Metallica Avoids Conflict While Making New Album

Photo of Metallica

Band Photo: Metallica (?)

Billboard.com reports: Hetfield admits the process of making an album while sober is "very different because there is a lot more awareness of what we are doing and sometimes over-thinking it. Now we are very present for it all and I'm not afraid to do or try anything musically."

But he says the current project, which is being produced by Rick Rubin, is "going great because everyone is present and everyone is enjoying the process. The process is a lot easier. [Drummer] Lars [Ulrich] and I would butt heads daily. It would be going to war every day. You'd suit up in your armor before you go in the studio. Battling back and forth. Now it's helping each other do the best of their ability. It's all moving toward the same goal instead of pulling back."

one thing i did like about kill 'em all better then the rest i think that kirk shredded better then the other 3 but other then that the production was worse, needed better lyrics (dont believe me check the lyrics to whiplash a song about headbangin), and the writin wasnt as mature as the others

Metallica have too much money, that's the problem - if you got rid of that, then they'd HAVE to make music for the diehard fans - music like they used to make, back in the days of MOP and RTL - in order to make any money...either that or make more of this St. Anger popularised, mainstream boredom. Hey, at least we'd know whether or not they'r gone for good.

Well in some way I think it's great that metallica are still out there. But to say that there new record will be great.....I can't say that. As I think metallica went down hill after And Justice For All. Don't get me wrong I know that the black album was selling, but I thought that they didn't write that cd great. When listening to the opening track I couldn't help think,"What the f**k is this sh*t!" After that I've never bought another album from them. But since the firing of their old producer, and joining with Rick. I have to say I might buy their new record as they will be going in a different direction. lol Wow I couldn't believe that I just said THAT!!

After St. Anger and ReLoad I am not sure if I want to hear this new album. I liked the Black Album, and Load had some good songs, although they weren't very much like the old Metallica, I still liked them. Hopefully the criticism got to them and they'll try and bring back some of the old, although I'd say I have a better chance of putting that kind of album together myself than they do... in other words, not in a million years.

Rick Rubin is going to have a HUGE impact on the way metallica is going to sound. Metallica has always based their musical direction on Bob Rocks visions but now they are handing over that honor to Rick Rubin which is 40 million lightyears away from Bob Rocks syle. I would guarantee everybody a nice and pleasant surprise with this album. It is definately going to be different.

remember a while back Kirk said they missed solos (http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=16823), pretty much stating there is a huge possibility of solos, just those solos could create a different feel and inspire them to write songs about the dark sides of life like they used to. St. Anger was an experiment, just a trial of something that they decided they wanted to try. Just because one of their cd's sounds a certain way doesn't mean they have changed for the worse, but trying to show a different side of them, some people may refer to it as a side project with the Metallica name on it. This band risked their reputation to try something and i think everyone should respect their desicion. Remember the new CD hasn't come out yet and no one can judge if this is going to be a good cd or not. Also, RIck is producing, the way he made Slayer sound put Slayer to the top of the list and Raining Blood is still a crowd favorite at their concerts. I believe Rick can have a positive influence. For some reason he even made the Beastie Boys sound good to me.... and that is just crazy ( I HATE RAP)

Talking about Metallica normally causes me seizures I get so mad, I'm just gonna go pray to Satan this one is what we've been dreaming about.

So they are doing what any of us would do in that line of work. Even still if you're recording an album do that! This format will only delay the finished product. I agree focus on the album would at least tell us they care about the album as well as making more money. Unlike some of you, my feelings about this incredible band has fallen at times but there legacy is much to great to be killed with one sloppy recording like anger was. Again, we have received everything this band wanted us to have....Cheers to all with the brains to do what we've always did....WAIT! Rick Rubin has credibilty! More than anything STOP HOLDING THIS BAND UP TO PAST RECORDINGS!! IT'S STUPID! WHATEVER THEY ARE RECORDING MOST OF US WILL BUY IT ANYWAY. They've just about run out of luck. Being a Metallica fan is like being a Cleveland Browns fan. You don't mind being sh** on anymore. You're used to it. These guys are capable of better than St. Anger. They were just trying to mock Slipknot and Mudvayne by being all pissy and angry. One of the things that made Metallica cool is that they didn't express their anger THAT carelessly. I'm tired of being let down by Metallica. They should throw all this rehab and therapy right in the garbage and get back to the boozin' and the brawlin' because, let's face it, Metallica is grasping for straws now. And there's no denying that...

