Metallica To Spend Six Months Writing Before Recording

RollingStone.com is reporting that METALLICA have hunkered down in a San Francisco studio, breaking ground on their ninth studio disc, with producer Rick Rubin (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, AUDIOSLAVE, SLAYER). After opening two shows for the ROLLING STONES last November, 'TALLICA got the itch to stitch together a new album. "We've been writing, jamming, hanging for about two months," drummer Lars Ulrich tells RollingStone.com. "Right now it's me, James [Hetfield] and Rob [Trujillo] — Kirk [Hammett] shows up once in a while." On their last album, "St. Anger", the band wrote and recorded simultaneously; this time, they'll first spend about six months composing brain-rattling riffs and mining recordings of pre-show jams from the "St. Anger" tour for material. The boys are currently booking some one-off summer dates to break the monotony. "Japan, South Africa, Bumfuck — we'll play anywhere," says Lars. "I'll draw the line at bar mitzvahs, but backyard keggers for sure."

As previously reported, sources close to METALLICA recently told Launch that the band will not play any U.S. shows this summer, despite speculation that the group would either headline Ozzfest or mount their own stadium tour. While METALLICA are playing three concerts in South Africa later this month and have a string of European festival appearances lined up for June, their schedule has been empty for the rest of the summer, leading to rumors of some sort of U.S. jaunt. However, the sources say that the band will enter the studio in July with producer Rick Rubin to begin recording its ninth studio album.

METALLICA will make its South African debut on March 18, March 21 and March 25 as part of a massive music festival called the Coca-Cola Colab Mix.

What a hack band. Why does it take someone with talent 6 f u c king months to write 12 or 13 songs? It'll take them another year to record after that. And the last time they came out with St. Anger. Yet other bands write and record in a fraction of the time and put out albums with 10 times the aggression.

Well.......we have to wait and see now. But the new album won't be better than "Master of Puppets". I agree with "SlayerRulz", why the hell do they have to take so long to write 12 songs? To me the whole idea of another album after "St. Anger" is a joke. Because to me "Anger" was a waste of time, I don't know why they think their doing a good job. Oh well I guess when you make a s h i t load of money you would be happy with your record as well.

post 7 - why do that??

me, i'm hoping Rubin can manage to pull off a massive u-turn in metallica's downward spiral and help them produce something up to par with MOP/RTL/AJFA etc... hoping like hell. and frankly, i dont care how long it takes them to bring out 12 songs as long as they'r good fvcking songs. and if they arent - then hell, why should i care how long it takes for them to come out??

hey, just be glad they're taking the time to write and album instead of cutting and pasting together
songs with pro tools like last time. at least there's a chance it will be decent. you don't f***ing tell an artist how to create their art! let them take however much damn time they need.
fraction of the time, huh, with ten times the aggression slayerrulz?
yes, slayer does rule, but we haven't heard a new slayer album since 2001. i've been hearing about them in the studio for well over a year, and come to find out, they've just now gotten started. you know what...i don't give a sh**, because slayer can take all the time they need, and so can metallica.

here is the logic on time it takes to put out an album:

when bands are new, their income is based on their album sales and tour. so they work as fast as possible to get new material out for sale, and then the tour to promote it. therefore you have a new band putting out a new record in less then 24 months for the first decade of their career.

THEN you have a band with Metallica's money who doesn;t even need to do this anymore. they can take 7 years to put out a Christmas album because they know idiots will buy it hoping it will be "better than master of puppets".

LET GO PEOPLE, they are DONE.

I REPEAT THE STATEMENT I MADE ON BLABBERMOUTH

" metallica if you reading this then you not many metal fans like the black nor load reload or st anger albums. bout time you go back to your thrash roots. when you said you went back to your roots on st anger you didnt that wasnt thrash metal that was nu metal. STOP LISTENING TO slipknot korn linkin park soad and all thoes sh**ty band. listen to your old influences from the early 80s and listen to something more extreme listen to slayer. i mean your producing with rick rubin who produced slayer. dont try to sound like korn slipknot soad or linkin park. face it you havent made a metal record since justice. during writing period only listen to your old influences that you were influenced by in the 80's,your 1st 4 records, slayer, and kreator. go back to standard tuning on the guitars with an ocasional drop d tuning and a regular snare drum song. do a lot of double bass druming, sing like a metal singer. with a lot of solos. write some brutal THRASH METAL or even DEATH METAL riffs. play really fast. make it brutal, mean, p***ed off, and bezerk. do not make it so it could get played on the radio and sell millions make it so you can win back your thrash metal fans like me and get back to your roots. with rick rubin you have a chance to win alot of us thrash metal fans back. cause this your last chance. dont f*** up and make a black album 2 or a triple load or a st anger 2. dont just please dont.
only play thrash metal with NO nu metal ,country, blues, jazz, metalcore, southern rock, rock, soft rock, hard rock, grunge etc. influence. listen to more underground music. dont listen to whats a trend right now. just dont. make a brutal thrash record and only thrash metal with wild a$$ solos. cause nu metal ISNT metal at all."

