Vinne Paul Announces No Chance To Work With Phil
Joseph Rose of Crave Music recently conducted an interview with former PANTERA/DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
Crave Music: Do you ever get a chance to just go back and listen to the PANTERA albums? Do you have a favorite one?
Vinnie Paul: "My favorite one is 'Vulgar Display Of Power'. That's the one that really launched everything. I think it's the best songs we ever wrote, and it was just a record that came at a time when we just finished our first world tour, we were so hungry and so fuckin' into everything that we were doing, and we wanted to make the best album ever. And to me that is the very best PANTERA record ever. I feel like we did a great job on all of em, but that one had all the magic, man."
Crave Music: What was it about PANTERA that made it so special to such a large audience? Certainly more than your average metal band.
Vinnie Paul: "I think it was a bunch of things. We were a band of fans. We loved all the other kinds of music that was out. We didn't feel like we were competing with 'em you know. We just wanted to be fans and friends with them, and I think our musicianship was a little bit of a level up from a lot of bands. We spent seven years in night clubs playing cover tunes, and we could play anything from VAN HALEN to METALLICA to PRIEST, I mean all our favorite bands. We really knew our instruments well and we felt like we could put a lot into our songs that maybe other bands couldn't and that just kinda made it more special. And then just like with any band, it happened to have the right chemistry with the people in it."
Crave Music: Is there anything at all that Phil Anselmo could possibly do, to make amends with you on a personal level? Or is that out of the question?
Vinnie Paul: "Absolutely not. That's it."
Crave Music: Are there any newer bands out right now that interest you?
Vinnie Paul: "I think there's some cool bands out there. There's a band called 69 EYES from Finland who's a cool band. It's a little different than what I always listen to. It's kind of a cross between TYPE O NEGATIVE and BILLY IDOL, and I'm a huge fan of both of them. DISTURBED is probably one of my favorite modern metal bands out there. They do a really good job, and David Draiman is kind of a modern-day Rob Halford… he has it all he can do all sorts of great things with his voice. Those are the main ones. I think SLIPKNOT is fuckin' incredible, I love everything they do. It's almost like a modern-day KISS so to speak."
Crave Music: Who is your favorite drummer of all time?
Vinnie Paul: "The dude that made me wanna play double bass was Tommy Aldridge. The first time I ever heard him play all those triplet bass drum fills on 'Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights)' by PAT TRAVERS, it just freaked me out and I had to go get another bass drum. PAT TRAVERS, BLACK OAK ARKANSAS, OZZY OSBOURNE, WHITESNAKE, TED NUGENT, you go down the list, he's played with all these people and he's still goin'. The dude's like 58 years old and still can play circles around 98% of the people that play drums today."
Crave Music: What do you think of the current crop of new heavy bands in general? The kind of bands that are getting airplay on "Headbanger's Ball", for example?
Vinnie Paul: "I think the biggest problem I have is that I miss the groove. It's all about as fast as you can go and all the double bass. The way I approached double bass is that if you saved it and used at certain parts of the songs, you really get that thunder that you're looking for, that boost that pushes the music over the top. But if you start every song with it and it goes like that all the time it doesn't have that effect. That's what I miss with these bands, they all have the big yelling and the same double bass on everything. What ever happened to the groove and some dynamics? I'm not against 'em because I think they're great players, but I'd just like to see 'em groove more."

Anselmo rules. It's just complicted right now. That's my opinion though. Or maybe, Vinnie really does hate him now. I don't know. I'd just like to see the remaining guys do something. It doesnt matter if it's together or not. I'd like to see Anselmo get back in the ring. His title as the best metal frontman is.....well.......I'm not so sure anymore. I wish none of this had ever happenend. BLEED BLACK LABEL!!!!!!!!

I like Vinnies comment about todays double bass players. Absolutely true.
But man, he needs to forgive Anselmo man. I mean, yes he said some f***ed up sh** in interviews, but they have over 10-15 years of history together man. Even though VInnie is not able to forgive Phil at this point of time, I feel that he will in the future.

vinnie needs to forgive phil, they were in the same f***ing band for 17 years , and just because a couple years ago he said some bad stuff towards him and dime that it is unforgiveable?come on vinnie you need to make up with phil expecially since dime is gone, rex should find a way to solve this problem seeing how he is still friends with both anselmo and vinnie.GO REX

It may actually be a good thing there won't be a musical reunion. The only thing worse than no more Pantera is a Pantera that is half-ass and lacking the intensity that made them so awesome to begin with. Rarely can a band last as many years as Pantera did and not lose a step. Is it worth tempting fate to see if they can regain the magic after a long layoff? Without DimeBag no less? I say let a sleeping dog lie and let the remaining members do their own thing. Enjoy Pantera's music and legacy for what it was, don't risk tainting it by trying to resurrect something that may be better off dead.