NO OFCOURSE NOT.THE SAME GOES FOR METALLICA SO WHAT IF THEIR CURRENT ALBUMS DON'T MATCH PAST GLORIES, ANY METALLICA ALBUM IS BETTER THAN NOTHING.WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL THEY STILL WANT TO MAKE MUSIC AND TOUR.THEY ARE ALL MULTI-MILLIONAIRES AT THIS POINT IN THEIR LIVES MAKING MUSIC IS NOT ABOUT MONEY SO CUT THEM SOME SLACK.

You know, there are alot of other sh*ty bands out that just don't deserve to keep putting out albums. Metallica deserve it because they've earned it. It's Metallica !!! I GOT HIS POINT ALRIGHT. CAN U PLEAE TELL ME HOW MANY FANS WERE THE TRUE FANBASE? HMM????? TRUE FANS EVOLVE WITH THE BAND, THE FACT THAT METALLICA FANS FIND THE BLACK ALBUM A SELL OUT IS DISTURBING TO ME. I AM TALKING ABOUT DOUBLE STANDARDS BECAUSE KISS MADE A DISCO ALBUM, HELLO???? DISCO?????? AND U STAND BY THEM? THEY STILL "ROCK"? I DON'T FU*CKING THINK SO. YOUR UNACCEPTANCE OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF ROCK IS UNREALISTIC. I AM SURE YOU ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON YOU WERE WHEN YOU FIRST LISTENED TO THESE ALBUMS AND IF U ARE THEN I AM VERY SORRY FOR U.

IT IS TOO BAD THAT YOU MAY NEVER EVOLVE IN TO SOMETHING MORE THAN A PITIFUL "MONGLOID". I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF CHANGE? I HAVE ALREADY ADRESSED THIS ISSUE ON A PREVIOUS POST. yes, I believe that Metallica sold out. But that doesn't mean I dislike their post-sell out albums. In fact, I'm even partial to St. Anger, every once in a blue moon. I can enjoy it, but it's not good music. lol, which makes a certain statement about my taste in music, doesnt it? perhaps I need to be a bit more closed :P

And I never argued that Kiss DIDN'T sell out, either. I just said I still enjoy their music. You need to learn not to judge so quickly, mate. And the true metallica fans are those that enjoy/ed their pre-loss of integrity music.

Nobody's afraid of change; we just wish things wouldn't change for the worst all the time.

besides, a Kiss show was all about entertainment - and is a bunch of guys painted funny, walking oddly and wearing silly costumes not amusing? and thus entertaining?

gaining a major fanbase within the "mass population" does not mean that a band has sold out.

a band has sold out - have you got your thinking cap on? - when they change their music IN ORDER to be more accessible to the "mass population", more accessible to commercial radio, more accessible to the popular fanbase. It is this loss of musical integrity that constitutes selling out.

An excellent example is Metallica's self-titled album: whilst recording the album, the band had endless arguments with their new producer Bob Rock about the direction, scope and sound the album should have. when a band is making the music that the producer, who wants music that will sell and make lots of cash, wants, they have lost any integrity they may have had. the instrumentation is a lot simpler than on previous albums, guitar solos were radically reduced, and song lengths were cut down from an average 7-8 minutes to an average 6 so that they would get more airtime on commercial radio. THAT is how metallica sold out.

bands can well gain an outstanding fanbase without selling out. the size of the fanbase itself has nothing to do with the act of selling out. it's a widespread misconception. hope you learned something.
