"some music was meant to stay underground..."

Site Update

Wanted: Site Design Feedback

Since I'm planning to redesign metalunderground.com (for May 1 CSS Reboot), I wanted to get our readers' opinions on some things that have been commented on in the past. Primarily, I'd like to know:

  • Do you like the overall site layout?

  • Do you start on the home page or the news page?

  • Do you find the text difficult to read because it's too dark or too small?

  • Do you read metalunderground.com on a mobile/small screen device, and if so what is your experience like?

  • Do you experience any web browser-related problems. If so, what web browser are you using?

The plan with the redesign is to keep the current design mostly the same, but change what goes on behind the scenes so that multiple site themes or designs can be made, which our readers can choose. However, I am open to improving the current design as the "default" option.

Please hold off on suggestions for new site features, as that is beyond the scope of this discussion. Thanks in advance for your input and for visiting.

Yes,News,No.No.&No. Less Mainstreram and more underground. Oh wait you didn't ask my opinion on that...lol I think everything is fine. I do think everyone who posts should be a member though yes again I know keep opinions to myself. Keep up the good work on keeping us informed.

As a long time visitor and member and now as part of the staff I have to say I like it as it is.

I like the idea of maybe having more in depth member/staff member profiles so we can have a more detailed idea of whom everyone is....possibly an avatar or picture of ourselves...a rundown of favorite bands, cd being played the most lately, age, sex, job, location, just some basic profile stuff really.

Nothing as elaborate as a myspace page, but something of an ID beyond our screenname.

I agree with RememberMetal? It'd be pretty cool if we could have something like that. But I really do like how it is now. I've been coming here for a long time and I personally don't like change. I like things to be consistent it makes things much easier. ButI start on the homepage. I think it's a lot easier then the news page personally. I don't have any complaints about this place. I personally used to go to thegauntlet.com but when I found this it's better for sure. You have so much more news and more underground things and just news in general. Hope I helped! I love this site! I check daily. ROCK!!!

Hi Ricky, that's good to know. When I started this site, I had very little concern or knowledge about accessiblity, but after more than 5 years, I've learned a lot about it. You'll be happy to know that the "Scribble" font for headlines will be gone initially, but I will bring it back in a "classic" version of the site design.

As for the other comments about functionality - I'm with you. I've got a lot planned. It's just a matter of cranking it all out. User and member avatars as well and comment display in general can use a little sprucing up.

Do you like the overall site layout?
I never minded the scribble fonts, hardly noticed them while reading. The layout is great, I like being able to see which bands are being talked about so I don't have to meticulously search through news articles to see which bands I have the chance to find out about if I'm interested or not. It's simple and doesn't take as insansely long to load as Blabbermouth, I enjoy it much more.

Do you start on the home page or the news page?
metalunderground.com/news is my homepage, and I rarely go to the front page unless it's to find a concert review or something that I saw but can't find.

Do you find the text difficult to read because it's too dark or too small?
Never was a problem for me, I always read it just fine.

Do you experience any web browser-related problems. If so, what web browser are you using?
I believe awhile ago when I tried to view a full story, it'd only load halfway or so, but this problem seems to have been solved and I haven't experienced it since. I use IE(6.0 maybe?)

I love the layout of the site, the black background makes the text very easy to read. I always start directly on the news page. The text is just fine...maybe 1 font size bigger, anymore than that and it would look too silly. I use sbc's browser and it loads in less than a second on every page, much better than myspace with takes up to a minute sometimes. I very, very loyal to this site i never use blabbermouth or any other competitors. I have been checking this site up to three times daily for three or four years now. The only problem i have is with auto login, which is why you never see my posts, for whatever reason the site never recognizes me. I agree that a classifieds section would be nice being that i am in a band. Lastly, Enslaved To Mercy is the band i am in, we are on here, but no picture or bio. If i send this info could you update it for us? if so how do i do it? i have posted a couple news items about us before. e-mail me with details at pneumonic@sbcglobal.net Thanks so much for keeping the site running so long and so wonderfully, as long as this site exsists i will be here.

I agree with RM and Blackbog this site is getting all the asses to flock to it. It is turning into L.G. more and more everyday no one can say anything positive about anything. Where are the discussions? It is all f*** you my band rules yours sucks. I am one to join in in all the hoopla but it is boring. I like this site alot but there is too many kids with foul language that can't type more than a 2 sentence statment without cussing.

I think for less regular users its quite hard to browse through older articles because of the amount of time you spend clicking "Older". Maybe a recent archive page where you can just veiw the article headings?

As far as the a$$hole blocker goes: I'm not thrilled about censoring comments in the first place, but every so often someone comes a long and spams or makes personal attacks and it has to be stopped. I've got some tools in place and others in the works that make identifying these people and removing their posts easier, bordering on effortless. They'll waste more time spamming than I will deleting, that's for sure. I've had enough of my time wasted dealing with the first handful of these people.

That said, everyone has differences in opinion and ways to express themselves. Perhaps we'll coming into a greater tone of civlity over time, but it's not something you can intitute over night. I'm certainly not planning to let the comments degenerate to what is on some other sites I read though.

Yeah if anyone has been to TDN (the Tool forum fansite) it's 100% hostility ALL the time.

I refuse to go there anymore because so many of the members/admin are condescending d***s. It's always about facts and pwning(owning) eachother noone ever discusses anything (opinions, conjecture, similar bands....even in the forums for that exact purpose) because everyone is too hell-bent on outsmarting eachother.

It's much more relaxed here, even if you get in a shoving match it's ussually pretty overt that it's not a horrific and bloody flame war..and more often than not two or three posts resolve a conflict unless someone is just being childish.

instead of censoring expletives with ***s, why not substitute a random word that has a nice connotation so that people trying to put others down end up complimenting them or something. c'mon, you know you'd laugh. like, change "f***" to "hugs for", then when someone says "f*** you" it'll read "hugs for you". god i'm amazing.

d, i try and cover as many good locals as i can. problem is, is that most don't post enough news. most of it is one off shows noone would go to. when i get something i post it. i got at least 200 bands on my myspace if not more, all post their news to blogs and bulletins. i check it. remember that 200 is a very small number since we have over 4000 bands in our "database". i know rocket covers a good amount of local underground stuff also. of course no band is local/underground for long anymore if they are good. a bunch of bands i know have distro deals or get signed. then you start hearing about them on blabbermouth and when i repost it here its no big news anymore lol.
searching for good bands takes a lot of time. i try to discover new stuff through friends and myspace adds and such. hard to find the good stuff out there. good meaning they can play their instruments and don't sound like every other band out there.