Evilcheeba hit the nail on the head. Pantera doesn't want to turn into what Guns & Roses has become. Because if Pantera got back together, it would lack Dimebag and most likely Vinnie as well (as I doubt he'd go for a reunion). And you can't REALLY have Pantera unless you have both those guys.

look guys...i've noticed a few instances where kmadd and my posts were pretty much needlessly deleted
it's a tad ridiculous considering nothing in our posts contend with the moronic babble vomited here daily by the likes of coco and korndogg. we've both been active users/supporters of this site probably going on 5 years now and it just seems a little hypocritial to censor any posted comment (unless it's about staind being better than opeth because of record sales). i'll be the first to admit that our wise a$$ remarks are uselessly harsh in most cases, but if you read them you'll find we give insight to lesser known bands. see it as an underground loser, pretentious obscure band listings, or pointless posts. but if i can help a passing visitor discover an unreal talent like into eternity or beneath the massacre then it helps out the scene a great deal.
we are just as knowledgeable as anyone here when it comes to extreme music but we just have a excessively profane and wise a$$ way of going about expressing our views. i just think this holier than thou way of going about deleting comments has gone a bit overboard.
and lets be honest, i've been reading this article since it was posted in revolver about 3 months ago. i'd also like to see more urgent reports on underground activities e.g. warrell danes solo cd, the meshuggah remaster, more obscure concert reviews...etc. the site is run beautifully and i will continue to be an active pain in the a$$ for as long as it is running.
the free and easy use of the threads is the biggest draw to this site in my opinion. i would hate to see the personality on here go comatose. quit with the deleting unless it's mindless giberish or an obvious example of retardation (red devil)

I actually, didnt delete a thread in this one, and there after havent deleted a thread in the last 6 days that didnt say penal enlargement and a gay website link or something of the likes. So I dont know, but Ill get with deathbringer.
Put onto another subject, if you want people to check out these bands, yet you are continuosly an a$$hole, I highly doubt your opinoins and name dropping of bands will be taken seriously. Not calling you one, but saying the general of what you are talking about.

I love how Vinnie and Dime were the most mellow out ov the band. They accepted everyone, and they have great attitudes toward EVERYONE.
Its too bad not everone (*cough* Members ov Slayer *cough*), can't be as humble and mellow. Mind you, I like Slayer's style and their skill, but can't always be so c***y and bash everyone else...

I don't think that they'll get back together and don't really want them to, wouldn't be the same without Dime. But did anyone notice that he likes Disturbed? I think that's cool that he's open to more kinds of music, and doesn't care if he gets ridiculed by liking a band. I guarentee a lot of the guys in death/thrash etc. probably wouldn't admit that they like Disturbed...if they did. I'm not saying that they do but if they did...ok. lol And I personally don't like 69 Eyes. I could have saw them live but I heard a sample on iTunes and didn't want to listen anymore. And Ty-core that was an interesting comment, made me laugh. Thanks! lol

brad, you make an excellent point, though, as Vayne Theories suggested, you probably COULD try being a little easier on all us noobs, hahah. Most of the time I agree with what you're saying, if not how you say it. That last post is an exception; I agree boths ways on that one. Good job on educating us all on bands we havn't heard of, too.
As for Pantera, I think cheebs pretty much nailed it. Nobody wants to see their idols go onstage half-heartedly and end up throwing fists at each other, or ending the show by storming offstage or something along those general lines. Rest In Peace, Dime - oh, and you too, Pantera.

19. writes:
dime is gone and so is pantera. it's not up to rex or anyone else for that matter to mediate some kind of half a$$ pantera reunion. phil still has and always will have a huge fan base. maybe he can throw a pantera "cover" out there once in a while if he has some worthy enough musicians. by the way, just went to ozzfest in mansfield, ma the other day and hatebreed singer joined avenged sevenfold onstage for a bad-ass tribute to dimebag performing "walk".

I think that keepin Phil away from Vinnie is the best thing for Phil. Phil has opened his mouth too many times and nothing but trash falls out of it. In my opinion, the paramedics should have let Phil die in Dallas when he od'd at the Starplex. If they had let him die, we would still have Darrell....

Jason K, my thoughts exactly. All you people lacking knowledge let me learn you something about phil. He left, no actually i'm gonna say broke up Pantera due to back pain, the strange thing is he toured, promoting Down ll straight after. And as for Rex he too went with Phil on tour promoting Down ll. I think Vinnie has every right to hate them, and I hope they both burn in hell.

22. writes:
Phil is an idiot...... Jason K and CFH have made some very interesting comments.. Its strange how some of the greatest people can be taken too early...Dime, Rhodes,Hendrix, the list goes on, and yet some dumba$$ like Phil A$$holo will probably live forever.....da@%it
I personally think Vinnie is doing the smart thing....without Dime there really wouldnt be a legitiment Pantera...who is gonna fill those shoes....? maybe ZW but I am betting he has the same views as Vinnie.....
R.I.P-------to all those rockers taken too early in life...
oh yeah...suicide doesnt count...thats the idiotic way to go out....

V Paul should get a T-Shirt that says 'I won't work with him'
Every interview, they ask him this question. Anselmo is a d***, Vinnie hates him-end of story.
