it odd that so many people have a hard time with this.
The process happens sooner with some artists (Metallica) vs others (Megadeth, Slayer) but you also have to factor in when artists experiment or sellout for commercial benefit. This will also effect a bands output.
There is hope for Metallica, people were saying Slayer were finished a few years ago and I think Christ Illusion is a kick to face of those critics, some lyrics aside, it's a good album.
Rubin needs to set Metallica on the right path. The band need to push themselves harder (as lars/James have noted in interviews) and they need to revisit their early greatness (which they are: playing MOP all the way through live lately).
If Metallica want to surprise their fans and silence their nay-sayers(one in the same these days) then they need to pull out all the stops.

this is to greek metallica fan- first of all, lets set some facts straight. yes james hetfield is a very clean solid rhythm guitarist and is 100 times better than kirk hammett will ever be. kirk hammett plays blues, the simplest form of guitar. he's sloppy, his solo scales aren't in key with what james is playing. and it's like kirk learned guitar got so far and said, ok. this is good enough. the style of blues is so repetative yet so simple. all his solos are plain and sound the same. now you want to talk about the greatest guitarists in the world, try yngwie malmsteen, or even paul gilbert of racer-x.yngwie malmsteen basically started all the shredding and sweeps and the classical playing on the guitar, and not to mention how fast his fingers move. in concert, malmsteen played the eruption solo from van halen eyes shut, one handed with his eyes closed. no offence, but kirk hammett really really really sucks at guitar. and all you people cliam i'm metal this and i'm metal that. you need to do research on who really is good and who's not. think outside the box.lars is a phenomenal drummer, he's been my drum hero from the beginning, and not saying that he can't do like he did in and justice for all 88', i think all of them can do it, except for kirk, that clown needs to get fired or die, which ever comes first, and dave mustaine needs to be sworn back in to alcoholica, and stop being lazy and a bunch of old married men, grow their balls back, and unleash the fury for which they posess deep inside themselves. throw the f***in gibson guitars in the fire pit, whip out the old axes(guitars), and jump in the fire. METALLICA nothing less, nothing more. metal up your ass

I like 'talica but this song sounds awful (bastard Reload child) in places. Whereas in others it sounds like Black album material. Could do with a better quality recording tho.