It's impossible to expect Metallica to go back to their original material. The whole music scene has changed big time. I don't think an AJFA would go over too well commerically, which recently, seems like all this band is interested in. Their fan base is so diluted now that most people would hardly recognize it, like alot of ppl who bought Load and Reload didn't get St.Anger. It's evolution, and alot of times, as is the case here, it can be really dissapointing. Making your fans wait for such a brutally poor album (SA), like 4 years plus, is shameful. If your gonna make em wait, blow em away with what you've crafted. I think this upcoming album represents one of their last fading chances to prove that they are the creative genious which everyone has come to believe that they are. It was a different era, but Rubin did a great producing job on RIB, maybe he can work some black magic on these guys, hopefully not of the black album type.

actually, it was the media that kept saying st. anger was a return to roots. i never read anything from anybody in the band saying it was a return to roots. i read lars saying it was the most aggressive record since justice, and talking about how it's possible to make f***ed up music with positive energy blah blah blah, which i will agree with. it was all hype.

Metallica has turned out to be one of the worst metal bands in history next to Megadeth. How can you put out songs like Battery, Fight Fire With Fire, One, Dyers Eve, Creeping Death and Metal Militia, then come out with puke like Ronnie, Bleeding Me, Cure, Prince Charming, The House Jack Built and Mama Said.... that reminds me of the classical LL Cool J song that was heavier than anything Metallica put out on Load entitled Mama Said Knock you out!!!!!!! Please oh please stop releasing crap (St. Anger) the only reason I go to a Metallica show is to hear the old school sh** that put Metallica and heavy metal music on the map!!!!!! SLAYER f***ING RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's good that they take their time (I have my hopes up) but I hope it's not because they found themselves staring at eachother going: "Uh what now?"

I can just see it now....

James: Uhm Lars, I dont have anything to say.

Lars: Fine...Then it's decided, we'll take 6 monthes and see if anything falls into our lap.

Rob Trujillo drops his plugged in bass on the floor with a horrible "CLUUUNG!"and skulks outside slamming the door...

Rick Rubin sniffs one of his bare feet and Jason Newstead drives by laughing...Kirk rubs his balding head trying to remember what a guitar solo is...Somewhere Cliff Burton spins in his grave...

The end.

This madness has got to stop! MASTER OF PUPPETS WAS RELEASED IN MARCH OF 1986! I SAID 1986! METALLICA WILL NEVER RECORD ANOTHER MASTER OF PUPPETS OR KILL EM ALL. I THINK THEY MAY COME CLOSER TO A MORE JUSTICE LIKE CD BEFORE ANOTHER MASTER. LIKE MANY OF YOU I WAS NOT PLEASED WITH ST. ANGER FOR MANY OF THE SAME REASONS EVEYONE ELSE AGREED ON. First and foremost, it sound's awful! They've got old demos recorded in garages that souded better. Lars has been playing his DIET drumkit for about 10 or 11 years now, yet one of the bset elements of his playing was his ability to do great drum fills. Were gettin cheated with the two tom toms only in the front. Thats my babble on that, but we can cry, bych, and whine all we want. The past is the past. This is what video tape is for. Watch your cliff em all and be happy! STUDIO WISE I DON'T THINK ANYONE SHOULD BE HOLDING THERE BREATH. LIKE THE STONES THE BREAD AND BUTTER OF METALLICA WILL REMAIN IN CONCERT. THINK ABOUT IT....YOU THINK YOU HATED ST. ANGER, YOU WOULD HAVE SMASHED IT, IF THE DVD DIDN'T COME ALONG WITH IT! GIVE EM A CHANCE SURELY WE'LL GET A FEW GOOD ONES WITH RICK ON THE DIALS! BE MORE CONCERNED WITH KIRK. IF HE SCREWS US AGAIN WITH NO SOLOS, I'M EVEN GONNA GIVE UP ON THEM TO.
